This study proposes a system reliability analysis of rack storage facilities subjected to forklift colliding events. The proposed system reliability analysis consists of two steps: the first step is to identify dominant failure modes that most contribute to the failure of the whole rack facilities, and the second step is to evaluate the system failure probability. In the first step, dominant failure modes are identified by using a simulation-based selective searching technique where the contribution of a failure mode to the system failure is roughly estimated based on the distance from the origin in the space of the random variables. In the second step, the multi-scale system reliability method is used to compute the system reliability where the first-order reliability method (FORM) is initially used to evaluate the component failure probability (failure probability of one member), and then the probabilities of the identified failure modes and their statistical dependence are evaluated, which is called as the lower-scale reliability analysis. Since the system failure probability is comprised of the probabilities of the failure modes, a higher-scale reliability analysis is performed again based on the results of the lower-scale analyses, and the system failure probability is finally evaluated. The illustrative example demonstrates the results of the system reliability analysis of the rack storage facilities subjected to forklift impact loadings. The numerical efficiency and accuracy of the approach are compared with the Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that the proposed two-step approach is able to provide accurate reliability assessment as well as significant saving of computational time. The results of the identified failure modes additionally let us know the most-critical members and their failure sequence under the complicated configuration of the member connections.
Experimental and discrete element methods were used to investigate the effects of echelon non-persistent joint on the failure behaviour of joint's bridge area under uniaxial compressive test. Concrete samples with dimension of 150 mm×100 mm×50 mm were prepared. Uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete were 14 MPa and 1MPa, respectivly. Within the specimen, three echelon non-persistent notches were provided. These joints were distributed on the three diagonal plane. the angle of diagonal plane related to horizontal axis were 15°, 30° and 45°. The angle of joints related to diagonal plane were 30°, 45°, 60°. Totally, 9 different configuration systems were prepared for non-persistent joint. In these configurations, the length of joints were taken as 2 cm. Similar to those for joints configuration systems in the experimental tests, 9 models with different echelon non-persistent joint were prepared in numerical model. The axial load was applied to the model by rate of 0.05 mm/min. the results show that the failure process was mostly governed by both of the non-persistent joint angle and diagonal plane angle. The compressive strengths of the specimens were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. It was shown that the shear behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the joint angle. The strength of samples increase by increasing both of the joint angle and diagonal plane angle. The failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both methods i.e. the experimental testing and the numerical simulation methods.
The Tailor Welded Blanks(TWB) are using various materials (different thickness, strength and different materials) can be welded together prior to the forming process. Therefore, TWB applications have become little by little important in automobile industries, because it has more light weight and process reduction. A burnish area is very important for TWB using laser welding. In this paper, evaluated failure criterion, effect of clearance and distance of between pad and punch by computer simulation. We used element separation method for fracture. And applied a plastic strain to failure criterion. According to the analysis results, we obtain failure criterion, when plastic strain is 2.0. The burnish area and clearance were inverse proportional.
In the field of nuclear reactor safety study, common cause failures (CCFs) became significant contributors to system failure probability and core damage frequency in most Probabilistic risk assessments. However, it is hard to estimate the reliability of such a system, because of the dependency of components caused by CCFs. In order to analyze the system, we propose an analytic method that can find the parameters with lack of raw data. This study adopts the shock model in which the failure probability increases as the shock is cumulated. We use two-step Expectation and Maximization (EM) algorithm to find the unknown parameters. In order to verify the analysis result, we perform the simulation under same environment. This approach might be helpful to build the defensive strategy for the CCFs.
In reliability analysis, the time difference between the expected next failure time and the current failure time or the Mean Time Between Failure(MTBF) is of significant interest. Until recently, in reliability growth studies, the reciprocal of the intensity function at current failure time has been used as being equal to MTBE($t_n$)at the n-th failure time $t_n$. That is MTBF($t_n$)=l/$\lambda (t_n)$. However, such a relationship is only true for Homogeneous Poisson Process(HPP). Tsokos(1995) obtained the upper bound and lower bound for the MTBF($t_n$) and proposed an estimator for the MTBF($t_n$) as the mean of the two bounds. In this paper, we provide the estimator for the MTBF($t_n$) which does not depend on the value of the shape parameter. The result of the Monte Carlo simulation shows that the proposed estimator has better efficiency than Tsokos's estimator.
Electrolytic capacitors are used in variety of equipments as smoothening element of the power converters because it has high capacitance for its size and low price. Electrolytic capacitors, which is most of the time affected by aging effect, plays a very important role for the power electronics system quality and reliability. Therefore it is important to estimate the parameter of an electrolytic capacitor to predict the failure. This objective of this paper is to propose a new method to detect the rise of equivalent series resistor(ESR) in order to realize the online failure prediction of electrolytic capacitor for DC output filter of power converter. The ESR of electrolytic capacitor estimated from RMS result of filtered waveform(BPF) of the ripple capacitor voltage/current. Therefore, the preposed online failure prediction method has the merits of easy ESR computation and circuit simplicity. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed on-line method.
The numerical simulation for detonation failure of ammonium nitrate (AN) based non-ideal explosives is carried out with an accurate and state-of-the-art Eulerian method. Detonation failure is readily observed in the rate stick experiments utilizing the AN mixture explosives and the inert confinements of varying thicknesses. The composition of non-ideal explosives and thickness of the confinements influence the characteristics of detonation failure. Calculated results are compared against the experimental data of both unconfined and confined rate stick problems and provide a reliable guideline to establish a fine-tuned chemical kinetic model for detonation failure.

This paper presents the effect of shape of external corrosion in pipeline on failure prediction by using numerical simulation. The numerical study for the pipeline failure analysis is based on the FEM(Finite Element Method) with an elastic-plastic and large-deformation analysis. The predicted failure stress assessed for the simulated corrosion defects having different corroded shapes along the pipeline axis are compared with those by methods specified in ANSl/ASME B31G code and a modified B31G code.
In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of a strategy of failure detection and identification. The point of proposed strategy includes a pattern extraction approach for failure identification using Auto-Associative Kernel Regression (AAKR). We consider a simulation data concerning 605 signals of a Generic Pressurized Water Reactor(GPWR). In the application, the reconstructions are provided by a set of AAKR models, whose input signals have been selected by Correlation Analysis(CA) for the identification of the groups. The failure pattern is extracted by analyzing the residuals of observations and reconstructions. We present the possibility of extraction of patterns for six failure.
