When a complex load such as torsion, low-speed impact, or fatigue load is applied, the properties in the thickness direction are weakened through microcracks inside the material due to the nature of the laminated composite material, and delamination occurs. To prevent the interlaminar delamination, various three-dimensional reinforcement methods such as Z-pinning and stitching, and structural health monitoring techniques that detect the microcrack of structures in real time have been continuously studied. In this paper, the single-lap joints with I-fiber stitching process were manufactured by a co-curing method and their strengths and failure detection capability were evaluated. AE and electric resistance method were used for detection of crack and failure signal and electric circuit for signal analysis was manufactured, and failure signal was analyzed during the tensile test of a single-lap joint. From the experiment, the strength of the single lap joint reinforced by I-fiber stitching process was improved by about 44.6% compared to the co-cured single lap joint without reinforcement. In addition, as the single-lap joint reinforced by I-fiber stitching process can detect failure in both the electrical resistance method and the AE method, it has been proven to be an effective structure for failure monitoring as well as strength improvement.

The surfaces of machine components in sliding contact such as bearing, gears and pistons etc. frequently operate under the condition of mixed lubrication due to high load, high speed and slip. These machine components often undergo the inception of scuffing in practical application. The scuffing failure is a critical problem in modern machine components, especially for the requirement of high efficiency and small size. However, it is difficult to find a universal mechanism to explain all scuffing phenomena because there are so many factors affecting the onset of scuffing. In this study, scuffing experiments are conducted using Acoustic Emission(AE) measurement by an indirect sensing approach to detect scuffing failure. Acoustic Emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the friction interface. Using AE signals we can get an indication about the state of the friction processes, about the quality of solid and liquid layers eon the contacting surfaces in real time. The FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analyses of the AE signal are used to understand the interfacial interaction and the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact is presented

Scanning Acoustic Microscope (SAM) is used as an important nondestructive test tool in semiconductor reliability evaluation and failure analysis. However, inspections of chip attach adhesive interface fer thin chip has proven difficulty as the reflected signals from the chip top and bottom are superimposed. In this paper, in order to overcome this difficulty, a new signal processing method based on the deconvolution technique combined with the wavelet transform is proposed. The wavelet transform complements a disability of deconvolution technique of which performance largely decreases when the waveform of target signal is not identical to that of reference signal. Performances of the proposed method are demonstrated by through computer simulations using model signal and experiments for the fabricated semiconductor samples, and satisfactory results are obtained.

Numerous connectors are used in automobiles for transmission of electrical signals across various electro-mechanical components. The connectors must operate with high reliability in order to minimize failures due to signal degradation. In this work, the effects of contamination at the contact interface of connectors used fur automobile crankshaft position sensor on the impedance change were investigated. An experimental set-up was built to simulate the electrical signal transmitted from the sensor to the engine control unit through a connector. Output from the connector was investigated using connectors contaminated with engine block residues and water droplets. It was found that slight contamination of the connectors could lead to significant signal degradation which can lead to engine failure. Also, the effect of water in the connector altered the signal severely. However, the signal gradually regained the original state as the water evaporated from the interface.

This paper addresses the problem of signal acquisition with a sparse representation in a given orthonormal basis using fewer noisy measurements. The authors formulate the problem statement for randomly measuring with strong signal noise. The impact of white Gaussian signals noise on the recovery performance is analyzed to provide a theoretical basis for the reasonable design of the measurement matrix. With the idea that the measurement matrix can be adapted for noise suppression in the adaptive CS system, an adapted selective compressive sensing (ASCS) scheme is proposed whose measurement matrix can be updated according to the noise information fed back by the processing center. In terms of objective recovery quality, failure rate and mean-square error (MSE), a comparison is made with some nonadaptive methods and existing CS measurement approaches. Extensive numerical experiments show that the proposed scheme has better noise suppression performance and improves the support recovery of sparse signal. The proposed scheme should have a great potential and bright prospect of broadband signals such as biological signal measurement and radar signal detection.
In this work, a neuro-fuzzy inference system combined with the wavelet denoising, PCA (principal component analysis) and SPRT (sequential probability ratio test) methods is developed to detect the relevant sensor failure using other sensor signals. The wavelet denoising technique is applied to remove noise components in input signals into the neuro-fuzzy system The PCA is used to reduce the dimension of an input space without losing a significant amount of information. The PCA makes easy the selection of the input signals into the neuro-fuzzy system. Also, a lower dimensional input space usually reduces the time necessary to train a neuro-fuzzy system. The parameters of the neuro-fuzzy inference system which estimates the relevant sensor signal are optimized by a genetic algorithm and a least-squares algorithm. The residuals between the estimated signals and the measured signals are used to detect whether the sensors are failed or not. The SPRT is used in this failure detection algorithm. The proposed sensor-monitoring algorithm was verified through applications to the pressurizer water level and the hot-leg flowrate sensors in pressurized water reactors.

This paper presents a reliability analysis of S-bonds for AF track circuits, which detect train movement and transmit a speed control signal to the train. Field survey shows that S-bonds are exposed to very large vibrations transferred from rail, and suffer from frequent failures when they were installed on ballasted track. We collected the time-to-failure data of S-bonds from the maintenance field of Seoul metro line 2, and made a parametric approach to estimate the statistical distribution that fits the time-to-failure data. The analysis shows that S-bonds have time-to-failure characteristics described by Weibull distribution. The estimated shape parameter of Weibull distribution is 1.1, which means the distribution has constant failure rate characteristics like exponential distribution. The reliability function, hazard function, percentiles and mean lifetime are derived for maintenance support.

When concrete is subjected to uniaxial compression, the failure process is normally initialed from a localized zone. The localization of failure governs structural behaviors of concrete. In this paper, the compressive strength and failure behavior of recycled coarse aggregate concrete with different replacement level of recycled coarse aggregates are investigated using acoustic emission(AE). AE characteristics of concrete were investigated during the entire loading period. For these purpose, four recycled coarse aggregate replacement level (i.e 0%, 30%, 60% and 100%) were considered in this paper. Result from this study show AE signal, AE method can apply to investigate a compressive failure mode according to recycled coarse replacement level.

The failure of the road cut-slope due to heavy rains brings about lots of injuries and damage on national properties. KICT has developed CSMS system by means of prevention to manage the dangerous cut slopes. In spite of the continuous management the frequency of cut-slopes failure is increasing the past due to changes of earth-environment. KICT has installed the "Real-Time Monitoring System" on dangerous slopes. The operation of Real-Time Monitoring System is used as a positive system to reduce injuries and damages. However, Although the slope manager is aware of the signs collapsed in advance, it has temporal and spatial limits until the slope manager performs the works which are preventing the accidents. When real time monitoring system finds out an indication of slope collapse, the Rock-fall Signal Lamp System makes road-users indicated the risk of cut slopes. It is a kind of prevention system that it will minimize the damages of the properties as suspension of traffic automatically or passively.

This paper presents a reliability assessment model for the power semiconductors used in wind turbine power converters. In this study, the thermal loadings at different timescales of wind speed are considered. First, in order to address the influence of long-term thermal cycling caused by variations in wind speed, the power converter operation state is partitioned into different phases in terms of average wind speed and wind turbulence. Therefore, the contributions can be considered separately. Then, in regards to the reliability assessment caused by short-term thermal cycling, the wind profile is converted to a wind speed distribution, and the contribution of different wind speeds to the final failure rate is accumulated. Finally, the reliability of an actual power converter semiconductor for a 2.5 MW wind turbine is assessed, and the failure rates induced by different timescale thermal behavior patterns are compared. The effects of various parameters such as cut-in, rated, cut-out wind speed on the failure rate of power devices are also analyzed based on the proposed model.
