  • This study was carried out to determine the genic values of taste of Korean hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in practical genetic resources of using to breed them. The two breeding materials of pepper, '#1803' ($P_1$) of prefer tastes and '#1532' ($P_2$) of ordinary taste, and their $F_1$, $F_2$ generations were used in this study. By using partitioning method it was possible to estimate, from the $F_2$ generation, the number of effective factor pairs differentiating the two parents. There were found to be differentiated by two effective factor pairs. In practical genetic resource of using to breed the Korean hot pepper, the heritance of pepper tastes showed that the $F_1$ was better than excellent parent by reason of over dominant, but some $F_2$ was better than both parent by transgressive segregation. As the result, the magnitude of genic effects of A-a gene in pepper tastes was 0.36, and B-b gene was 0.64. The tastes of Korean hot pepper showed a complex inheritance by interaction effect on the two non-allelic factors of 0.94 and secondary effect of 2.86 at the most.

  • Voltage transformer(VT) comparison measurement system is usually used for measurements of ratio error and phase angle error of VT made in industry. Both ratio error and phase angle error in VT are critically influenced by values of burden of VT used. External burden effects on both ratio error and phase angle error in VT are theoretically calculated. From the theoretical calculation, a method of evaluation for linearity of ratio error and phase angle error in VT measurement system have been developed using the standard capacitive burdens, with negligible dissipation factor less than 10$^{-4}$. These burden consists of five standard capacitors, with nominal capacitance of 1.1 $\mu$F, 1 $\mu$F, 0.1 $\mu$F, 0.01 $\mu$F, 0.001 $\mu$F. The developed method has been applied in VT measurement system of industry, showing in good consistency and linearity within 0.001 $\%$ between theoretical and measured values.

  • Developed the model equations which calculate roll force, roll power during hot rolling in real time. The variables which mainly effect on the roll force, roll power are shape factor, reduction, roll diameter, roll velocity, strip inlet temperature, carbon content of strip and strip-roll contact friction coefficient. Among these variables roll diameter, roll velocity, inlet temperature, carbon content and friction coefficient can be excluded in interpolated model equation by introducing equation of die force(F'), power(p') of the frictionless uniform plane strain compression which can be calculated without iteration. At the case of coulomb friction coefficient of 0.3, we evaluated coefficient of polynomial equations of {{{{ { F} over {F' } }}}}, {{{{ { Pf} over {Pd }, { Pd} over {P' } }}}} from the result of finite element analysis using interpolation. It was found that the change of values of {{{{ { F} over {F' }, { P} over {P' } }}}} with the friction coefficient tend to straight line which slope depend only on shape factor. With these properties, developed model equations could be extended to other values of coulomb friction coefficient. To verify developed roll force, roll power model equation we compared the results from these model equation with the results from these model equation with the results from finite element analysis in factory process condition.

  • This study was performed to elucidate the inhibitory effects of Alveopora japonica extract on melanin synthesis by measuring the levels of cell viability, mRNA expression, tyrosinase activity, and melanin production in the B16F10 cell line. The effects of A. japonica extract on tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TYRP1), TYRP2, tyrosinase (TYR), and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) mRNA expression levels and melanin content were determined. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR show that A. japonica extract decrease the mRNA expression levels of TYRP1, TYRP2, TYR, and MITF in B16F10 cell line, resulting in lower levels of melanin production compared to α-MSH-treated B16F10 cells. Tyrosinase activity assays reveal that A. japonica extract decrease melanin production in B16F10 cells. These results demonstrate the whitening effects of A. japonica extract on B16F10 cells; thus, A. japonica extract is a potent ingredient for skin whitening. Further research is needed on the mechanism of action of A. japonica extract. Such research will benefit not only cosmetics, but also the health food and medical industries.

  • In this paper, a new performance equation of bath tubs has been derived, which is very characteristically illuminating and in good agreement with experiments : $$T=T_{\infty}+(T_0-T_{\infty})e-\frac{k(A'_f+A_0)}{Mc_{P{\Delta}x}t$$, where $T_{\infty}$ is the temperature of the bathroom, $T_0$ that of the bathwater at t=0, k the overall heat conductivity of the tub- wall, $A'_f$ the equivalent surface area to the wall, $A_0$ the submerged area of the tub-wall, M mass of the bath-water, $C_p$ the specific heat of the bathwater and ${\Delta}x$ the thickness of the tub-wall. Here the equivalent-free surface area is written as $$A'_f=mA_f,\;m=const.(1-{\phi})^{0.88}$$ : where m is a numerical factor which is determined by a simple experiment and some calculation, {\phi}$ the relative humidity and $A_f$ the real free-surface area. From this study, it has been clarified that cooling of bath-water is mainly due to mass-transfer through evaporation from the free surface and conductive heat loss through the tub-wall is minor, which rather gaily mock at common sense. The effect of keeping bathwater warn by increase of the tub-wall thickness is also analyzed by a new idea of the thickness gain factor.

  • Background: Globally, spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a big burden, including 90% suffering permanent disability, and 60%-69% experiencing neuropathic pain. The main causes are oxidative stress, inflammation, and degeneration. The efficacy of the stem cell secretome is promising, but the role of human neural stem cell (HNSC)-secretome in neuropathic pain is unclear. This study evaluated how the mechanism of HNSC-secretome improves neuropathic pain and locomotor function in SCI rat models through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-matrix degradation, and neurotrophic activities. Methods: A proper experimental study investigated 15 Rattus norvegicus divided into normal, control, and treatment groups (30 µL HNSC-secretome, intrathecal in the level of T10, three days post-traumatic SCI). Twenty-eight days post-injury, specimens were collected, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, F2-Isoprostanes, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were analyzed. Locomotor recovery was evaluated via Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan scores. Neuropathic pain was evaluated using the Rat Grimace Scale. Results: The HNSC-secretome could improve locomotor recovery and neuropathic pain, decrease F2-Isoprostane (antioxidant), decrease MMP-9 and TNF-α (anti-inflammatory), as well as modulate TGF-β and BDNF (neurotrophic factor). Moreover, HNSC-secretomes maintain the extracellular matrix of SCI by reducing the matrix degradation effect of MMP-9 and increasing the collagen formation effect of TGF-β as a resistor of glial scar formation. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated the mechanism of HNSC-secretome in improving neuropathic pain and locomotor function in SCI through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-matrix degradation, and neurotrophic activities.

  • EAF reduction slag has unstable properties of expansion and destruction. Therefore, it cannot be used as a construction material. The purpose of this study was to use EAF reduction slag as a concrete admixture. EAF reduction slag contains $11CaO{\cdot}7Al_2O_3{\cdot}CaF_2$ and ${\beta}-C_2S$ (calcium aluminate compounds). To confirm the properties of EAF reduction slag as a concrete admixture, the condensation, compressive strength and activity factor due to substitution rate of EAF reduction slag were measured. Originally, EAF reduction slag was cured rapidly because of its chemical composition ($11CaO{\cdot}7Al_2O_3{\cdot}CaF_2$). On the other hand, when 8% gypsum was added, its properties of condensation and compressive strength were similar to the plain specimen. When 6% gypsum was added, the quality of the KS F 2536 standards (quality standard number 3) were met in terms of activity factor. Overall, 8% gypsum addition is the most appropriate by considering the activity factor in the long-term compressive strength.

  • This paper presents theoretical and experimental study on the quality-factor of the laterally oscillated electrostatic microactuator, driven by a lateral repulsive-force generated by the asymmetry of planar electric field. The quality-factor of the repulsive-force microactuator using a creeping flow model of the ambient air is evaluated. By filling the simulation results of damping force, we evaluate the dimensionless damping force, $\alpha$, thereby obtaining an analytical damping force, F, in the form of $F=\mu\; \alphaUL,\; where\; \mu,$ U and L denote the air viscosity, the velocity and the characteristic length of the movable electrodes. The measured quality-factor increases from 12 to 13 for the DC bias voltage increased from 60V to 140v. The theoretical quality-factor estimated from the creeping flow model increases from 14.9 to 18.7. Characteristics of quality-factor of the repulsive-force microactuator have been discussed and compared with those of the conventional attractive-force microactuator.
