  • This study was undertaken to investigate factors that affect the assessment of complications in diabetic eye and kidney diseases. Data was obtained from the National Community Health Survey, 2017. The subjects included were 25,829 respondents who had been diagnosed with diabetes. Logistic regression analysis was applied to determine the factors affecting associated diabetic eye disease (fundus examination) and kidney disease (microalbuminuria examination) complications. The diabetic eye disease complication rate was 35.6%, and diabetic kidney disease complication rate was 39.8%. Complications arising due to diabetes were determined to be 35.6% for eye diseases and 39.8% for kidney related diseases. Ed. Notes: The original sentence is not very lucid. I have suggested an alternate edit. I leave it to the author's discretion to accept or reject the same. Please delete whichever sentence is not suitable. Walking activity (OR=1.03, OR=1.02), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) recognition (OR=2.33, OR=2.33), blood glucose level recognition (OR=1.61, OR=1.71), diabetes drug therapy (OR=2.67, OR=3.05), and diabetic management education (OR=1.45, OR=1.47) were more likely to be evaluated for eye and kidney disease complications. Our results indicate that to increase the rate of screening for diabetic complications, it is necessary to develop a diabetes management system that includes the type and timing of diabetic complications, as well as different promotional methods that recognize HbA1C and blood glucose levels. Ed. Notes: Do you mean 'screening' methods? Please revise appropriately, if required. In addition, it is essential to develop a guideline for the management of diabetes mellitus, and to incorporate a screening test for diabetic complications in the national screening system.

  • Objectives : This study is on the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment records of King Hyeonjong, classified according to diseases and chronology. Methods : Records on the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of King Hyeonjong have been extracted from the web database of "The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Chosun Dynasty". First, all articles containing the keywords 'Yakbang (藥房)' and 'Euigwan (醫官)' have been extracted. Then, those during King Hyeonjong's reign have been rearranged in chronological order. Among these records, those regarding acupuncture and moxibustion have been used in this paper. Results : King Hyeonjong was mostly treated on eye diseases, musculoskeletal system disorders, deficient source qi, and tumor. Acupuncture treatment was preferred for eye diseases, and moxibustion treatment for musculoskeletal disorders. Medicine was used 50 times, acupuncture 4 times, and moxibustion 14 times to treat source qi deficiency, showing that acupuncture and moxibustion treatments were used for clear deficiency syndrome. Only on the case of tumor, the number of acupuncture treatments was bigger than that of medicine treatments. Conclusions : In the early days of his reign, King Hyeonjong suffered from hypochondria, as compared to source qi deficiency and septicemia during later days. He received frequent acupuncture and moxibustion treatments, and he especially preferred those treatments for eye diseases and musculoskeletal disorders.

  • The Korean native goat has been extensively used in the experimental work. Compared to those experimental work employing the goat, reports on their diseases have been scarcely documented. In the present communication, authors reviewed the literatures pertaining to the diseases of the Korean native goat. Diseases of the respiratory system, the alimentary tract, the liver, the musculoskeletal system, the skin, the urogenital system, the nervous system, the eye, and the heart were reviewed. And then metabolic, toxic, and parasitic diseases were reviewed. Of those diseases reviewed, diseases of the heart and kidney, and metabolic and toxic diseases were wholly artificially-induced. Except the parasitic diseases, a considerable number of diseases of other organ systems were also artificially-induced. And the parasitic diseases reported were confined to the internal parasites. Authors feel that the known occurrence of diseases would help diagnose new disease in the goat.

  • Beagle is one of the most popular laboratory animal in a dog. We investigated the incidence of spontaneous ophthalmic disease in Beagles in order to make basic data for quality control of Beagles in Korea. We surveyed 389 beagles from 3 different farms. The average prevalence rate of ophthalmic diseases was 19.3%. The prevalence rate of cataracts was higher than any other ophthalmic diseases, 7.5% and then in order of corneal scar(2.1%), retinal hemorrhage(1.5%), post-inflammatory retinal change(1.5%), cherry eye(1.0%), distichiasis(0.8%), entropion(0.8%), hypoplastic optic disc(0.8%), conjunctivitis(0.5%), retinal dysplasia(0.5%), asteroid hyalosis(0.3%), congenital eye anomaly(0.3%), corneal lipidosis(0.3%), conjunctival hemorrhage(0.3%), lens capsule pigmentation(0.3%), persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (0.3%), posterior synechia(0.3%), eyelid tumor(0.3%) and uveal cyst(0.3%) were diagnosed. There was a slight difference between male(24.8%) and female(17.4%) in prevalence rate of ophthalmic disease. The incidence of spontaneous ophthalmic disease was increased with age. These data would be useful for using Beagles as laboratory animals and standard reference for quality control of dogs.

  • Particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of microscopic solid inhalable particles including airborne liquid droplets, and it is implicated with several diseases. The eye does not have a protective barrier among the human organs, consequently it get directly exposed to environmental substances such as PM. The scarcity of treatments for damage to the eyesight and the vision and eye structure being closely related to the structure and function of the central nervous system highlights the cruciality of novel therapeutics. In this study was conducted using in vivo zebrafish vertebrate model which is a useful model due to the conserved genes between human. We found that protective effect of Octopus minor extract against particulate matter-induced adverse effects on eye development in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos by regulating antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mRNA expression.

  • Objective : This study is to propose a new hypothesis about the interpretation of Jueyinbing in Shanghanlun by studying 2 Jueyinbing cases. Methods : We analyzed the original form of the chinese characters 'Jue(厥)', 'Jueyin(厥陰)' and 'Huoluan(?亂)' and tried to understand their contexts in Shanghanlun. At the same time, we analyzed 2 clinical cases diagnosed and treated as Jueyinbing according to newly hypothesized definition. Results : Both patients suffered from eye diseases which caused by concentrating on a sophisticated work by straining their hands, feet and chest during the night time. After the herbal intervention, their eye diseases are improved firstly. The National Eye Institute 25-item Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) score increased on both patients. Not only all the patients' chief complaints relieved but their other clinical problems such as limb pain, hand tremble also improved. Conclusions : These results highly insist that, at least in 15 characters provision of Shanghanlun, Jueyinbing had had the different usage from the conventional terminology, and it is assumed that Jueyinbing means the disease made by concentrating on a sophisticated work by straining hands, feet and chest during night time.
