Mg-(9-x)Sn-xAl-1Zn (x=1, 2, 3 and 4 wt.%) alloys were subjected to indirect extrusion, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-extruded Mg-Sn-Al-Zn (TAZ) alloys were investigated. The TAZ 811 alloy exhibited a finer grain structure than the TAZ 541 alloy due to a larger number of Mg2Sn particles, which pinned the grain boundaries and prevented growth of recrystallized grains. The TAZ alloys showed an unusual yield asymmetry behavior. The tension-compression yield asymmetry increased with decreasing average grain size. The TAZ 811 alloy with a small grain size exhibited a larger yield asymmetry than that of the TAZ 541 alloy having a relatively large grain size, which is mainly attributed to the low Al content and large number of second phase particles in the TAZ 811 alloy.
A numerical investigation of the butting process for an AZ31B magnesium alloy tube at elevated temperatures was conducted to develop a double-butted magnesium alloy tube. As a result of the current study, it was found that the amount of doming of the tube end, prior ironing-extrusion to obtain high wall thickness reduction are important factors for the butting process of magnesium alloy tubes. There is also a limitation of the thickness profile of butted tube due to buckling of tube wall during the stripping stage.
A new approach to die shape optimal design in extrusion is presented. The approach consists of a FEM analysis model to predict the value of the objective function a design model to relate the die profile with the design variables and a genetic algorithm based optimaization procedure. The approach was described in detail with emphasis on our modified micro genetic algorithm. Comparison with theoretical solutions was made to examine the validity of the predicted optimal die shapes. The approach was then applied to revealing the optimal die shapes with regard to various objective functions including those for which the design sensitivities can not be deter-mined analytically.
Rubber compounds have high viscoelastic property. One of the viscoelastic behaviors during profile extrusion is the swelling of extrudate. In this study, die swells of rubber compounds at the capillary die have been investigated through experiment and computer simulation. Experiments and simulations have been performed using fluidity tester and commercial CFD code, Polyflow respectively. Die swells of rubber compounds in a capillary die were predicted using non-linear differential viscoelastic model, Phan-Thien-Tanner(PTT) model for various relaxation times and relaxation modes. The results of simulation were compared with the experiments. Pressure and velocity distribution, and circulation flows at the comer of capillary die have been investigated through computer simulation. It is concluded that the PTT model successfully represented the amount of the die swell of rubber compounds for various relaxation times at different modes.
Plastic/rubber blends are ultrasonically treated during continuous extrusion in order to investigate the in-situ compatibilization of the blends without any chemicals. The mechanical properties of each blend were significantly improved by ultrasonic treatment. It is believed that ultrasonic treatment of the blends enhances intermolecular interaction, improves adhesion at the interface and creates copolymers during very short time. The created copolymers are believed to be a major reason for enhancing mechanical properties of the blends by in-situ compatibilization during extrusion. This process can be applied fur preparing plastic/rubber blends to make thermoplastic elastomers or plastic/plastic and rubber/rubber blends, and for making novel copolymers from practically any pairs of existing polymers to achieve desirable chemical and physical properties.
This research investigates microstructures and fatigue properties of the weldments of 6005A aluminum alloy developed for railroad vehicles. The samples were extruded into a truss structure and welded together using the gas metal arc welding process. The extruded sample showed a wide variation in grain size, possibly due to the frictional heating as well as the inghomogeneous metal flow in the extrusion die. The mechanical properties of the samples were affected by the mirocstructures. The fatigue strength of the welded structure was found to decrease significantly from that of the base metal. It was found that the fatigue characteristics of the welded structure were determined by the microstructure of the parent metal as well as weld defects such as porosities and the liquation cracks.
The metal forming behavior and defect formation in Ti-6Al-4V tube during hot backward extrusion were investigated. Dynamic material model(DMM) including Ziegler's instability criterion was employed to predict the forming defects such as shear band, inner and/or surface cracks. This approach was coupled to the internal variables generated from FE analysis. The simulation results fur the backward extrusion were compared with the experimental observation. The chilling effect and friction indicated a great influence on the deformation mode of the tube and the formation of surface cracks. The formation of forming defects in the extruded tube was attributed to non-uniform distribution of strain, strain rate and temperatures in the extruded tubes for the given test conditions.
The outer race of BJ type C.V.Joint has a complicated shape and ball grooves. It is produced by cold or warm precision forging. Especially, the precision level of the ball grooves determines the quality of the part. The objective of the present study is to develop process conditions of the cold forging using the plasticine. Because the cold forging consists of forward extrusion, upsetting, backward extrusion and cold sizing, the study was focused on finding the best perform for each process. The data obtained from the study will be used in the design of the cold forging process for the outer race.
Many in the industrial world that consume high amounts of energy are trying to reduce energy when manufacturing their products. Energy saving during manufacturing is a cost reduction. Reduced cost is necessary for profit improvement. The Piston Under Drive Brake used in the current study is an automotive transmission part. The original machining after hot forging was changed to machining after cold forging of a plate in order to save energy and cost. Two extrusion shapes along the outer diameter caused decreased tool life because of the interrupted cut during turning. Therefore, a thickness reduction of two extrusion areas in the outer diameter was needed. The current study suggests an effective way to reduce the thickness of interrupted cut by using progressive blanking.

One hundred and twenty nine primiparous sows were used to determine the effects of alternative processing procedures and feeding systems on the nutritional value of sorghum grain-based diets for lactating sows. Treatments were a ground sorghum control, steam-flaked sorghum and extruded sorghum fed in meal form and the ground sorghum control given as pellets or gruel (1:1 ratio of water and feed on a volume:volume basis). Average daily feed intake was greater for sows fed pelleted and gruel diet forms than sow fed the diets with steam-flaked and extruded sorghum (p<0.04). However, no differences occurred in sow weight or backfat losses among the treatments (p>0.14). Number of pigs weaned and livability rates were similar among treatments except that steam-flaked sorghum supported greater litter weight gains than extruded sorghum (p<0.02). Apparent digestibilities of DM, N and GE in sows fed steam-flaked and extruded sorghum were greater (p<0.001) than in sows fed pelleted or gruel diets. Of the various treatments, sows fed extruded sorghum tended to have the highest digestibilities of DM, N and GE, and lowest excretions of DM and N in the faeces. Severity of ulceration was not significantly affected by treatments (p>0.35), but keratinization was greatest for sows fed extruded sorghum (p<0.01). In conclusion, the alternative processing methods (steam-flaking and extrusion) and feeding system (pellets and gruel) had little effect on sow and litter performance. However, nutrient digestibilities were improved for all treatments that involved heating (steam flaking, extrusion and pelleting) and, thus, these treatments resulted in less fecal excretion of DM and N.
