  • Crack width is an important indicator to evaluate the health condition of the concrete structure. The crack width is measured by manual using crack width gauge commonly, which is time-consuming and laborious. In this paper, we have proposed a fast and simplified crack width quantification method via deep Q learning and geometric calculation. Firstly, the crack edge is extracted by using U-Net network and edge detection operator. Then, the intelligent decision of is made by the deep Q learning model. Further, the geometric calculation method based on endpoint and curvature extreme point detection is proposed. Finally, a case study is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, achieving high precision in the real crack width quantification.

  • Considering heat transfer and heat loss processes for the heat engine operating between two fixed heat reservoirs, it may be qualitatively explained that the maxima of power output and its efficiency depending upon operating conditions are extreme maxima. Furthermore, it is also found that from an economic point of view the above two extremes are related to extreme minima of plant cost per unit power output and operation cost per unit power output respectively, and the condition of minimum cost per unit power output exists between the extreme minimum conditions of plant cost per unit power output and that of operation cost per unit power output.

  • Let A denote the set {$a{\in}M_n{\mid}a{\geq}0$, $tr(a)=1$}, $St(M_n)$ the set of all states on $M_n$, and $PS(M_n)$ the set of all pure states on $M_n$. We show that there are one-to-one correspondences between A and $St(M_n)$, and between the set of all extreme points of A and $PS(M_n)$. We find a necessary and sufficient condition for a state on $M_{n1}{\oplus}{\cdots}{\oplus}M_{nk}$ to be extended to a pure state on $M_{n1}+{\cdots}+_{nk}$.

  • Hourly ozone data are available for 73 stations in South Korea from January, 1988 to August, 1998. We are interested in detecting trends in both the mean levels and the extremes of ozone, and in determining how these trends vary over the country. The latter aspect means that we also have to understand the spatial dependence of ozone. In this connection, therefore, we examine in this paper the following features: determining trends in mean ozone levels at individual stations and combination across stations; determining trends in extreme ozone levels at individual stations and combination across stations; spatial modeling of trends in mean and extreme ozone levels.

  • A wavefront coding (WFC) technique provides an extension of the depth of field for a microscopy imaging system with slight loss of image spatial resolution. Through the analysis of the relationship between the incidence angle of light at the phase mask and the system pupil function, a mixing symmetrical cubic phase mask (CPM) applied to 5X-40X micro-objectives is optimized simultaneously based on point-spread function (PSF) invariance and nonzero mean values of the modulation transfer function (MTF) near the spatial cut-off frequency. Optimization results of the CPM show that the depth of field of these micro-objectives is extended 3-10 times respectively while keeping their resolution. Further imaging simulations also prove its ability in enhancing the defocus imaging.

  • We present an efficient algorithm for finding the sequence of extreme vortices of a moving regular convex polyhedron of with respect to a fixed plane H.. The algorithm utilizes the spherical Voronoi diagram that results from the outward unit normal vectors nF$_{i}$ 's of faces of P. It is well-known that the Voronoi diagram of n sites in the plane can be computed in 0(nlogn) time, and this bound is optimal. However. exploiting the convexity of P, we are able to construct the spherical Voronoi diagram of nF$_{i}$ ,'s in O(n) time. Using the spherical Voronoi diagram, we show that an extreme vertex problem can be transformed to a spherical point location problem. The extreme vertex problem can be solved in O(logn) time after O(n) time and space preprocessing. Moreover, the sequence of extreme vertices of a moving regular convex polyhedron with respect to H can be found in (equation omitted) time, where m$^{j}$ $_{k}$ (1$\leq$j$\leq$s) is the number of edges of a spherical Voronoi region sreg(equation omitted) such that (equation omitted) gives one or more extreme vertices.

  • In this study, we have investigated monthly changes in temperature extremes in South Korea for the past (1921~2010) and the future (2011~2100). We used seven stations' (Gangneung, Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, Jeonju, Busan, Mokpo) data from KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) for the past. For the future we used the closest grid point values to observations from the RCP8.5 scenario of 1 km resolution. The Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI)'s climate extreme indices were employed to quantify the characteristics of temperature extremes change. Temperature extreme indices in summer have increased while those in winter have decreased in the past. The extreme indices are expected to change more rapidly in the future than in the past. The number of frost days (FD) is projected to decrease in the future, and the occurrence period will be shortened by two months at the end of the $21^{st}$ century (2071~2100) compared to the present (1981~2010). The number of hot days (HD) is projected to increase in the future, and the occurrence period is projected to lengthen by two months at the end of the $21^{st}$ century compared to the present. The annual highest temperature and its fluctuation is expected to increase. Accordingly, the heat damage is also expected to increase. The result of this study can be used as an information on damage prevention measures due to temperature extreme events.

  • For every n ≥ 2, let ℝn‖·‖ be Rn with a norm ‖·‖ such that its unit ball has finitely many extreme points more than 2n. We devote to the description of the sets of extreme and exposed points of the closed unit balls of 𝓛(2n‖·‖) and 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖), where 𝓛(2n‖·‖) is the space of bilinear forms on ℝn‖·‖, and 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) is the subspace of 𝓛(2n‖·‖) consisting of symmetric bilinear forms. Let 𝓕 = 𝓛(2n‖·‖) or 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖). First we classify the extreme and exposed points of the closed unit ball of 𝓕. We also show that every extreme point of the closed unit ball of 𝓕 is exposed. It is shown that ext B𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) = ext B𝓛(2n‖·‖) ∩ 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) and exp B𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖) = exp B𝓛(2n‖·‖) ∩ 𝓛𝒮(2n‖·‖), which expand some results of [18, 23, 28, 29, 35, 38, 40, 41, 43].

  • As the worst-case analysis for interval plants, a conjecture whether the supremum of the integral of square error(ISE) is attained at the extreme point such as vertices, Kharitonov vertices, CB segment, and edges is suggested. We present a sufficient condition for which the worst performance index occurs at one ofvertices of uncertain parameter space. Numerical examples are also given.
