  • The purpose of this study is to compar self-reported fatigue and fatigue-regulating behaviors of rheumatoid arthritic patients and normal persons. This study collected the data from 75 rheumatoid arthritic patents visited the departments of internal medicine or orthopedics of four general hospitals T-city and K-city by means of direct interview and questionnaires. in this study also collected data from 75 normal persons who had not been exposed to any other disease in T-city and K-city by means of direct interviews anti questionnaires which were conducted by two trained nurses. This experiment was conducted from August 1, 1998 to October 15, 1998. This study used both MAP(Multi-Dimentional Assessment of Fatigue) developed by Belza(1995) to measure fatigue and the measurement developed by Kwon, Young-Eun to investigate fatigue regulating behaviors. The collected materials were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, t-test, and the ANCOVA according to the SPSS PC+ program. The findings are as follows : 1. There was the statistically significant difference(t =5.07, p=.000), between rheumatoid arthritic patients(32.76 points) and normal persons(25.81 points) in t-test comparison by group about fatigue. A fatigue degree of rheumatoid arthritic patient group was high in five kinds of lower realms such as common fatigue degree, fatigue severity to be experienced, distress due to fatigue, daily fatigue degree, and fatigue timing at the last week by dimension. 2. There was the significant difference in the number of fatigue-regulating behaviors between rheumatoid of fatigue arthritic patients(9.37 times) and normal persons (8.15 times), but there wasn't any significant difference in the efficiency between rheumatoid arthritic patients(2.85 points) and normal persons (2.78 points) This research suggests two kinds of things as follows : 1. It is necessary to develop an educational program for improving efficiency of fatigue-regulating behaviors as well as some nursing arbitration measures for reducing fatigue of rheumatoid arthritic patients. 2. It is necessary for the future studies to continuously grasp characteristics of fatigue by gender variable by selecting more rheumatoid arthritic male patients.

  • The blast damage behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to unexpected extreme loading was investigated. To enhance the accuracy of numerical simulation for blast loading on RC structures with seven blast points, the calculation of blast loads using the Euler-flux-corrected-transport method, the proposed Euler-Lagrange coupling method for fluid-structure interaction, and the concrete dynamic damage constitutive model including the strain rate-dependent strength and failure models was implemented in the ANSYS-AUTODYN solver. In the analysis results, in the case of 20 kg TNT, only the slab member at three blast points showed moderate and light damage. In the case of 100 kg TNT, the slab and girder members at three blast points showed moderate damage, while the slab member at two blast points showed severe damage.

  • When the ${\gamma}-ray$ of average energy 375KeV emitted by Ir-192 is exposed to each film through lead foil with various thickness, the film sensitivity will be different according to the thickness of lead foil and film type. The results on the study, different density and sensitive ratio appeared depending on exposed time and film type, but was made on the following common points. 1. The effect of film sensitivity by the front lead foil showed rapid increase up to the thickness of more or less 0.03mm, and the thicker lead foil was decreased more in the thickness of about $0.05{\sim}0.09mm$. 2. The effect of film sensitivity by the back lead foil was increased up to around of $0.03{\sim}0.08mm$ thickness, the maximum sensitivity was obtained in the thickness of more than $0.03{\sim}0.08mm$ without any change in the above effect. 3. The sensitivity of front lead foil was higher than that of back lead foil in thin lead foil with about 0.127mm thickness, but the sensitivity of back lead foil was higher than that of front lead foil when thickness became thicker.

  • In this paper, we studied electrical characteristics of internal converter type of LED lamps for road and street lighting. We surveyed electro-technical regulations and KS(Korean industrial standards) about LED luminairs. Waveforms of voltage and current, thermal distributions, insulation resistances between live parts and exposed conductive parts, and flame test of cover of LED lamps were experimented and analyzed. In regulations, insulation resistance between live conductors and exposed conductive parts should be greater than $0.2M{\Omega}$ in case nominal voltage of wiring is 220V. In KS codes, the value of insulation resistance should be greater than $2M{\Omega}$ while applying DC 500V or DC 100V. In the result of this study, waveforms of primary voltage and current were distorted. There was difference in waveforms of secondary voltage and current according to composition of converter. Mostly, insulation resistances were measured high more than regulation and code value but some measured points were measured badly($0.0M{\Omega}$). Cover of LED lamps was ignited easily. We expect that the results of this study would be helpful for revision of regulations and national codes for the electrical safety of LED road and street lighting.

  • The electrical properties of viologen ($VC_8SH$) were studied in terms of the tunneling current characteristics using self-assembling techniques and ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-STM). We fabricated the Au substrate were deposited by thermal evaporation system($420^{\circ}C$). Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were prepared on Au(111), which had been thermally deposited onto freshly cleaved, heated mica. The Au substrate was exposed to a 1 mM/L solution of Octanethiol in ethanol for 24 h to form a monolayer. After through rinsing the sample, it was exposed to a 0.1 mM/L solution of $VC_8SH$ in ethanol for 30 min. We measurement of the morphology on the single viologen molecule. The current-voltage (I-V) properties were measured at arbitary configured points on the surface of the sample by using a STS.

  • DNA damage by physical insult including UV and g-radiation might provoke genetic alterations in cells, which is followed by either acute cell death or tumorigenesis. The responsiveness to g-radiation depends on cellular context of target cells. To understand the mechanisms of checkpoint control, repair and cell death following genotoxic stimu]i, cDNA microarray can provide the gene expression profile. To make a profile of gene expression in irradiated Jurkat T cells, we hybridized the cDNA microarray using cDNA from g-irradiated Jurkat T cells. Jurkat T cells were exposed to 4Gy to 16Gy, and total RNA were extracted at 4 to 24 hrs after irradiation. The hybridization of the microarray to fluorescence-labeled cDNA from treated and untreated cells was analyzed by bioinformatic analysis to address relative changes in expression levels of the genes present in the array. Responses varied widely in different time points, suggesting acute stress response and chronic restoration or cell death. From these results we could select 384 genes related to radiation response in Tcells, and radiation response might be different in various types of cells. Using Radchip, we could separate "the exposed" from control PBMCs. We propose that Radchip might be useful to check the radiation research as well as radiation carcinogenesis.

  • Staphylococcus aureus cultures exposed to rotating magnetic field (RMF) were studied in order to analyse the possible induced changes in staphylococcal enterotoxin genes (se) expression. Liquid cultures of S. aureus strains carrying different se were exposed to the RMF of magnetic frequency 50 Hz and magnetic induction 34 mT for 10 h at $37^{\circ}C$. Three time points of bacterial growth cycle were considered for RNA extractions. Gene expression analyses were evaluated using real-time quantitative PCR method. The present study confirmed, that the RMF can stimulate the growth rate of S. aureus cultures in comparison to the unexposed controls, while the stimulation is not strain dependent. The studies have also shown, that the RMF, depending on the exposure time but regardless the bacterial strain, can influence on the expression of various se. In general, except for sea, as a result of bacterial exposure to the RMF through subsequent growth phases, the expression of se decreased, reaching the values below results recorded for unexposed controls. In the case of sea expression remained at a lower level as compared to the control, regardless the time of exposition.

  • To investigate a short term screening method for carcinogenic quinone compounds, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), an oxidative DNA damage, was determined in the kidney and liver DNA isolated from Sprague-Dawley rats after i.p.injection of 7 mg/kg adriamycin (AM), 7mg/kg tetrahydropyranyladriamycin (THP), and 10mg/kg daunomycin (DM) by HPLC-electrochemical detector system. 8-OHdG was also determined from rat hepatocvtes and calf thymus DNA exposed to AM, DM and THP. When rats were treated with DM and THP, 8-OHdG was significantly increased in the kidney compared to control group, and remained at high level (7.9~9.0, 8-OHdG/dG${\times}10^4$)at the end of experiments (48hr after treatment). 8-OHdG level in cultured hepatocyte exposed to AM, DM and THP was 1.5~2 fold higher than control at all time points. (1,2,3,4hr after treatment). From calf thymus DNA exposed to AM, DM and THP, 8-OHdG was 2.5 fold higher than of control. These results suggest that quantitation of 8-OHdG may provide a useful marker for identifying target organ in oxidative chemical carcinogenesis and for short term screening of free radical generating carcinogens.

  • In this paper, we propose a medium access control(MAC) protocol for reducing the energy efficiency and for improving the transmission efficiency in underwater acoustic sensor networks. In underwater environment, the transmission delay is longer and bandwidth is smaller than terrestrial environment. Considering these points, we propose a new MAC protocol to enhance throughput and to manage efficiently the energy of nodes. The proposed protocol operates as a channel reservation scheme to decrease data collisions, and uses a mechanism to control the hidden node problem and the exposed node problem occurred in ad hoc networks. The proposed protocol consists of the slotted based transmission frame and reduces data collisions between nodes by putting separately the reservation period in the transmission frame. In addition, it is able to solve the hidden node problem and the exposed node problem by reservation information between nodes. We carry out the simulation to evaluate the proposed protocol in terms of the average energy consumption, the ratio of collision, throughput, and the average transmission delay, and compare the proposed protocol to a traditional MAC protocol in the underwater environment. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms the traditional protocol under a various of network parameters.

  • Purpose: Although the working environment is measured at the construction site, only a few noise and vibration that are typically exposed for each process are performed without measuring the working environment by segmenting the exposed harmful factors. Therefore, it is intended to find the harmfulness of silicon oxide dust, which is most exposed at construction sites, and the complementary points of improvement measures currently being implemented at construction sites. Method: The status was analyzed using the actual condition survey report issued by the Korea Occupational Health Corporation and the Korea Occupational Health Association and data from the work environment measurement institution, and compared and analyzed with the rules on work environment measurement of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Result: The harmfulness of silicon oxide dust was identified and improvement measures were derived. Conclusion: It is expected that occupational diseases against silicon dust can be reduced if the harmfulness of silicon oxide dust at construction sites is derived and improvement measures are actively applied at the site.
