Slope failure that is occurred by rainfall generates a lot of property damages and loss of lives. Slope stability management and reinforcement countermeasure can be attained through continuous monitoring about various slope types that adjoin in human's life for reducing slope failure from natural and artificial cut slope hazards. The study area is rock slope that is consisted of gneiss, and large scale joint set is ranging by fault activity. This rock mass is exposed during long period and has lithological weathering property of weathered rock or soft rock. In-situ investigation carried out after divide by natural slope and cut slope. As a result, the natural slope appeared to high possibility of planar failure and wedge failure in few joint points that main joint set is formed. On the other hand, slope failure conformation in cut slope was superior only wedge failure occurrence possibility in eight joint points. In result of numerical analysis using SLIDE 2D, the minimum safety factor was analyzed slope stability for cut slope relatively low than natural slope in this study.
Police crime statistics report that residential housing such as apartment, low rise, detached houses is the second most vulnerable to crime, which is closely followed by the number of street crimes. Also residential houses are often exposed to quality-of-life crime, e.g burglary. It threatens the basic human rights of house residents in terms of safety and comfort within the urban living environment. This study examines related precedent studies regarding the vulnerability of residential housing including studios, multi-family housing from the viewpoint of crime prevention through environment design(CPTED), extracted the elements and items suitable for the safety of residential facilities and the certification evaluation indicators and check items to be the basis for the checklist are derived. Based on these evaluation indicators and inspection items, we conducted on-site surveys of residential facilities in three areas of Seoul, Yongin and Asan, and the final draft of the checklist was revised based on the results of the field survey. There are 43 items on the 7 fields of evaluation in the final version of checklist, 11 items in the management and operation, 20 items in the surveillance, 7 items in the access control, 1 item in the territoriality, 2 items in the activity support, and 2 items in the security and safety facilities. In addition, various points of interest were added to allow the administrator of the residential facility to earn points for special measures taken for safety. This checklist can be appropriately modified and utilized in consideration of the characteristics of each facility. Korean national police agency has CPOs to check the residential facilities in their jurisdiction using checklists and to certify excellent facilities with high level of safety.
Objectives: The purpose of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) mixed with glass ionomer cement (GIC), and to compare it with that of MTA, GIC, IRM and SuperEBA. Materials and Methods: Experimental groups were divided into 3 groups such as 1 : 1, 2 : 1, and 1 : 2 groups depending on the mixing ratios of MTA powder and GIC powder. Instead of distilled water, GIC liquid was mixed with the powder. This study was carried out using MG-63 cells derived from human osteosarcoma. They were incubated for 1 day on the surfaces of disc samples and examined by scanning electron microscopy. To evaluate the cytotoxicity of test materials quantitatively, XTT assay was used. The cells were exposed to the extracts and incubated. Cell viability was recorded by measuring the optical density of each test well in reference to controls. Results: The SEM revealed that elongated, dense, and almost confluent cells were observed in the cultures of MTA mixed with GIC, MTA and GIC. On the contrary, cells on the surface of IRM or SuperEBA were round in shape. In XTT assay, cell viability of MTA mixed with GIC group was similar to that of MTA or GIC at all time points. IRM and SuperEBA showed significantly lower cell viability than other groups at all time points (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In this research MTA mixed with GIC showed similar cellular responses as MTA and GIC. It suggests that MTA mixed with GIC has good biocompatibility like MTA and GIC.

In Korea, many water intake plants are easily affected by effluents of sewage treatment plants because sewage treatment plants are usually located upstream or nearby the plants of the same riverine area. Furthermore, the inflow of harmful contaminants owing to pollutant spills or transportation accidents of vehicles using the roads and bridges intersecting the river causes significant impact on the management of water intake plants. Paldang lake, the main water intake plants in Korea, is especially exposed to various water pollution accidents, because the drainage basin area is significantly large compared to the water surface area of the lake. Therefore it is necessary to predict the possible pollutant spill in advance and consider measurements in case of water pollution. In this study, water quality prediction was performed in Paldang Lake in Korea durig the dry season using two-dimensional numerical models. In order to represent the cases of pollutant accidents, the difference of pollutant transport patterns with varying injection points was analyzed. Numerical simulations for hydrodynamics of water flow and water quality predictions were performed using RMA-2 and RAM4 respectively. As a result of simulation, the difference of pollutant transport with the injection points was analyzed. As a countermeasure against the pollutant accident, the augmentation of the flow rate is proposed. In comparison with the present state, the rapid dilution and flushing effects on the pollutant cloud could be expected with increase of flow rate. Thus, increase of flow rate can be used for operation of water intake plants in case of pollutant spill accidents.
In the past decade, considerable progress has been made in developing the appropriate biotechnology for microalgal mass cultivation aimed at establishing a new agro-industry. This review points out the main biological constraints affecting algal biotechnology outdoors and the requirements for making this biotechnology economically viable. One of them is the availability of a wide variety of algal species and improved strains that favorably respond to varying environmental conditions existing outdoors. It is thus just a matter of time and effort before a new methodology like genetic engineering can and will be applied in this field as well. The study of stress physiology and adaptation of microalgae has also an important application in further development of the biotechnology for mass culturing of microalgae. In outdoor cultures, cells are exposed to severe changes in light and temperature much faster than the time scale re-quired for the cells to acclimate. A better understanding of those parameters and the ability to rapidly monitor those conditions will provide the growers with a better knowledge on how to optimize growth and productivity. Induction of accumulation of high value products is associated with stress conditions. Understanding the physiological response may help in providing a better production system for the desired product and, at a later stage, give an insight of the potential for genetic modification of desired strains. The potential use of microalgae as part of a biological system for bioremediation/detoxification and wastewater treatment is also associated with growing the cells under stress conditions. Important developments in monitoring and feedback control of the culture behavior through application of on-line chlorophyll fluorescence technique are in progress. Understanding the process associated with those unique environmental conditions may help in choosing the right culture conditions as well as selecting strains in order to improve the efficiency of the biological process.

An optical interference method was developed for measuring rapidly growing and evaporating liquid condensate films (e.g., Na$_{2}$SO$_{4}$, $K_{2}$SO$_{4}$) on solid surface exposed to flowing combustion product gases at film thicknesses well below the onset of complications due to run-off. To develop this optical system, this study investigated the optical parameters (e.g., polarization state, incident angle, target roughness, etc.) Trends for the Na$_{2}$SO$_{4}$(l) and $K_{2}$SO$_{4}$(l) deposition rates as a function of target temperature using this optical measuring system agree with the theoretical prediction of the vapor deposition. This study was able to extend the experimental range for vapor plus condensed phase transport and deposition. While previously unable to measure the evaporation rates interferometrically, these rates are estimated from the results of the investigation of polarization states.
Reinforced concrete structures have been increasingly widely used in numerous industrial fields. These structures are often exposed to severely corrosive environments such as seawater, contaminated water, acid rain, and the seashore. Thus, the corrosion problems that occur with the steel bars embedded in concrete are very important from the safety and economic points of view. In this study, the effects of the cover thickness on the corrosion properties of reinforced steel bars embedded in multiple mortar test specimens immersed in seawater for 5 years were investigated using electrochemical methods such as the corrosion potentials, polarization curves, cyclic voltammograms, galvanostat, and potentiostat. The corrosion potentials shifted in the noble direction, and the value of the AC impedance also exhibited a higher value with increasing cover thickness. Furthermore, the polarization resistance increased with increasing cover thickness, which means that the oxide film that is deposited on the surface of a steel bar surrounded by alkali environment exhibits better corrosion resistance because the water, chloride ions and dissolved oxygen have difficulty penerating to the surface of the steel bar with increasing cover thickness. Consequently, it is considered that the corrosion resistance of reinforced steel can be improved by increasing the cover thickness. However, the corrosion resistance values of a steel bar estimated by measuring the corrosion potential, impedance and polarization resistance were not in good agreement with its corrosion resistance obtained by polarization curves.
Background: The international organization for standardization (ISO) 80601-2-61 dictates that the accuracy of a pulse oximeter should be assessed by a controlled desaturation study. We aimed to characterize the relationship between the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) using a turnover model by retrospectively analyzing the data obtained from previous controlled desaturation studies. Materials and Methods: Each volunteer was placed in a semi-Fowler's position and connected to a breathing circuit to administer the hypoxic gas mixture containing medical air, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Volunteers were exposed to various levels of induced hypoxia over 70-100% arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). The study period consisted of two rounds of hypoxia and the volunteers were maintained in room air between each round. FiO2 and SpO2 were recorded continuously during the study period. A population pharmacodynamic analysis was performed with the NONMEM VII level 4 (ICON Development Solutions, Ellicott City, MD, USA). Results: In total, 2899 SpO2 data points obtained from 20 volunteers were used to determine the pharmacodynamic characteristics. The pharmacodynamic parameters were as follows: kout = 0.942 1/min, Imax = 0.802, IC50 = 85.3%, γ = 27.3. Conclusion: The changes in SpO2 due to decreases in FiO2 well explained by the turnover model with inhibitory function as a sigmoidal model.

Road traffic noise causes considerable disturbance and annoyance in exposed inhabitants. Particularly, arterial road noise is a significant environmental problem in many urban areas in which higher traffic volume and higher car speed occur. Arterial road noise became the target of this investigation in Seoul, South Korea. Noise levels were measured at four points that were based on distance from roadside at the same measurement site and under the conditions as reported by the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) in 1999. The average noise levels ($L_{eq,1h}$) of the arterial road was 80.3 dBA at 5 m, 77.4 dBA at 10 m, 73.7 dBA at 20 m, 70.9 dBA at 30 m. A comparison between 1999 and 2008's measurement values has shown that in 2008 noise level is up by about 1.5 dBA, traffic volume has increased by about 15.7%, while car speed has decrease by about 8%. The relationship between 2008' measured values and predicted values using the NIER Equation is low under 10 m from the roadside. The influence range of arterial noise is calculated at 26 m for road noise limits in daytime. In relation to the comparison between traffic volume and noise level, the equivalence in traffic volume (Light car+10xHeavy car) is higher than other variables.
This study attempts to provide the rudimentary data that might help patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis manage an independent life by the analysis of their activities of daily living(ADL). The subjects were forty patients who had been diagnosed Rheumatoid Arthritis and under drug therapy from RA clinics of the two university hospitals in Pusan. Data were collected by performing an individual interview for each of them during June 15th through July 15th 1998. Questionaires were imployed to investigate the general characteristics of patients. the traits of Rheumatoid Arthritis, and actual conditions of their activities of daily living. The questionaires utilized especially for the study of ADL is the version of Lee Eun Ok's tool which modified and complemented Katz scale (Katz, Down, Cogh and Grots 1970) and Bathel index(Bathel. 1973). It's consisted of 31 questions that each question is measured by 0-3points. The high score in the questionaire signifies the high independency in the ADL. The data were analyzed by SPSS/Win in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, close connection with the contents of the personal interview. Total mean of the ADL shows $1.55{\pm}0.68$, indicating the overall activities of daily living is generally dependent. It also indicates that patients, in the condition of dependent activity. tends either to have recourse to drugs or to take negative strategy, getting help from inside or outside family member. Hence, it is necessary that patients are exposed to the introduction and instruction of self-help devies that might help them manage a comparatively independent ADL, easing their paychological burden.
