The XP-SWMM model, widely used for inundation analysis of urban watersheds, underestimated the inundation area (range) because the manhole was regarded as a node and the influence of the local loss occurring in the surcharged manhole can not be considered. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the applicability of the head loss coefficients considering the local loss in the surcharged manholes in inundation analysis using XP-SWMM. The Dorim 1 drainage section of the Dorim-river watershed, where frequent domestic flood damage occurred, was selected as the study watershed. The head loss coefficients of the surcharged manholes estimated from the previous experimental studies were applied to the inundation analysis, and the changes of the inundation area with and without the application of the head loss coefficients with manhole types were compared and analyzed. As a result of inundation simulation with the application of head loss coefficients, the matching rates were increased by 17% in comparison with the without application of them. In addition, the simulated inundation area applied only the head loss coefficients of straight path manholes and applied up to the head loss coefficients of combining manholes ($90^{\circ}$ bend, 3-way, and 4-way) were similar. Therefore, in order to accurately simulate the storm drain system in urban areas, it could be to carry out two-dimensional inundation analysis considering the head loss coefficients at the surcharged manholes. It was expected that the study results will be utilized as basic data for establishing the identification of the inundation risk area.
Few studies have investigated soil management policy and soil erosion measurement, whereas the occurrence of climate change requires the establishment of robust soil management systems and appropriate control of soil erosion. In this study, we developed a smart sensor for real-time quantitative measurements of soil erosion at the watershed scale. The smart sensor consists of an ultrasonic sensor, a rainfall meter, a solar cell, an RTU (remote terminal unit),and a CDMA (code division multiple access) and it was programmed to take a measurement every 30 minutes. The depths measured by the smart sensor were compared with data from terrestrial LiDAR. Experimental results showed a strong correlation in the depth of soil erosion between LiDAR and the ultrasonic sensor for the period from 22 August to 11 October 2013. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient between soil erosion depth (mm) and soil erosion volume (m3) was 0.9063 in the lower region of the watershed and is 0.9868 in the upper region. The proposed ultrasonic sensor technique can provide high-quality data for soil conservation and management systems in the future.

The APEX model has been developed for assessing agricultural management efforts and their effects on soil and water at the field scale as well as more complex multi-subarea landscapes, whole farms, and watersheds. Recently, a key component of APEX application, named APEX-Paddy, has been modified for simulating water quality by considering paddy rice management practices. In this study, the performance of the APEX-Paddy model was evaluated using field data at Iksan experimental paddy sites in Korea. The discharge and pollutant load data during 2013 and 2014 were used to both manually and automatically calibrate the model. The APEX auto-calibration tool (APEX-CUTE 4.1) was used for model calibration and sensitivity analysis. Results indicate that APEX-Paddy reasonably performs in predicting runoff discharge rate and nitrogen yield. However, sediment and phosphorus yield is not correctly predicted due to the limitation of model schemes. With APEX-Paddy, the performance in reproducing the discharge and nitrogen yield is found to be a satisfactory level after manual calibration. The manually calibrated model performed better than the automatically calibrated model in nearly all comparisons. For runoff, manual calibration reduced PBIAS while R2 and NSE values of the automatically calibrated model were the same as the manual calibration. For T-N, NSE and PBIAS were reduced when using manual calibration, whereas R2 value was the same as manual calibration. The limitation of the APEX-Paddy model for predicting sediment, as well as the phosphorous yield, was discussed in this study.

In this paper, we propose an efficient segmentation algerian using morphological grayscale reconstruction for region-based coding. Each segmentation stage consists of simplification, marker extraction and decision. The simplification removes unnecessary components to make an easier segmentation. The marker extraction finds the flat zones which are the seed points from the simplified image. The decision is to locate the contours of regions detected by the marker extraction. For the simplification, we use a new connected operator based on the size and contrast. In the marker extraction stage, the regions reconstructed to original values we excluded from the candidate marker. For the other regions, the regions which are larger than structuring elements or have higher contrast than a threshold value are selected as markers. For the initial segmentation, the conventional hierarchical watershed algorithm and the extracted markers are used. Finally in the region merging stage, we propose an efficient region merging algorithm which preserves a high quality in terms of the number of regions. At the same time, the pairs which have higher contrast than a threshold are excluded from the region merging stage. Experimental results show that the proposed marker extraction method produces a small number of markers, while maintaining high quality and that the proposed region merging algorithm achieves a good performance in terms of the image quality and the number of regions.

Configuration of soil hydraulic property is an essential component to understand the hydrological processes at the hillslope scale. In this study, we investigated temporal variations in pore development and soil hydraulic properties during the period from March to October in 2008. Characteristics for macropore flow and hydraulic conductivity were measured at two hillslopes: one is the hillslope located at the Buprunsa in Sulmachun watershed, and the other is the hillslope located in Gwangneung Research Forest. Vertical fluxes through macropore were measured using a tension infiltrometer at the depth of surface. The saturated hydraulic conductivities in March, June, July and September were relatively high compared to those in May and October. Temporal variations in several soil hydraulic features could be explained by the differences in vegetation activity and soil moisture content determined by antecedent precipitation. Particularly, the features of macropores had a substantial impact on hydraulic conductivity in the forest hillslope. The temporal nonuniformity of the soil hydraulic properties observed in this study manifests the dynamic features of hydrological processes in the hillslope scale and the experimental results will be useful to understand the internal hydrological processes in the mountainous hillslope.
This study aims at the analysis of the geomorphological instantaneous unit hydrograph model (GIS-GIUH) with geographic information system for the rainfall-runoff analysis of watershed which is ungaged or doesn't have sufficient hydrologic data. The rainfall-runoff analysis was performed in Wi stream(Dongkok, Koro, Miseung, Byeungchun, Hyoreung, Museung) which is a representative experimental river basin of IHP. In the process of analysis of the GIUH model, developed GIS-GIUH model and Rosso-GIUH model were applied the study basin and computed hydrographs by these models were compared with observed hydrograph. The GiS-GIUH model shows more closely to the observed hydrograph than Rosso-GIUH model in the peak discharge of the hydrograph. For the development of the GIS-GIUH model, Gamma function factor N was given by N=3.25( $R_{B}$/ $R_{A}$)$^{0.126}$$R_{L}$$^{-0.055}$, which is the relation of the watershed geomorphological factor, K was also obtained as K=1.50( $R_{A}$/( $R_{B}$. $R_{L}$))/$^{0.10}$.(( $L_{{\Omega}}$+ $L_{{\Omega}-1}$)/V)$^{0.37}$. As the results of analysis, it was found that GIS-GIUH model can be applied to an ungaged watersheds.eds.
In the several decades, various storage facilities have been developed and operated to supply water resource, flood control or environmental preservation etc. Then, how those man-maid storage facilities affect on the downstream water and environment and how the hydrologists can evaluate those features for water resources problem-solving are high-concentrated problems in this field. Most large watersheds in Korea contain various types of artificial facilities such dams, reservoirs, in-land ponds, wetlands etc. But the study to develop the technology for achieving the effect of the variances and properties of the long term streamflow caused by the artificial storage facilities have been on the simple watershed models and experimental modeling in the real fields. In this paper, we introduce the procedure and methods to consider the above problems based on continuous and semi-distributed featured SWAT model. At the first, we describe the elements and mechanisms of storage facilities in SWAT model to see how we can apply that in proper and appropriate manner for real field problems. Then, we applied the process to a sample watershed, Taewha River basin which covers the most of Ulsan region. Specially, we concentrate on our effort to the effect of upper reservoirs on down stream long term flows based on various scenario basis. The result was described and analysed in spacial and temporal variations on that basin using the precise manner.
With the aim of remediating soils contaminated by heavy metals and oil, experimental research was conducted to evaluate the optimal design factors for remediation in terms of efficient soil washing methods and processes. The experiments employed absorptiometric analysis and gas chromatography methods to reduce the concentration of heavy metals such as cooper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in contaminated soils. The experimental processes consisted of deciding on the washing solution, washing time, and dilution ratio for contaminated soils. A dissolution analysis of heavy metals was then performed by the addition of surfactant, based on the results of the decision experiments, and the injection processes of microbes and hydrogen peroxide were selected. The experimental results revealed that reduction effects in contaminated soils under the experimental conditions were most efficient with hydrochloric acid 0.1 mole, washing time 1 hour, and dilution ratio 1:3, individually. Additional reduction effects for heavy metals and TPH were found with the addition of a washing solution of 1% of surfactant. The addition of microbes and hydrogen peroxide caused a reduction in TPH concentration.
Non-point pollution is caused by many diffusive sources, unlike a point pollution derived from industrial wastewater treatment plants or sewage treatment plants. Runoff of non-point pollutants is originated from rainfall or thawing in short period of time moving over and through the a ground surface. They cause ill effect on the quality of neighboring aquatic environment. To prevent effectively the wash off from non-point pollutant, it should be immediately reduced at the source or be treated after gathering of runoff water. This study has been carried out for the best width of riparian buffer zone. So we implemented the experiment in terms of its depth, width and kind of vegetations and calculated the reduction of pollutants loading. The experimental zone encompasses the watershed of Namhan River (Kyunggido Yangpyunggun Byungsanri). The region was divided into 5 land cover sectors : grass, reed, pussy willow, mixed(grass+pussy willow) and natural zone to compare effectiveness of vegetation. Water samples from four points have been collected in different depths. And the pollutant removal efficiency by sectors with different plant species was yielded through influent with one of each sample. And we obtained the correlation between the width of riparian buffer zone and the removal efficiency of pollutants. Using correlation result, the width of riparian buffer zones which needs to improve the water quality of river could be derived.
A water shortage is one of the most important factors for development and management of water resources. For reliable water shortage measurement in a stream, Korea Water Resources Corporation(KOWACO) founded five foot Parshall flume at Yong-dam experimental watershed in 2000. The Parshall flume has a specially designed shape to facilitate flow measurements by eliminating sediment deposition problem that could lead to an incorrect measurement. In this study, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model was used to analyze flow behavior of Parshall Flume under free discharge of five headwater level cases. The flow rates computed by CFD model are compared with those by ISO's formula, USBR's formula and stage-discharge rating curves. Flow rates computed by ISO's and USBR's formula are mostly same, but flow rate by CFD model is larger than empirical value by 9% and flow rate by stage-discharge rating curves is less than empirical value by 16%.
