  • The study performed analysis focusing on specialized convention and exhibition facilities among convention and exhibition facilities in Korea. The procedures and results were as follows: First, by theoretical consideration, meaning and contents of convention and exhibition programs done in convention and exhibition facilities were considered and after that, general characteristics of the programs which were the main of space utilization was derived. Second, considering scale and location, 6 facilities were re-selected for in-depth research from 12 facilities investigated preliminarily. Selected facilities were categorized by scale and through the analysis of programs done in this facilities for the last 1 year, overview and characteristics of utilization for exhibition space, conference space, and multi-purpose space, etc were analyzed. Third, through the case study on the programs, individual characteristics of space utilization by convention and exhibition program were analyzed. From the result of the study, considering the whole, the space utilization of programs was done as conference space rather than exhibition space and the ratio of use as conference space to use as exhibition space was 1.8 in the large facilities, 6.7 and 7.6 in the middle facilities and the small facilities, respectively. In the middle and small facilities, the ratio of use of one room as conference space was very high. In the large facilities, there was no big difference with the ratio 50:50 of the programs involving exhibition to other programs, but in the middle and small facilities, the ratio of the former to the latter was observed over 2.4 and 3.6. This fact indicated that the function of use as promotion and communication space for companies and industrial entities which were the essential purposes became low.

The results are following as. First, 19 facilities are located in urban area and nine are located in country side. With locational characteristics of Gangneung which is mountains in west and sea to east, three are located in high hill side and four are in sea shore among nine facilities. Facilities in urban area converge to Gungpodae and Ojukhuk which are symbol space in Gangneung. Those facilities started to have been increased from 1990s and rapidly increased from 2000s. The reason is that people have been interested in culture and art in society in general. In building structure, buildings related with traditional contents were constructed with wooden structure while buildings have been mainly constructed with modern ways such as steel and reinforced concrete structure. Second, the 28 facilities are classified into three types by function of other space or facilities within same a site or a building. The three types are themselves usage only, multi-function, and park type. The multi-function type is re-classified into two; public type and commercial type. Those functions have changed according to changes of society and times. Finally, for approaching to the exhibition-culture facilities with general transportation, the mean distance from the closest bus stop to those facilities each is 280m and 27 facilities are located within 670m from the closest bus stop. For approaching way using by car creates movement along road-building site-parking space-main entrance of building. When based on main entrance by the movement, parking space located in front side of main entrance is the largest, next is in the side, and the least is in back side. • Cheoungju International Craft Biennale is not just an art exhibition but more like a pubic festival which is including an experiential learning and a public participation section as well as a special exhibition and an international competition section. Thus it is strongly required to present an appropriate meaning and mood corresponding to each exhibition hall. The paper has examined the exhibition topics during the last 10 years and the plannings and contents to install the exhibition hall according the yearly topic and it has analyzed the comprehensive evaluations after the exhibition. The research scope is limited to the part related to the exhibition hall and facilities, which is including calculation of dimensions and layout, access and movement system, the appropriateness of the design and construction period, measure of applied technology appropriateness, post management as well as planning intent, estimation of the number of the visitors, preliminaries. With the results shown in the comprehensive evaluation and analysis, the paper has presented two issues, the one related to the procensure and preparation and the other related to the facilities. It is showed that both problems are due to the lack of expertise and it is necessary for the experts to participate from the first step of the procedure including planning for the successful exhibition. For the appropriate exhibition hall corresponding to the exhibition planning and scale, it is required to have the professional considerations of successful space and visitor's movement management, display environment, construction method, and post management. The study presents that architectural and interior design have to take an active part in constructing exhibition design in overall stage including the initial, practice, and evaluation stage.
