  • Structural identification or St-Id is 'the parametric correlation of structural response characteristics predicted by a mathematical model with analogous characteristics derived from experimental measurements'. This paper describes a St-Id exercise on Humber Bridge that adopted a novel two-stage approach to first calibrate and then validate a mathematical model. This model was then used to predict effects of wind and temperature loads on global static deformation that would be practically impossible to observe. The first stage of the process was an ambient vibration survey in 2008 that used operational modal analysis to estimate a set of modes classified as vertical, torsional or lateral. In the more recent second stage a finite element model (FEM) was developed with an appropriate level of refinement to provide a corresponding set of modal properties. A series of manual adjustments to modal parameters such as cable tension and bearing stiffness resulted in a FEM that produced excellent correspondence for vertical and torsional modes, along with correspondence for the lower frequency lateral modes. In the third stage traffic, wind and temperature data along with deformation measurements from a sparse structural health monitoring system installed in 2011 were compared with equivalent predictions from the partially validated FEM. The match of static response between FEM and SHM data proved good enough for the FEM to be used to predict the un-measurable global deformed shape of the bridge due to vehicle and temperature effects but the FEM had limited capability to reproduce static effects of wind. In addition the FEM was used to show internal forces due to a heavy vehicle to to estimate the worst-case bearing movements under extreme combinations of wind, traffic and temperature loads. The paper shows that in this case, but with limitations, such a two-stage FEM calibration/validation process can be an effective tool for performance prognosis.

  • This study was done to determine the situations of stress incontinence(SI) and the differences in general characteristics, obstetrical history and SI related variables between women with stress incontinence and normal women. The design for study was a descriptive study. The number of subjects consisted of 156 women who were selected by systematic random sampling in Kwangju city. Data collection was done with the modified Hendrickson's Stress Incontinence Scale(1981) which was analyzed using frequency and percentiles. The results were as follows : 1. The stress incontinence (SI) rate of the sample was 64.1% and the majority of the women(40.9%) had experienced SI for a period of five years(the mean period was 2.7 years) without any treatment or care(83.0%). The amount of SI was from one drop(40.0%) to one teaspoon(16.7%) daily. 2. Items on the SI scale had the scores ranging from 4 to 44 with a mean score of 13.7 which showed mild SI. 3. The priority of provocative factors for SI were abdominal tightening(83%), coughing(58%), laughing(52%), sneezing(40%), steeping(18%), sudden standing(17%), nose blowing(13%), heavy exercise(11%), rapid walking up-stairs(10%) and excitment (9%) in that order. 4. There were no significant differences in age, education, spouse, job and income between the women with SI and the normal women. 5. There were no significant differences in the age at the last delivery, age of last baby. number of vaginal, or cesarean deliveries, or abdominal operations between the women with SI and the normal women. It can be concluded that SI in women has a high incidence nth various provocative factors but it is relatively mild SI on a daily basis and generally there has been no treatment. It is suggested that a descriptive study of emotional problems and precipitating variables in SI women will increase the knowledge of SI.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the actual conditions of vitamin supplement usage, the importance of their agents for health management, and the distribution of basic data for their correct consumption. For a period of one month 2003, the study was conducted based on questionnaires to the parents of students in both a middle school and a high school, and the personnel of K Company at random. The material used the survey sheets by setting up the previous investigation. The collected data analyzed the frequency and percentage of the following items: General demographic characteristics of consumers; the supplements taking; the reasons for taking them; the kinds of supplements taken; the media used for distributing data on their use; the potential use in the future, etc. According to the survey, the number of people who were taking supplements was higher than the number of people who weren’t taking them. Multi-vitamins were mostly consumed. The rate of supplements consume was high in people of a higher income bracket, had the time to exercise and to enjoy physical recreation. Most of the consumers who were taking the supplements said they did it to maintain their health and to recover from the fatigue. Those who weren’t taking them said they had enough vitamins from eating the appropriate food, and they were also concerned about the effectiveness of taking the supplements. The majority of useful information or advice for purchasing vitamins came from doctors, medical experts, relatives, and various media sources such as TV, newspapers, and magazines.

  • This study was to find out the influence of smoking behavior in Korean adults on chronic diseases using data from the seventh Korea national health and nutrition examination survey(KNHANES VII-2) 2017. The subjects were 6,193. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, x2 test and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 25 complex samples Win program. The main findings were that smoking age and smoking behavior were considered as early as the age of smoking, and in case of smoking in the past, the prevalence of chronic disease increased 1.30 times and 2.75 times, respectively. When the subjects' health behaviors and demographic characteristics were simultaneously corrected, the higher the age was, the more they were 0.25 times higher and 0.34 times higher than the graduate level of education. As a result, it is necessary to improve lifestyles such as obesity and lack of exercise, to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease in Korean adults, and to pay attention to younger age groups. There is a need to develop interdisciplinary convergent approaches with great interest.

  • This study investigated college students' health status, health attitudes, and eating and general health practices. They then were compared to the students' degree of health consciousness. Four hundred college students in Pusan participated in this study, of which 203 were young men and 197 young women. While college students considered that they were generally healthy, there were a number of negative health factors, such as fatigue and stress, particularly amongst the young women. They were not particularly concerned about or active in taking care of their health. There were, for example, problems of smoking and drinking among the young men, and a lack of exercise among female students. Female had more eating problems than male frequency and consistency in the quantity of meals, overeating, and snacking. On the other hand, women seemed to show more possibilities for improving the food habits. Health status did not appear to co vary significantly with the degree of health con sciousness. However, the higher the level of health concern, the more interest in health information and weight gain anxiety students had, and the more active measures in health care they took. Students who had high or moderate concern for health practiced more desirable eating habit than students who lacked this concern. In conclusion, educational programs which can increase concern for health among college students should be prepared in order to maintain their bodily health now and in the future. If such programs were developed with gender differences in mind, making college students take a positive attitude towards health issues and management of their own health, it would be more effective.

  • This study investigated whether dietary factors are more influential factor than other health behavior such as drinking, smoking and exercise on abnormal serum cholesterol level inspite of Korean dietary pattern differences compared to Europeans and Americans. A double case control study model has been used for the study design. One model consisted of high blood cholesterol cases and control. the other model consisted of low blood cholesterol cased and controls. 5.398 sedentary male workers who had taken medical examinations at a university hospital were used as the study subjects. Out of the study subjects, 36individuals with high blood cholesterol cases and 30 individuals with low blood cholesterol cases were selected. For the 66 individual control selection, the individual control selection, the individuals matching method was adopted. The food frequency method was used to collect the data for assessment of the dietary factors. A standardized questionnaire was used to investigate other health behavior. logistic regression analysis was employed to measure the relative importance between the factors considered. There were no statistically significant differences observed in nutrients consumption or other health behavior among the low, normal and high blood cholesterol groups, An overmatching effect had been suspected as the cause of those findings. However, the results of logistic regression analysis to identify the factors influencing high serum cholesterol showed that odd ratios of dietary factors such as tocopherol(3.0) and saturated fatty acid(1.6) were higher than I. I of smoking and 1.2 of drinking. Similar results were also observed incases of low serum cholesterol. The above findings imply that although the dietary pattern is quite different from that of Europeans and America, the dietary factor is still a significant factor for abnormal blood cholesterol in Koreans. Therefore, the dietary risk factor identified in high fat consumption populations are still relevant for the relatively healthy Korean as guideline for preventive health practices.
