  • The objective of this study was to make comparison of the physical work capacities(PWCs) for three different types of tasks. For this purpose, an ergometer exercise, a treadmill exercise, and lifting activities with four different frequencies (2, 5, 8, 11 lifts/min) for the lifting range from floor to 76cm were considered. Oxygen consumption rates and heart rates were measured during the exercises and lifting activities. The PWC values for ergometer exercise test was $2562.71ml-O_2/min$ and the one for treadmill exercise was $2874.89ml-O_2/min$. The value of lifting PWC increased from $1774.07ml-O_2/min$ to $2296.76ml-O_2/min$ as the lifting frequency increased from 2 to 11 lifts/min. The ratio of the lifting PWCs to the ergometer PWC increased from 69.36% to 89.77% as the lifting frequency increased. To the treadmill PWC, the ratio increased from 62.21% to 85.24% as the lifting frequency increased. From this result, it appears that the PWCs based on the lifting tasks rather than PWCs by ergometer or treadmill exercise should be considered to determine the physiological criterion for safe weights for lifting tasks. Therefore, the physiological criteria of the NIOSH Guideline should be reexamined.

  • Stress at work as well as at home is one of the most important issues in the health sector. However, very little research has been to find the relationship between the levels of stress and exercise. In this study, we used a structured questionaires received from 15th June to 29th October 2002 in order to prove the relation between the degree of exercise and stress. A total number of 1,092( 569 male, 523 female) who have worked more than one year were investigated. The results of the study were as follows: (1) The mean levels of stress were lower in the regualr exercise group than in the non-exercise group; (2) The more time spent in exercise, the lower level of stress was shown; (3) It was shown that the association between the frequency of stress was inversely realted to the frequency of exercise in males whereas the levels of stress was lowest in those who exercised less than 2 times per week in females; (4) The levels of stress was lowest in those who exercised more than 1 hour at a time. In summarizing the result of this study, the degree of exercise is realted with stress regardless of gender. Consequently, it is expected that regular and consistent exercise would be an important tools in lowering and protecting the worker's stress.

  • In this research we would like to develop an exercise ECG signal analysis algorithm using the wavelet transform, which is possible to analyze the time and the frequency simultaneously. Wavelet transform has an advantage of dividing the nonstationary signals into the high frequency and low frequency band successively. Thus, it can separates the unnecessary noises from the frequency band of QRS complex and then using the selected frequency band we could detect the QRS complex and ST segment.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the effects of the eccentric exercise induced delayed muscle soreness on proprioception, muscle strength, muscle fatigue, and muscle pain of the elbow flexor muscles. Thirty one healthy male subjects were participated in this study. Before resisted eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors and immediately and at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days post-exercise, pain threshold, proprioception, tension tracking, initial median frequency, and fatigue index were measured. Pain pressure threshold and visual analog scale (VAS) was used to measure muscle pain. Proprioception of the elbow joint was measured by using 3 dimension motion analysis system. Maximum isometric contraction was measured by using digital tensiometer. Electromyography and power spectrum analysis was used to measure initial median frequency (IMF) and fatigue index (FI). Immediately post-exercise, a significant decrease pain threshold was observed that continued to 5 days post-exercise. VAS score was significantly increased at 1 and 3 days post-exercise compared to that of immediately post-exercise. Maximum isometric contraction, IMF, tension tracking ability of the exercised elbow joint were significantly decreased at 1, 3, and 5 days post-exercise compared to that of pre-exercise. FI was significantly increased at 1 and 3 days post-exercise compared that of pre-exercise. Proprioception sense of exercised elbow joint was significantly decreased immediately and at 1, 3, and 5 days post-exercise compared to that of pre-exercise. Proprioception sense of the contralateral elbow joint was significantly decreased immediately post-exercise compared to that of pre-exercise. However, proprioception sense that was measured in close chain kinematic position was not significantly difference between pre-exercise and post-exercise. These results could be useful to determine the resume time for exercising and participating sports activities.
