Noise of the VVVF inverter and DC/DC converter, which are the most dominant noise sources of maglev train at low speed, is studied, The coils inside inverter and converter are excited by electro-magnetic forces, which results in core vibration and generations of the noise. It is found that the spectra of the noise show many harmonics, where there exist several different fundamental frequencies. Some noise reducing techniques are known for the transformer noise such as changing stiffness and using different core materials, which make less electrostatic responses, and consequently less noise. In this study, it is shown that the most effective and feasible noise reducing method is to increase the switching frequencies of the inverter and converter, where peaks in higher frequency are significantly reduced.

This paper presents an approach of predicting the radiated noise due to the structural vibration by internal harmonic forces using the doubly asymptotic approximation (DAA). Acoustic transfer vector is derived from the Helmholtz integral equation and the fluid-structure interaction relation of DAA. Numerical results and analytical results of radiated noise for a cylindrical shell were compared and showed that they were consistent in most of frequencies and radiation directions, but showed errors in some radiated directions in the mid-frequency region. Despite these errors, the prediction method will be suitable for practical radiated noise prediction.

Recent trends in information storage devices disk are the transition from CD drives to high density DVD drives, the development of writable disk drives and the appearance of several high-density portable disk drives. In some flexible disk drives, self-excited disk vibrations become severe as rotation speed increases near or above critical speed. Critical speeds of CD/DVD, ASMO and floppy disks are experimentally measured and compared with analytical predictions. Flutter instability caused by aero-induced disk vibration at high speeds are experimentally observed. In ASMO, three nodal-diameter mode experiences its flutter at 8750 rpm with the frequency lock-on phenomenon. The CD/DVD disk does not have the aero-induce flutter up to 14,000 rpm.

As the disk rotation speed increases in information storage devices, aerodynamically excited disk vibration is induced by airflow around the disk. This paper investigates both experimental and theretical studies on the flutter instability. From the experimental results using an ASMO disk, it is found that the three nodal diameter mode of the optical disk experiences its flutter instability around 8750 rpm. At the flutter speed, the amplitude of the corresponding mode increases dramatically and the backward natural frequency does not increase with increasing rotational speeds. The experimental results on flutter instability are compared with analytical predictions.

A non-linear vibration isolation system which is composed of a non-linear spring and a linear damper was proposed in past research. When the support of the isolation system is excited harmonically, the response component of the isolation system mass at the excitation frequency has been calculated approximately using the harmonic balance method. The response was approximated by a single mode, and the result was compared with a numerical result which is assumed as an accurate one. Next, the response was approximated by two modes, and the result was compared with the former one.

This research presents an analytical model to investigate the stability due to the ball bearing waviness i n a rotating system supported by two ball bearings. The stiffness of a ball bearing changes periodically due to the waviness in the rolling elements as the rotor rotates, and it can be calculated by differentiating the nonlinear contact forces. The linearized equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system in the form of Mathieu's equation, because the stiffness coefficients have time -varying components due to the waviness. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as the simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving the Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by comparing the stability chart with the time responses of the vibration model suggested by prior researches. This research shows that the waviness in the rolling elements of a ball bearing generates the time-varying component of the stiffness coefficient, whose frequency is called the frequency of the parametric excitation. It also shows that the instability takes place from the positions in which the ratio of the natural frequency to the frequency of the parametric excitation corresponds to i/2 (i=1,2,3..).

The results of measurements showing normal vibrations and rubbing noise generated during unlubricated smooth sliding between metal surfaces are presented. The measurements were made on pin-on-disc type apparatus instrumented with piezoelectric acceleration transducers and microphones. Spectral analysis of the both signals up to frequency of 10kHz indicates that they are closely correlated. The major components of both signals in this frequency range are primarily associated with the normal contact vibrations which are excited by surface irregularities being swept through the contact region during sliding. As an approximation to the seismic input of surface irregularities, an effective surface wavenumber spectrum was assumed in the form of an inverse vibration and noise measurements for a number of surface finishes and mean loads. The predominant frequency component of which levels of the normal vibration and noise are close to overall levels of the both signals is induced by contact resonance between the two bodies and its frequency can be calculated from the Hertzian theory.

Energy dissipation devices can be considered as an alternative for the seismic performance enhancement of existing structures based on the strengthened seismic design code. In this study, seismic response mitigation effects of friction dampers are investigated through the shaking table test of a full scale 3 story building structure. Frist, the bilinear force-displacement relationship of a structure-brace-friction damper system and the effect of brace-friction damper on the increase of frequency and damping ratio are identified. Second, frequency, displacement, and torque dependent characteristics of the friction damper are investigated by using harmonic load excitation tests. Finally, the shaking table tests are performed for a full scale 3 story steel frame. System identification results using random signal excitation indicated that brace-friction damper increased structural damping ratio and frequency, and El Centro earthquake test showed that brace-friction damper reduced the peak displacement and acceleration significantly. In particular, it was observed that the damping effect due to friction damper becomed obvious when the structure was excited by more intensive load causing frequent slippage of the friction dampers.

To maximize the productivity in machining molds and dies, machine tools should operate at high speeds. During the high speed operation of moving frames or spindles, vibration problems are apt to occur if the machine tool structures are made of conventional steel materials with inferior damping characteristics. However, self-excited vibration or chatter is bound to occur during high speed machining when cutting speed exceeds the stability limit of machine tool. Chatter is undesirable because of its adverse effect on surface finish, machining accuracy, and tool life. Furthermore, chatter is a major cause of reducing production rate because, if no remedy can be found, metal removal rates have to be lowered until vibration-free performances is obtained. Also, the resonant vibration of machine tools frequently occurs when operating frequency approaches one of their natural frequencies because machine tools have several natural frequencies due to their many continuous structural elements. However, these vibration problems are closely related to damping characteristics of machine tool structures. The polymer concrete has high potential for machine tool bed due to its good damping characteristics with moderate stiffness. This paper presents the use of polymer concrete and sandwich structures to overcome vibration problems. Also, co-cure bonding method for functional part mounting was exhibited experimentally, by which manufacturing time and cost for polymer concrete bed will be remarkably reduced.

Also. its dynamic characteristics were measured by modal tests.
