  • We present an example-based approach to synthesizing physically simulated Rube Goldberg machines in which a series of rigid body elements are sequentially triggered and driven along the causal chain. Given a set of elements, our goal is to automatically instantiate and arrange those elements to meet the user-specified requirements including the start and end positions, and the boundary of movement. To do so, we first sample small-scale machines consisting of only a few elements randomly, and represent the connectivity between every pair of components as a graph structure. Searching over possible paths in this graph solves our problem by finding a path that can be unrolled to satisfy the given requirements, and then assembling components sequentially along the solution path. In order to ensure that the machine works precisely in a physically simulated environment, we finally elaborate the layout of assembled components by a simple greedy algorithm. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by displaying a large diversity of Rube Goldberg machines built with only five kinds of elements.

  • This paper proposes a case-based approach to the conceptual design of mechanism, especially of the generation of design alternatives in function generation and motion transmission tasks. The aim of this work is to generate and provide various design alternatives by utilizing the previous design concepts underling in the existing design cases. The approach is based on the basic idea that the whole design concepts or sub-concepts extracted from different design cases can be merged to generate a variety of new design alternatives. The notion of virtual function generator is introduced to conceptualize and represent all possible underlying design concepts in the prior design cases. The virtual function generators are extracted in advance from the existing mechanism and serve as new conceptual building blocks for the synthesis of mechanism. Various design alternatives are generated basically by merging tow virtual function generators that partially match the specified function. By utilizing the design concepts that have been effectively used in the previous design cases. he proposed approach could efficiently produce more feasible design concepts than from-scratch ones. The approach proposed in this paper is illustrated with a design example.

  • Tight integration of product design and process planning in the early design stage would make bigger impact as wider spectrum of design and manufacturing alternatives can be pursued and evaluated. Thus the development of systematic computer-based support for this integration is desirable. For this integration and process planning in the early design stage. the systematic method to synthesize shape of part from functional requirements is crucial. This research presents the methods of functional decomposition from overall function or product and synthesizing shape of part based on functional relations extracted from functional decomposition using planetary gear transmission system as an example.

  • During the past two decades, a lot of researches have been done on the synthesis of grassroot heat exchanger networks(HEN). However, few have been dedicated to retrofit of existing heat exchanger networks, which usually use more amount of utilities (i.e. steam and/or cooling water) than the minimum requirements. This excess gives motivation of trades-off between energy saving and rearranging investment. In this paper, an algorithmic-evolutionary synthesis procedure for retrofitting heat exchanger networks is proposed. It consists of two stages. First, after the amount of maximum energy recovery(MER) is computed, a grass-root network featuring minimum number of units(MNU) is synthesized. In this stage, a systematic procedure of synthesizing MNU networks is presented. It is based upon the concept of pinch, from which networks are synthesized in a logical way by the heuristics verified by the pinch technology. In the second stage, since an initial feasible network is synthesized based on the pre-analysis result of MER and must-matches, an assignment problem between new and existing units is solved to minimize total required additional areas. After the existing units are assigned, the network can be improved by switching some units. For this purpose, an improvement problem is formulated and solved to utilize the areas of existing units as much as possible. An example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper describes a systematic process which can generate a complete circuit specification efficiently for a given recursive DSP algorithm based on an optimal multiprocessor scheduler. The process is composed of two states: scheduling and circuit synthesis. The scheduling part accepts a fully specified flow graph(FSFG) as an input, and generates an optimal synchronous multiprocessor schedule. Then the circuit synthesis part translates the modified schedule into a complete circuit diagram including a control specification. The circuit diagram can be applied to a silicon compiler for VLSI layout generation. This paper illustrates the whole process with an example of a second order Gray-Market lattice filter.

  • There have been several recent studies concerning the stability of fuzzy control system and the synthesis of stabilizing fuzzy controllers. This paper reports on a related study nf the TS (Takagi-Sugeno) fuzzy systems, and it is shown that the controller synthesis problems for the nonlinear systems described by the TS fuzzy model can be reduced to convex problems involving LMIs (linear matrix ineclualities). After classifying the TS fuzzy systems into three families based on how diverse their input matrices are, different controller synthesis procedure is given for each of these families. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the synthesis procedures developed in this paper.

  • Analysis of geological data, relating to occurrence and formation of diamonds as well as host rocks, inclined author to have different outlook on the diamond genesis and to establish a proposition on their formation at pneumatolytic-hydrothermal conditions near superficial Earth zones. Based on that theoretical foundations and experimental works, the first low-pressure and low-temperature hydrothermal diamond synthesis from water solution in pressure autoclave was executed. As a result, the natural diamond seed crystal grew bigger ad coupling of the synthetic diamond single-crystalline grains were obtained. SEM documentation proofs that parallely paragenetic crystallization of quartz and diamond, and nucleation of new octahedral diamond crystals brush take place on the seed crystal surface. Forecast of none times growth of diamond industrial application at 2000 and seventeen times at 2010 with reference to 1995, needs technology of large and pure single-crystals diamond synthesis. Growth of the stable and destressed diamond single-crystals in the pseudo-metastable diamond plot, may be realized with processes going through the long time and with participation of free radicals catalysts admixtures only. Sol-gel colloidal processes are an example of environment which form stable crystals in thermodynamically unstable conditions through a long time. Paper critically discusses a whole way of studies on the diamond synthesis, from high-pressure and high-temperature processes through chemical vapour deposition up to hydrothermal experiments.

  • This paper describes the synthesis of robust decentralized controllers for uncertain large-scale discrete-time systems with time-delays in subsystem interconnections. Based on the Lyapunov method, a sufficient condition for robust stability, is derived in terms of a linear matrix inequality(LMI). The solutions of the LMI can be easily obtained using various efficient convex optimization techniques. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed method.

  • The sol-gel process enables the preparation of ceramic thin films ranging in characteristics from dense to highly porous layers. Based on the example of silica layers, this paper focuses on the importance of the choice of the various synthesis parameters to tailor the porosity of the final material and new opportunities associated to the templating effect. The problems related to the characterization of the porosity in the case of thin films are also considered.
