  • Data packets from sensor nodes scattered over measuring fields are generally forwarding to the sink node, which may be connected to the wired networks, in a wireless sensor network. So many data packets are gathered near the sink node, resulting in significant data packet collisions and severe transmission latency. In an event detection application such as object tracking and military, bursty data is generated when an event occurs. So many data packet should be transmitted in a limited time to the sink node. In this paper, we present a delay efficient and bursty traffic friendly MAC protocol called DEBF-MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks. The DEBF-MAC uses a slot-reserved mechanism and sleep period control method to send multiple data packets efficiently in an operational cycle time. Our simulation results show that DEBF-MAC outperforms DW-MAC and SR-MAC in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay.

  • This paper proposes a fault-tolerant data aggregation which provides energy efficient and reliable data collection in wireless sensor networks. The traditional aggregation scheme does not provide the countermeasure to packet loss or the countermeasure scheme requires a large amount of energy. The proposed scheme applies caching and re-transmission based on the track topology to the adaptive timeout scheduling. The proposed scheme uses a single-path routing based on the traditional tree topology at normal, which reduces the dissipated energy in sensor nodes without any countermeasure against packet loss. The proposed scheme, however, retransmits the lost packet using track topology under event occurrences in order to fulfill more accurate data aggregation. Extensive simulation work under various workloads has revealed that the proposed scheme decrease by 8% in terms of the dissipated energy and enhances data accuracy 41% when the potential of event occurrence exists as compared with TAG data aggregation. And the proposed scheme decrease by 53% in terms of the dissipated energy and shows a similar performance in data accuracy when the potential of event occurrence exists as compared with PERLA data aggregation.

  • In this paper, the development of a simulator for the performance estimation and parameter optimization of an integrates voice/data packet communication network is described. The simulator implemented is capable of simulating the integrated voice/data network that handles packet voice terminals as well as data terminals and hosts operating under standard CCITT protocols. Of the three descrete event simulation approaches presently known, the process interaction method has been chose. With this approach one can implement a simulator that is related most Closely with the real system. The simulator has been implemented in PL/I and GPSS simulation languages, resulting in a software package of about 4,000 lines. To reduce the computer run time of the simulator, we have used a method of reducing conditional events based on a GPSS LINK block. We describe various aspects of the simulation model developed. We then investigate the performance of a 7-node network using the simulator, and present the results. For validation of the simulator developed, we construct a simulation model for a simple voice/ data multiplexer, and compare the results of simulation with those of an analytical model.

  • ISPs and Enterprises are equipping their networks with sufficiently high speed facilities and provide large bandwidths members. However the high speed enterprise network does not have satisfying end-to-end network performance within the network in spite of under utilization. The root cause of this performance degradation is a micro-congestion, which is a short-live event of traffic congestion. A micro-congestion causes packet loss, delay and packet reodering, and finally results in end-to-end network performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a micro-congestion detection method and find out the characteristics of performance degradation by analyzing traffic archives which is collected from a network link when a micro-congestion occurs.

  • In this paper, we propose a high-level programming language for packet processing called eFlowC and it supporting programming development environment. Based on the C language which is already familiar and easy to use to program developers, eFlowC maintains the similar syntax and semantics of C. Some features that are unnecessary for the packet processing has been removed from C, eFlowC is highly focused on performing packet data, database, string byte information checking and event processing. Design high-level programming languages and apply an existing language or compiler technology, language function and compilation process that is required for packet processing will be described. In order to use the DPIC device such as X11, we designed a virtual machine eFVM that takes into account the scalability and portability. We have evaluated the utility of the proposed language by experimenting a variety of real application programs with our programming environment such as compiler, simulator and debugger for eFVM. As there is little research that devoted to define the formats, meanings and functions of the packet processing language, this research is significant and expected to be a basis for the packet processing language.

  • As inter-network traffics grows rapidly, the router systems as a network component becomes to be capable of not only wire-speed packet processing but also plentiful programmability for quality services. A network processor technology is widely used to achieve such capabilities in the high-end router. Although providing two such capabilities, the network processor can't support a deep packet processing at nominal wire-speed. Considering QoS may result in performance degradation of processing packet. In order to achieve foster processing, one chipset of network processor is occasionally not enough. Using more than one urges to consider a problem that is, for instance, an out-of-order delivery of packets. This problem can be serious in some applications such as voice over IP and video services, which assume that packets arrive in order. It is required to develop an effective packet processing mechanism leer using more than one network processors in parallel in one linecard unit of the router system. Simulation analysis is also needed for verifying the mechanism. We propose the packet processing mechanism consisting of more than two NPs in parallel. In this mechanism, we use a load-balancing algorithm that distributes the packet traffic load evenly and keeps the sequence, and then verify the algorithm with simulation analysis. As a simulation tool, we use DEVSim++, which is a DEVS formalism-based hierarchical discrete-event simulation environment developed by KAIST. In this paper, we are going to show not only applicability of the DEVS formalism to hardware modeling and simulation but also predictability of performance of the load balancer when implemented with FPGA.

  • The session management overhead on the network systems like firewalls or intrusion detection systems is getting grown as the session table is glowing. In this paper. we propose the event-based timeout management policy to increase packet processing throughput on network systems by decreasing the system's timeout management overhead that is comparable to the existing time-based timeout management policies. Through some empirical studies using a session management system implemented in this paper we probed that the proposed policy provides better packet processing throughput than the existing policies.

  • In this paper we propose a QoS-enhanced intelligent stochastic optimal fair real-time packet scheduler, QUEST, for 4G LTE traffic in routers. The objective of this research is to maximize the system QoS subject to the constraint that the processor utilization is kept nearly at 100 percent. The QUEST has following unique advantages. First, it solves the challenging problem of starvation for low priority process - buffered streaming video and TCP based; second, it solves the major bottleneck of the scheduler Earliest Deadline First's failure at heavy loads. Finally, QUEST offers the benefit of arbitrarily pre-programming the process utilization ratio.Three classes of multimedia 4G LTE QCI traffic, conversational voice, live streaming video, buffered streaming video and TCP based applications have been considered. We analyse two most important QoS metrics, packet loss rate (PLR) and mean waiting time. All claims are supported by discrete event and Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results show that the QUEST scheduler outperforms current state-of-the-art benchmark schedulers. The proposed scheduler offers 37 percent improvement in PLR and 23 percent improvement in mean waiting time over the best competing current scheduler Accuracy-aware EDF.

  • Simulation and physical implementation are both valuable tools in evaluating sensor network routing protocols, but neither alone is sufficient. In this paper, we present the implementation and analysis of sensor routing protocols on the discrete-event simulation system that allows existing nesC codes of sensor network routing protocols to be used to create a physical implementation of the same protocol. We have evaluated the Surge function of TinyOS through example implementations in the Ptolemy II of the unmodified codes and Direct-diffusion routing protocols using VIPTOS simulation models.

  • Network event analysis gives useful information on the network status that helps protect attacks. It involves finding sets of frequently used packet information such as IP addresses and requires real-time processing by its nature. Apriori algorithm used for data mining can be applied to find frequent item sets, but is not suitable for analyzing network events on real-time due to the high usage of CPU and memory and thus low processing speed. This paper develops a network event audit module by applying association rules to network events using a new algorithm instead of Apriori algorithm. Test results show that the application of the new algorithm gives drastically low usage of both CPU and memory for network event analysis compared with existing Apriori algorithm.
