A series of methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) $(MPEG)-poly(\varepsilon-co-L-lactide)$ (PCLA) diblock copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of a mixture of $\varepsilon-caprolactone$ and L-lactide with different ratios in the presence of $Sn(Oct)_2$. The characterization of MPEG-PCLA diblock copolymers were examined by $^1H-NMR$, GPC, DSC, and XRD. Kinetic study on ring-opening polymerization of monomer mixtures was carried out in various conditions such as a variation with polymerization time, amount of catalyst, and temperature. The highest conversion obtained in 1.2 ratic of initiator venn catalyst at $110\;^{\circ}C$. The biodegradable characterization of MPEG-PCLA diblock copolymers in aqueous solution was carried out by using GPC for $1\~14$ weeks. The biodegradability of MPEG-PCLA diblock copolymers increased as the L-lactide content of diblock copolymers increased. In conclusion, we confirmed the dependence of polymerization rate according to various conditions. In addition, we can control the biodegradability of MPEC-PCLA diblock copolymers by changing the ratio of PCL and PLA block segment.
The pore surface of mesoporous materials, SBA-15 and MCM-41 were functionalized with organosilanes, 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (1NS) and N-[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (2NS) via grafting method. $(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ and methylaluminoxane (MAO) were impregnated on the surface-functionalized mesoporous materials for the application to ethylene polymerization. In the case of SBA-15/2NS/$(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ supported Zr and Al contents decreased as grafted 2NS content increased. However, in the case of MCM-41/2NS/$(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ supported Al content decreased, but Zr content increased as grafted 2NS content increased. The polymerization activity of SBA-15/2NS/$(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ increased as the amount of grafted 2NS increased. Increase in the amount of grafted 2NS should caused decrease in pore volume and diameter. Consequently, it decreased the amount of supported metallocene and MAO in general. However, the smaller pore-sized MCM-41 could have lower supported MAO content due to its large molecular size in case that MCM-41 was surface-functionalized with 2NS. Therefore, the supported metallocene content could increase and its polymerization activity was higher than that of SBA-15.

Polyolefin-g-poly(t-butylstyrene) as one of the high-temperature polyolefin-based thermoplastic elastomers was synthesized by the graft-from anionic living polymerization from the styrene moieties of the linear poly(ethylene-ter-1-hexene-ter-divinylbenzene) as a soft block to form the hard end blocks, poly(t-butylstyrene). The chemistry of the anionic graft-from polymerization involved complete lithiation of the pendant styrene unit of the soft polyolefin elastomer with sec-BuLi/TMEDA followed by the subsequent graft anionic polymerization of 4-tert-butylstyrene with Mn=10,000~30,000 g/mol. The graft-from living anionic polymerization were very effective and the grafting size increased proportionally with increasing monomer concentration and the reaction times. The synthetic methodology for the multi-hydroxyl chain-end modified polyolefin-g-poly(t-butylstyrene) was proposed by using the thiol-ene click reaction between 2-mercaptoethanol and the polyolefin-g-[poly(t-butylstyrene)-b-high vinyl polyisoprene], which was obtained from the subsequent living block copolymerization using polyolefin-g-Poly(t-butylstyrene) with isoprene. The result indicated that this process produced a new well-defined functionalized graft-type polyolefin-based TPE with high $T_g$ hard block(> $145^{\circ}C$).
Chitosan is known to be a good biocompatible natural polymer. Polyethyleneglycol monomethacrylates(PEGM) were grafted onto chitosan and their reaction conditions and properties of the graft polymers obtained were estimated. Using ceric ammonium nitrate(CAN) as the initiator, the optimum condition for graft polymerization was determined amount of the initiator and monomer concentrations and reaction time. Grafting yields such as total conversion, the percentage of grafting and the efficiency of grafting were calculated and examined the optimum reaction condition for high grafting yields. The percentage of grafting and total conversion were maximum at condition that the concentration of initiator was $4{\sim}5{\times}10^{-3}M$, the concentration of monomer was 0.5~0.6M, the reaction time was 2~3 hours and the reaction temperature was about $40^{\circ}C$. Thermal characteristics, solubility for chitosan solvents and inherent viscosity of synthesized graft copolymers were investigated. In high initiator concentration, characteristics of chitosan were greatly diminshed. In case of inherent viscosities, chitosan-g-PE-90 was 2.81 dl/g, chitosan-g-PE-200, 3.01dl/g and chitosan-g-PE-350, 4.93dl/g. And a tendency of viscosity increase depending on the length of ethylene oxide residue was confirmed. Degree of swelling, tensile strength, elongation of membrane prepared from graft copolymers were determined. Properties of graft copolymers were affected by percentage of grafting and length of ethylene oxides residue in polyethylene glycol monomethacrylates. Tensile strength, elongation and degree of swelling of graft copolymers were remarkably improved than chitosan. As percentage of grafting increased, the amount of drug permeation was also increased.
The new dinuclear CGC (constrained geometry complexes) with indenyl and methyl sub-stituted indenyl and polymethylene bridge have been synthesized, and the copolymerization of ethylene and styrene has been studied in the presence of methylalumionoxane. The activity of 12-methylene and 9-methylene bridged dinuclear CGC were 4 times higher than that of 6-methylene bridged dinucleay CGC. This result might be understood by the implication that the steric effect rather than the electronic effect nay play a major role to direct the polymerization behavior of the dinuclear CGC. The dinuclear CGCs are very efficient to incorporate styrene in backbone. The styrene contents in the formed co-polymers ranged from 6 to 45 mol% according to the polymerization conditions. The melting temperature of copolymers disappeared at high content of styrene (about 11 mol%) There is no styrene-styrene diblock sequence in copolymers. This result Indicates that the dinuclear CGC are very effective to generate random copolymer of ethylene and styrene.
The dinuclear half-sandwich CGCs (constrained geometry catalyst) with a polymethylene bridge, $[Ti({\eta}^5 : {\eta}^1-indenyl)SiMe_2NCMe_3]_2(CH_2)_n]$[n = 6 (1) and 12 (2)], have been employed in the copolymerization of ethylene and norbornene (NBE). To compare the mononuclear metallocene catalysts; $Ti({\eta}^5 : {\eta}^1-2-hexylindenyl)SiMe_2NCMe_3$ (3), $(Cp^* SiMe_2NCMe_3)$Ti (Dow CGC) (4) and ansa-$Et(Ind)_2ZrCI_2$ (5), were also studied for the copolymerization of ethylene and NBE. It was found that the activity increased in the order: 1 < 2 < 3 < 5 < 4, indicating that the presence of the bridge between two the CGC units contributed to depressing the polymerization activity of the CGCs. This result strongly suggests that the implication of steric disturbance due to the presence of the bridge may playa significant role in slowing the activity. Dinuclear CGCs have been found to be very efficient for the incorporation of NBE onto the polyethylene backbone. The NBE contents in the copolymers formed ranged from 10 to 42%, depending on the polymerization conditions. Strong chemical shifts were observed at ${\delta}$42.0 and 47.8 of the isotactic alternating NBE sequences, NENEN, in the copolymers with high NBE contents. In addition, a resonance at 47.1 ppm for the sequences of the isolated NBE, EENEE, was observed in the $^{13}C-NMR$ spectra of the copolymers with low NBE contents. The absence of signals for isotactic dyad at 48.1 and 49.1 ppm illustrated there were no isotactic or microblock (NBE-NBE) sequences in the copolymers. This result indicated that the dinuclear CGCs were effective for making randomly distributed ethylene-NBE copolymers.
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabric/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composite with stable and high electrochemical activity was fabricated by chemical and electrochemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) on a PET fabric in sequence. Effects of polymerization conditions on the following characteristics of the composite were studied: electrical conductivity and surface morphology. The electrochemical properties were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry and cyclic charge/discharge experiments. The specific volume resistivity, electrical conductivity and specific discharge capacitance of the composite were 0.034 $\Omega-cm$ and 25 S/cm, and 54.5 F/g, respectively.

A synthesis of azide-terminated glycidyl azide polymer, GAP-A, was carried out by tosylation and azidation of polyepichlorohydrin(PECH) prepared by cationic ring-opening polymerization. Polyepichlorohydrin was prepared by cationic activated monomer polymerization using ethylene glycol and $BF_3{\cdot}OEt_2$ as an initiator and a catalyst at $\~10^{\circ}C$. Tosylation of polyepichlorohydrin was performed using traditional TsCl/pyridine method and was also carried out using TsCl/amine catalysts to reduce the reaction time significantly. Azidation of tosyl-terminated PECH(OTs-PECH) was performed using $NaN_3$ as an azidation reagent in DMF solvent at high temperature and was unexpectedly completed within 2 hours.
The sol to gel transition of aqueous solution of block copolymers consisting of methoxy poly (ethylene glycol) (MPEG) and biodegradable polyesters such as $\varepsilon$-caprolactone and L-lactide was investigated as a function of temperature. MPEG-PCL was prepared by ring opening polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone in the presence of HClㆍEt$_2$O as monomer activator at room temperature. Also, MPEG-PLLA was prepared by ring opening polymerization of L-lactide in the presence of stannous octoate at 115$^{\circ}C$. The properties of block copolymers were investigated by $^1$H-NMR, IR, and GPC as well as the observation of thermo sensitive phase transition in aqueous solution. As the hydrophobic block length increased, the sol to gel transition temperature increased and curve of that steepen to lower concentration. To confirm the gel formation at body temperature, we observed the formation of gel in the mice body after injection of 20 wt% aqueous solution of each block copolymer. After surging, we investigated the gelation in mice. The results obtained in this study confirmed the feasibility as biomaterials of injectable implantation for controlled release of drug and protein delivery.
We have synthesized a novel macromonomer of vinyl-terminated bifunctional polyurethane having a molecular weight of 37,000 g/mol and successfully applied it to the dispersion polymerization of methylmethacrylate(MMA). We verified the presence of the vinyl terminal group and the macromonomer grafted onto the poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) block in the PMMA particles by using $^1$H and $\^$13/C NMR spectroscopies. Monodisperse PMMA microspheres that have good uniformity of 1.01 were prepared at 20 wt% macromonomer content; we investigated the characteristics of the PMMA particles in terms of their molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, size of the particles, thermal properties, and glass transition temperature. We have found that the synthesized polyurethane macromonomer is an effective stabilizer.
