Viscoelastic and Gelation Studies of SEBS Thermoplastic Elastomer in Different Hydrocarbon Oils

  • Poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene](SEBS) triblock copolymer was studied by dissolving the ethylene butylene midblock in selective hydrocarbon oils. These oils differ in their aromatic, paraffinic and naphthenic content. Dynamic rheological studies showed that the storage modulus (G') exceeded the loss modulus (G') for all the gels over the entire range of frequency, thereby confirming them as physical gels. However, the behavior of G' and G' as a function of frequency depended primarily on the oil type. The gelation melting temperature decreased drastically with increased oil aromaticity. Small angle X-ray scattering studies revealed that the maximum interdomain interference shifted to a higher angle depending on the composition and type of hydrocarbon oil.

  • The effect of synthetic polymer membranes on the permeation rate of dideoxynucleoside-type anti-HIV drugs through hairless rat skin was studied using ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and ethylene/methyl acrylate copolymer (EMA) membranes fabricated by solvent casting method. In vitro skin permeation kinetics study of DDC (2',3'-dideoxythymidine), DDI (2',3'-dideoxyinosine) and AZT (3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine) across the (membrane/skin) composite was conducted for 24 hours at $37^{\circ}C$ using the Valia-Chien skin permeation system. The results showed that skin permeation rate of each drug across the (skin/membrane) composite was mainly dependent on the property of the membrane. Proper selection of the polymeric membrane which resembles hydrophilicity/lipophilicity of the delivering drug was important in controlling the skin permeation rate.

  • We synthesized ethylene-styrene copolymer by coordination polymerization using 2 types of pyrazolato metallocene catalysts ((1,2,4-Me3C5H4)TiCl2(3,5-iPr2C3HN2), (tert-BuC5H4) TiCl2(3,5-iPr2C3HN2)). We observed the effects of styrene concentration on the catalytic activity, yield, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.

Surfactant-Free Microspheres of Poly(${\varepsilon}-caprolactone$)/Poly(ethylene glycol)/Poly(${\varepsilon}-caprolactone$) Triblock Copolymers as a Protein Carrier

  • The aim of this study is to prepare biodegradable microspheres without the use of surfactants or emulsifiers for a novel sustained delivery carriers of protein drugs. A poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)/poly(ethylene glycol)/poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (CEC) triblock copolymer was synthesized by the ring-opening of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone with dihydroxy poly (ethylene glycol) to prepare surfactant-free microspheres. When dichloromethane (DCM) or ethyl formate (EF) was used as a solvent, the formation of microspheres did not occur. Although the microspheres could be formed prior to lyophilization under certain conditions, the morphology of microspheres was not maintained during the filtration and lyophilization process. Surfactant-free microspheres were only formed when ethyl acetate (EA) was used as the organic solvent and showed good spherical micro-spheres although the surfaces appeared irregular. The content of the protein in the micro-sphere was lower than expected, probably because of the presence of water channels and pores. The protein release kinetics showed a burst release until 2 days and after that sustained release pattern was showed. Therefore, these observations indicated that the formation of microsphere without the use of surfactant is feasible, and, this the improved process, the protein is readily incorporated in the microsphere.

Characterization of Linear Polymer-Dendrimer Block Copolymer/Plasmid DNA Complexes: Formation of Core-shell Type Nanoparticles with DNA and Application to Gene Delivery in Vitro

  • A hybrid linear polymer-dendrimer block copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(L-lysine) dendrimer, was synthesized and introduced to form polyionic complexes with DNA. The copolymer formed core-shell type nanoparticles with plasmid DNA. From dynamic light scattering experiments, the mean diameter of the polyplexes was observed to be 154.4 nm. The complex showed much increased water solubility compared to poly(L-lysine). The plasmid DNA in polyplexes was efficiently protected from the enzymatic digestion of DNase I. The cytotoxicity and transfection efficiency for 293 cells was measured in comparison with poly(Llysine).

  • In this study, block copolymer of polystyrene and polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate(PEGMA) by ATRP(atom transfer radical polymerization) method was synthesized. 4 arm-molecule which contained halogen atom was synthesized for an initiator. With 4 arm-molecule monodispered polystyrene were synthesized by ATRP method. The molecular change of synthesized monodispersed polystyrene with respect to time was investigated and living polymer characteristic was confirmed. Block copolymer of polystyrene and polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate(PEGMA) was synthesized by ATRP with macroinitiator which was synthesized from the monodispersed polystyrene(Mn=12000). The molecular weight of obtained PS-b-PEGMA was 22,000.

  • In this work continuous thermodynamics was adopted for describing the influence of copolymer polydispersity on phase separations in random copolymer solutions. Continuous themodynamic frameworks were formulated using the Flory-Huggin's excess Gibbs free energy model in which the concentration- and temperature-depentent terms of interaction parameter x were modified. Cloud-point curves and coexistence curves of poly(ethylene-vinylactate)/methylacetate solutions and poly(ehtylene-vinylacetate)/ethylacetate solutions were measured, and experimental data were fitted with theoretical relations formulated in this work. Calculated could-point curves were more good ageeable with experimental data than the modified Flory-Huggins's relations. Coexistence curves which were evaluated by using parameters of x estimated from experimental cloud-point curves, were found to coincide with experimental data.

Properties of the Blends of Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate and Ethylene-$\alpha$-Olefins Copolymers

  • The effect of the vinyl acetate (VA) content on the thermal, viscoelastic, rheological, morphological and mechanical behaviors in various blends of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers was investigated using 28, 22 and $15 mol\%$ of VA in EVA. In the DSC melting and crystallization thermograms of all of the EVA systems blended with ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers, discrete peaks were observed which were related to the constituents. In the dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, the storage modulus increased with increasing content of ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers. In addition, the transition regions relating to the tan bpeaks varied with the VA content. The crossover point between G' and G" varied depending on the VA contents, and shear-thinning was more prominent in the EVA/EtBC system. In the SEM investigation, a discrete phase morphology was observed in both the EVA/EtBC and EVA/EtOC blends, but the contrast improved with decreasing VA content. However, the tensile strength and modulus improved, but the elongation at break reduced with decreasing VA content, implying that the ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin copolymers play the role of reinforcing materials. Thus, the EVA and ethylene-$\alpha$-olefin components in the copolymers are immiscible in the molten and solid states, but are nevertheless mechanically compatible.

  • The copolymerization of ethylene and norbornene was carried out with ansa-metallocene and modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) cocatalyst. The copolymerization behavior was changed with the structure of metallocene catalysts. In addition the catalyst activity was dependent on the structure of MMAO, i.e.. MMAO-4 which contains less i-butyl group compared to MMAO-3A exhibited higher catalyst activity than MMAO-3A. The glass transition temperature and the composition of the produced copolymer were not affected by MMAO type.
