  • The kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa cv. 'Hayward') should be ripened at any step during postharvest handling before consumer consumption. This is essential for freshly harvested kiwi fruit. But, this requires correct temperatures and ethylene concentrations. More testing of a newly developed ethylene generator using charcoal for commercial purposes is needed. This study was conducted to investigate the optimum storage temperatures and the effect of ethylene on the postharvest quality of kiwi fruit. Three different ethylene concentrations of 10, 50, and $100{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were used on fresh kiwi fruit stored at different temperatures of 10, 15, and $20^{\circ}C$. The quality changes of the fruits were assessed by sensory evaluation and by measuring firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, and ethylene production. Higher storage temperatures and ethylene concentrations softened the kiwi fruit quickly and led to the rapid loss of acidity while soluble solid contents of fruit increased to a significant extent during the same storage period. Similarly, the firmness of ethylene-treated fruits stored at 20 and $15^{\circ}C$ dramatically decreased in the experiment while treated fruits stored at $10^{\circ}C$ decreased only slightly. Quality characteristics of kiwi fruits stored at 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ were better than those of fruits at $10^{\circ}C$. With regards to the effect of temperature, fruits stored at lower temperatures took a longer time to ripen and retained their quality longer. The newly developed ethylene generator maintained the ethylene concentration in the 5 kg box at $40-400{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The ethylene generator could also be used to soften persimmons.

  • Copolyesters (PEHT) of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly (1,4-phenylene terephthalate) (PHT) were synthesized by the solution polymerization with the PHT unit contents of less than 30 mol %, and their physical properties were studied. As the content of PHT unit in PEHT was increased, glass transition temperature, crystallization rate, thermal stability increased, whereas melting temperature decreased. When the PHT unit contents were 16.5 and 24.9 mol%, nematic mesophase was observed. Wide angle X-ray diffraction pattern showed the peaks originated from both PET unit and PHT unit.

  • 'Formosa' plums were picked at three maturity stages according to skin redness, treated with $1{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP at $10^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and then stored for 21 days at $10^{\circ}C$. Ethylene production, respiration rate, firmness, color, TSS, TA, and ethanol concentration were determined. Total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant capacity were determined periodically by separating the flesh from the peel. Ethylene production and respiration rate were strongly inhibited in all stages of the 1-MCP-treated fruit, while ethylene production dramatically increased in all stages of non-treated fruit until 11 days after harvest, after which it decreased until the end of the experiment. The respiration rate of the stored fruit increased for 11 days in stages 1 and 2 and for 7 days in stage 3 and decreased after. 1-MCP-treated fruit in all stages showed delay in fruit quality changes such as firmness, TA, skin color, and ethanol concentration, but non-treated fruit did not. Total phenolic contents, total flavonoid contents and antioxidant capacity of 'Formosa' plums were not affected by 1-MCP treatment or maturity stage. However, those values were higher in the peel than in the flesh.

  • Porous membranes were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)/glycerol mixtures. The liquid-liquid (L-L) phase boundaries are shifted to higher temperature when the ethylene contents in EVOH increase. Moreover, the kinetic study proved that the growth of droplets formed by the general liquid-liquid (L-L) phase separation obeyed a power-law scaling relationship in the later stage of spinodal decomposition (SD). A new phase separation mechanism was presented, in which the L-L phase separation could be resulted from the crystallization. The hollow fiber membranes were prepared. The membranes showed asymmetric structures with skin layer near the outer surface, the larger pores just below the skin layer and the smaller pores near the inner surface. The effect of ethylene content (EC) in EVOH, cooling water bath temperature and take-up speed on membrane performance was investigated.

  • In this study, physical properties of poly(vinyl acetate-co-ethylene) (VAE) emulsion were investigated by adding different amounts of di-butyl phthalate (DBP) which is a common plasticizer of VAE. The glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ of the dried plasticized VAE emulsion film, which measured by Differential Scanning Calorimeter, was decreased with increasing the DBP contents while the viscosity of the plasticized VAE emulsion was increased with the DBP contents. These results suggest that the plasticizer in the dried VAE film can prevent the strong interaction between chains, resulted by the decrease of $T_g$. In the emulsion, however, the particle sizes were swelled by the penetration of plasticizers and then its viscosity increased with the DBP content. When the DBP was added, the mechanical properties of the plasticized VAE films, such as tensile strength, elongation and creep resistance, were decreased while the water resistance was increased.

  • A series of experiments using atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasma coupled with transition metal catalysts were performed to remove ethylene from agricultural storage facilities. The non-thermal plasma was created by dielectric barrier discharge, which was in direct contact with the catalyst pellets. The transition metals such as Ag and $V_2O_5$ were supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The effect of catalyst type, specific input energy (SIE) and oxygen content on the removal of ethylene was examined to understand the behavior of the hybrid plasma-catalytic reactor system. With the other parameters kept constant, the plasma-catalytic activity for the removal of ethylene was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ from high to low. Interestingly, the rate of plasma-catalytic ozone generation was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, implying that the catalyst activation mechanisms by plasma are different for different catalysts. The results obtained by varying the oxygen content indicated that nitrogen-derived reactive species dominated the removal of ethylene under oxygen-lean condition, while ozone and oxygen atoms were mainly involved in the removal under oxygen-rich condition. When the plasma was coupled with $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, nearly complete removal of ethylene was achieved at oxygen contents higher than 5% by volume (inlet ethylene: 250 ppm; gas flow rate: $1.0Lmin^{-1}$; SIE: ${\sim}355JL^{-1}$).

  • Block copolymers consisting of poly(rbenzyl L-glutamate) (PBLG) as the hydrophobic part and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the hydrophilic part were synthesized and characterized. Polymeric micelles of the block copolymers (abbreviated GEG) were prepared by a dialysis method. The GEG block copolymers were associated in water to form polymeric micelles, and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of the block copolymers decreased with increasing PBLG chain length in the block copolymers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed polymeric micelles of spherical shapes. From dynamic light scattering (DLS) study, sizes of polymeric micelles of GEG-1, GEG-2, and GEG-3 copolymer were 106.5±59.2 nm, 79.4±46.0 nm, and 37.9±13.3 nm, respectively. The drug loading contents of GEG-1, GEG-2 and GEG-3 polymeric micelles were 12.6, 11.9, and 11.0 wt %, respectively. These results indicated that the drugloading contents were dependent on PBLG chain length in the copolymer; the longer the PBLG chain length, the more the drug-loading contents. Release of norfloxacin (NFX) from the nanoparticles was slower in higher loading contents of NFX than in lower loading contents due to the hydrophobic interaction between PBLG core and NFX.

  • Poly(p-hydroxybenzoate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) 8/2 thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyester, poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and PET were mechanically blended to obtain the pseudo liquid crystalline (LC) phase of ternary blends. The torque values of blends with increasing PHB content were abruptly decreased above 40 wt% of PHB content, because the melt viscosity of ternary blends decreased. Tensile strength and initial modulus of blends containing above 30 wt% PHB were improved with increasing PHB content. Tensile strength and modulus of fiber were increased with PHB contents and take-up speed. Degree of transesterification and randomness of blends were increased with blending time. The blend of 40 wt% PHB was shown pseudo LC phase in the polarized optical photographs. Crystallinity of PHB/PEN/PET ternary blend were increased with PHB content.

  • Flavor-related components were analyzed for dried oak mushrooms (Lentinus edodes) when subjected to ethylene oxide and gamma energy. Volatile flavor components identified by GC and GC-MS were composed primarily of l-oden-3-ol (72.8%), 3-octanone (11.5%) and dimethyl disulfide (6.7%). Most of volatile components were shown labile to the standard cycle of ethylene oxide and 5 kGy-gamma energy, while insignificant changes were observed in the contents of free sugars (mannitol, arabitol, trehalose) and free amino acids. Instrumental analysis have shown, however, that the deterimental effects on flavor-related components were more apparent in EO-fumigated groups than in gamma-irradiated ones, even though the organo-leptic test revealed no significant differences between treated samples and the corresponding control.
