Ethanol, total saponin and petroleum ether extract of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer were tested for their anticlastogenic effects against induction of micronuclei by cyclophosphamide and benzo(a)pyrene in mice. Ginseng petroleum ether extract (GPEE) showed the highest suppressive effect among three extracts. GPEE was also tested to compare their anticlastogenic effect against several well-known carcinogens: such as mitomycin C, 7, 12-dimethyl benzo(a)anthracene, ethyl methane sulfonate, dimethylnitrosamine and busulfan. GPEE showed the anticlastogenic effect against most of carcinogens, although there were no significant effects against 7, 12-dimethyl benzo(a) anthracene, dimethyl nitrosoamine and busulfan-induced micronuclei.

Artemisia argyi H. has been used for centuries as a traditional medicine and food supplement in Asian countries. The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological activities of Artemisia argyi H. extracts prepared by butanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethyl ether, hexane, and methanol extraction. We evaluated total phenol and flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) release, and osteoclastogenesis inhibition. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were highest in the methanol extract (49.46 mg GAE/g and 24.32 mg QE/g, respectively). The methanol extracts also had the highest antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging ability and ferric reducing antioxidant power), while the hexane extract had the lowest. The release of NO and ROS was dose-dependently decreased by pre-treatment with all solvent extracts. At the same concentrations, the ethyl acetate and butanol extracts showed higher inhibition of NO and ROS production when compared with the other extracts. The butanol extract, at a concentration of $20{\mu}g/ml$, inhibited about 89% of the activity of the osteoclast marker, tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). These results suggest that butanol extracts of Artemisia argyi H. may be effective natural medications for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer globally. The effects of several extracts from soybeans and Korean soybean paste (doen-jang) on the growth of human oral carcinoma cells in vitro were assessed. We prepared petroleum ether extract, ethyl acetate extract, chloroform extract, methanol extract, and water extract from soybeans and soybean paste. We used KB cell, which is an oral epidermoid carcinoma cell, and investigated proliferation of the tumor cells using MTT method. Each extract of soybean paste suppressed the KB cell proliferation. A dose-response relationship was observed between the level of ethyl acetate extract of soybean paste and its suppression of the cell proliferation. The effects of soybean extracts were lower than those of soybean paste extracts. The effects might be enhanced by the fermentation of soybeans. The results of this work indicate that extracts from soybeans and Korean soybean paste could have potential as anti-tumor substances.
This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, the Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. was extracted with methanol at room temperatures, and fractionation of the methanol extracts from Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and methanol respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. extracts was determined using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The petroleum ether extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The synergistic effect has been found in combined extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. and Perillae folium as compared to each extracts alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curve was determined using ethyl acetate extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. against Bacillus Cereus and Salmonella Enteritidis. The petroleum ether extract of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. showed strong antimicrobial activity against Bacillus Cereus at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. The 4,000 ppm of petroleum ether extract from Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. retarded the growth of Bacillus Cereus more than 24 hours and Salmonella Enteritidis up to 36 hours. The petroleum ether extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. has been shown the antimicrobial effect against Bacillus Cereus and Salmonella Enteritidis. (Korean J Nutrition 38(2): 112~116, 2005)
The inhibitory activity of Lactobacillus plantarum Lp2 isolated from Kimchi was investigated against E. colz, Staphylococcus aureus, Str. faecalis, P. aeruginosa and psycrotrophic strain Pcl. The addition of ether extract from Lp2 culture broth completely inhibited the growth of E, coli, P. aeruginosa and Pc1, but the inhibitory action was weak against S. aureus and Str. faecalis. The inhibitory substance(s), soluble in methanol, acetone and ethyl ether, was active in the pH range of 5 and 6, but the activity was lost above pH 6. The activity was retained after heating at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. By dialysis, the molecular weight of the inhibitory substancek) was estimated under 1000. The TLC analysis of Lp2 ether extract revealed the presence of three bands and the inhibitory activity was found in that of $R_f$ value 0.73.

Antifungal activity of ether and ethylacetate extract from Xanthium strumarium L. were tested against 11 plant pathogens by agar diffusion method. Antifungal activity of the ether and ethylacetate extract showed strong antifungal activity against plant pathogenous fungi, i.e. Phytophthora capsici, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Aspergillus niger. The $IC_{50}$ of the ether extract against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum was determined $335{\mu}g/ml$ Antifungal activity of the ether extract from Xanthium strumarium L. showed Rf value=0.87 on TLC plate.
This study was performed to determine the effects of antimutagenicity from Barley (Hordeum vulgare). In Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay (In vitro test), the extract of Barley (Hordeum vulgare) inhibited mutagenic activity of 4-NQO and Trp-p-1 with 59 mix. in Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100. In Micronucleus test (In vivo test), the methanol extract of Barley (Hordeum vulgare) inhibited micronucleus formation in bone marrow by cyclophosphamide. The $\beta$-glucan of Barley (Hordeum vulgare) showed inhibitory effects of 59-77% in mutagenic activity of 4-NQO by Salmonella typhimurium TA100. The mutagenicity of Trp-p-1 with S9 mix. by Salmonella typhimurium TA98 showed inhibitory effects of 24-56%. The methanl extract (M) was fractionated with ether (MI), ethylacetate (M2), buthanol (M3) and water (M4). The Antimutagenicity of Trp-p-1 with 59 mix. by Salmonella typhimurium TA98 in Barley fraction showed the following: methanol extract (99.58%)>ether fraction (98.05%)>buthanol fraction (56.90%)>water fraction (56.72%)>ethyl acetate fraction (28.72%). Among them, ether fraction in TA 98 showed strong antimutagenicity effects (85.56%, 98.05%) against mutation induced by 4-NQO and Trp-p-1. As concentration of the methanol extract increased (1.25~5 g/kg/10 cc), micronucleus formation in bone marrow by chemical mutagen (CP) showed inhibitory effects of 50% (p< 0.05).
Component having antioxidant activity on lard during heating was separated from hexane extract of spinach, and its characteristic chemical structure was speculated through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry. Lard was heated with hexane-, ethyl ether-, ethyl acetate-, or ethanol extract of spinach at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 hr. Hexane extract of spinach, having highest antioxidant activity on lard during heating, was fractionated by silicic acid column chromatography (SACC), and SACC fractions having higher antioxidant activity on lard during heating were further separated by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Isolated compound from SACC fractions of hexane extract of spinach by TLC had sugar moieties and benzene ring along with hydroxy, carbonyl, and alkyl groups in the structure.
The antioxidant activity of the solvent fractions extracted from onion skin was examined. The antioxidant activity of methanol extract at the cencentration of 0.02% and 0.03% was stronger than that of mixed tocopherol. The antioxidant activity of the fractions of methanol extract increased in the order of butanol> ethyl acetate> ethyl ether> water fraction. The antioxidant activity of each fractions was strongly related with total phenol content and HDA. Further separation of butanol fraction by TLC yielded 6 fluorescent bands with Rf values of 0.20, 0.33, 0.49, 0.60 and 0.94. The total phenol content and HDA of fluorescent band, Rf 0.96, were remarkable higher than those of the other band and exhibited a strong UV absorption at 255 nm and 317 nm, which would be specifically produced by flavonol. Spectral analyses indicated that the major antioxidant component was quercetin aglycone (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone).
To investigate the cytotoxic effect of Platycodon grandiflorum DC, petroleum ether extract of Platycodon grandiflorum DC was partially purified by a silica gel column chromatography. Among several fractions, fraction D which was obtained under the elution with a 7:3 mixture of petroleum ether and ethyl ether, showed patent cytotoxicity against mouse leukemia cell line (L1210), human rectum cancer cell line (HRT-18) and human colon cancer cell lint (HCT-48).
