Feasibility study of using triple-energy CT images for improving stopping power estimation

  • The planning accuracy of charged particle therapy (CPT) is subject to the accuracy of stopping power (SP) estimation. In this study, we propose a method of deriving a pseudo-triple-energy CT (pTECT) that can be achievable in the existing dual-energy CT (DECT) systems for better SP estimation. In order to remove the direct effect of errors in CT values, relative CT values according to three scanning voltage settings were used. CT values of each tissue substitute phantom were measured to show the non-linearity of the values thereby suggesting the absolute difference and ratio of CT values as parameters for SP estimation. Electron density, effective atomic number (EAN), mean excitation energy and SP were calculated based on these parameters. Two of conventional methods were implemented and compared to the proposed pTECT method in terms of residuals, absolute error and root-mean-square-error (RMSE). The proposed method outperformed the comparison methods in every evaluation metrics. Especially, the estimation error for EAN and mean excitation using pTECT were converging to zero. In this proof-of-concept study, we showed the feasibility of using three CT values for accurate SP estimation. Our suggested pTECT method indicates potential clinical utility of spectral CT imaging for CPT planning.

고속 프랙탈 영상 부호화를 위한 개선한 초기 영상 추정법 (Improved Initial Image Estimation Method for a Fast Fractal Image Decoding)

  • In this paper, we propose the improved initial image estimation method for a fast fractal image decoding. When the correlation between a domain and a range is given as the linear equation, the value of initial image estimation using the conventional method is the intersection between its linear equation and y=x. If the gradient of linear equation is large, that the difference of the value between each adjacent pixels is large, the conventional method has disadvantage which has the impossibility of exact estimation. The method of the proposed initial image estimation performs well by two steps. he first step can improve the disadvantage of the conventional method. The second step upgrades the range value which was found previous step by referring information of its domain. Though the computational complexity for the initial image estimation increses slightly, the total computational complexity decreases by 30% than that of the conventional method because of diminishing in the number of iterations.

  • The boundary estimation problem is used to estimate the shape of organic depend on the phase of the cardiac cycle or interested in the detection of the location and size of anomalies with resistivity values different from the background tissues such as nuclear reactor. And we can use the method to solve the optimal solution such as modified Newton raphson, kalman filter, extended kalman filter, etc. But, this method consumes much time and is sensitive to the initial value and noise in the estimation of the unknown shape. In the paper, we propose that multi-layer neural networks estimate the boundary of the unknown object using Fourier coefficient. This method can be used at the real time estimation and have strong characteristics at the noise and initial value. It uses voltage change; difference the homogeneous voltage to the non-homogeneous voltage, and change of Fourier coefficient change to train multi-layer neural network. After train, we can have real time estimation using this method.

Verification of Two Least-Squares Methods for Estimating Center of Rotation Using Optical Marker Trajectory

  • An accurate and robust estimation of center of rotation (CoR) using optical marker trajectory is crucial in human biomechanics. In this regard, the performances of the two prevailing least-squares methods, the Gamage and Lasenby (GL) method, and the Chang and Pollard (CP) method, are verified in this paper. While both methods are sphere-fitting approaches in closed form and require no tuning parameters, they have not been thoroughly verified by comparison of their estimation accuracies. Furthermore, while for both methods, results for stationary CoR locations are presented, cases for perturbed CoR locations have not been investigated for any of them. In this paper, the estimation performances of the GL method and CP method are investigated by varying the range of motion (RoM) and noise amount, for both stationary and perturbed CoR locations. The difference in the estimation performance according to the variation in the amount of noise and RoM was clearly shown for both methods. However, the CP method outperformed the GL method, as seen in results from both the simulated and the experimental data. Particularly, when the RoM is small, the GL method failed to estimate the appropriate CoR while the CP method reasonably maintained the accuracy. In addition, the CP method showed a considerably better predictability in CoR estimation for the perturbed CoR location data than the GL method. Accordingly, it may be concluded that the CP method is more suitable than the GL method for CoR estimation when RoM is limited and CoR location is perturbed.

Accuracy Assessment of Topographic Volume Estimation Using Kompsat-3 and 3-A Stereo Data

  • The topographic volume estimation is carried out for the earth work of a construction site and quarry excavation monitoring. The topographic surveying using instruments such as engineering levels, total stations, and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) receivers have traditionally been used and the photogrammetric approach using drone systems has recently been introduced. However, these methods cannot be adopted for inaccessible areas where high resolution satellite images can be an alternative. We carried out experiments using Kompsat-3/3A data to estimate topographic volume for a quarry and checked the accuracy. We generated DEMs (Digital Elevation Model) using newly acquired Kompsat-3/3A data and checked the accuracy of the topographic volume estimation by comparing them to a reference DEM generated by timely operating a drone system. The experimental results showed that geometric differences between stereo images significantly lower the quality of the volume estimation. The tested Kompsat-3 data showed one meter level of elevation accuracy with the volume estimation error less than 1% while the tested Kompsat-3A data showed lower results because of the large geometric difference.

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest IDE (Incremental Displacement Estimation) algorithm for the previously proposed visually servoed paired structured light system. The system is composed of two sides facing with each other, each with one or two lasers with a 2-DOF manipulator, a camera, and a screen. The 6-DOF displacement between two sides can be estimated by calculating the positions of the projected laser beams and rotation angles of the manipulators. In the previous study, Newton-Raphson or EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) has been used as an estimation algorithm. Although the various experimental tests have validated the performance of the system and estimation algorithms, the computation time is relatively long since aforementioned algorithms are iterative methods. Therefore, in this paper, a non-iterative incremental displacement estimation algorithm which updates the previously estimated displacement with a difference of the previous and the current observed data is introduced. To verify the performance of the algorithm, experimental tests have been performed. The results show that the proposed non-iterative algorithm estimates the displacement with the same level of accuracy compared to the EKF with multiple iterations with significantly less computation time.

논에서 일주기 수질조사시 채수빈도가 오염부하량 산정에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Sampling Frequency During Storm Period on Estimation of Pollutant Load from Paddy Field)

  • In order to examine effects of sampling frequency during rainfall-runoff process from paddy field on the estimation of pollution load, EMCs of several water sampling frequencies were examined. It was found that the difference of EMCs between one time sampling and two hours consecutive sampling during storm event showed $34.1{\sim}-19.1%$ for T-N, $55.4{\sim}-27.3%$ for T-P, $68.5{\sim}-41.0%$ for the SS, respectively. Five times sampling reduced difference of EMCs compared to those two hours interval sampling to $15.2{\sim}-15.2%$ for T-N, $20.0{\sim}-26.2%$ for T-P, $28.6{\sim}-35.7%$ for the SS, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the depth of carbonation considering the relative humidity in concrete using the FEM model. The difference of relative humidity in concrete has not been considered in calculating the carbonation depth in analytic model. That reason can make the over estimation in expectation of RC structure durability. The temperature and R.H. expectation model and the carbonation depth expectation model are development in past author's studies. The two models are coupled in this study. The fact that there is the difference between actual environment and acceleration test is revealed from FEM numerical analysis.

  • Since the input data such as types and quantities of materials cannot be acquired during the planning and designing phases, it is difficult to estimate the carbon emissions from the construction phase. As the materials are closely related to the building usages, an approximate estimation by the usages can be suggested. However, before confirming the estimation, the difference test among the carbon emissions of the building usages should be implemented. This study executed t-test or Mann-Whitney test between apartments and schools. The result of the study statistically verified the significant difference between the carbon emissions of apartments and schools.

구간추정법을 이용한 교통수요추정 (An Interval Travel Demand Estimation Method)

  • 장래교통수요에 대한 예측은 기본적으로 4단계 수요추정방법을 통해 이루어지지만, 각 단계마다의 변화가 최종수요예측 결과에 미치는 영향에 대해서는 고려되지 못하고 있다. 즉, 장래에 대한 예측이 많은 변동성을 내포하고 있음에도 수요예측분석과정은 점 추정치(point-estimation)의 값을 입력자료로 분석하여 최종결과물 또한 점추정값으로 제시하고 있어 교통수요의 가변성 및 탄력성을 반영하지 못하고 있다. 하지만 교통 상황이 급속히 변화는 우리나라의 현실을 볼 때 교통수요가 갖고 있는 가변성과 탄력성을 반영하여 결과를 분석할 수 있는 구간추정방식(Interval-estimation)의 방법론에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 장래교통수요 예측 과정의 가장 초기단계인 통행발생단계의 회귀분석모형 적용시 구간추정방식을 적용하여 상한값과 하한값을 함께 산출하였다. 상한값과 하한값에 의한 발생 도착량에 대해 4단계 교통모형을 적용하여 발생량-도착량에 대한 Balancing, 통행분포, 통행배정의 4단계과정을 적용하였고 수요분석 각 단계에서의 도출된 결과에 대해 비교하였다. 최종적으로, 통행배정 된 교통량의 변화비율을 링크특성과 함께 비교분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 수요분석 시 입력 자료의 불확실성이 가져오는 영향을 파악하였으며 신뢰구간에 의한 결과를 비교분석함으로써 수요추정의 가변성이 미치는 영향을 평가하였다. 또한 수요분석의 가변성에 따른 링크교통량의 탄력성을 평가할 수 있는 방법을 제시함으로써 교통수요 추정시 분석방법의 가변성 및 탄력성을 고려할 수 있다고 판단된다.
