  • A 90-nm CMOS motion estimation (ME) processor was developed by employing dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) to greatly reduce the dynamic power. To make full use of the advantages of DVFS, a fast ME algorithm and a small on-chip DC/DC converter were also developed. The fast ME algorithm can adaptively predict the optimum supply voltage ($V_D$) and the optimum clock frequency ($f_c$) before each block matching process starts. Power dissipation of the ME processor, which contained an absolute difference accumulator as well as the on-chip DC/DC converter and DVFS controller, was reduced to $31.5{\mu}W$, which was only 2.8% that of a conventional ME processor.

  • Inverse radiation problems were solved for estimating boundary temperature distribution in a way of function estimation approach in an axisymmetric absorbing, emitting and scattering medium, given the measured radiative data. In order to reduce the computational time fur the calculation of sensitivity matrix, automatic differentiation and Broyden combined method were adopted, and their computational precision and efficiency were compared with the result obtained by finite difference approximation.. In inverse analysis, the effects of the precision of sensitivity matrix, the number of measurement points and measurement error on the estimation accuracy had been inspected using quasi-Newton method as an inverse method. Inverse solutions were validated with the result acquired by additional inverse methods of conjugate-gradient method or Levenberg-Marquardt method.

  • According to the PDE scheme, it is desirable to make the value of SAD to be rapidly increased in motion estimation. In this paper, we propose a new block matching algorithm based on the combination of a new scan and search order. In the proposed scan order, a current block is divided by the frequency that is estimated by summing the difference between the mean and the values of the pixels. And then the calculation of SAD is performed from the highest frequency area. In the proposed search order based on DC difference between the current and the candidate block, candidate blocks with low DC are early checked in motion estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves about 6% computational gain compared with the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, I suggest several techniques to estimate covariance matrix and compare the performance of the global minimum variance portfolio (GMVP) in terms of out of sample mean standard deviation and return. As a result, the return differences among the GMVPs are insignificant. The mean standard deviation of the GMVP using historical covariance is sensitive to the estimation window and the number of assets in the portfolio. Among the model covariance, the GMVP using constant systematic risk ratio model or using short sale restriction shows the best performance. The performance difference between the GMVPs using historical covariance and model covariance becomes insignificant as the historical covariance is estimated with longer estimation window. Lastly, the implied volatilities from ELW prices do not lead to superior performance to the historical variance.

  • This paper introduces a new fast motion estimation based on estimating a block matching error (i.e., sum of absolute difference (SAD)) between blocks which can eliminate an impossible candidate block much earlier than a conventional partial distortion elimination (PDE) scheme. The basic idea of the proposed scheme is based on predicting the total SAD of a candidate block using its partial SAD. In particular, in order to improve prediction accuracy and computational efficiency, a sub-sample based block matching and a selective pixel-based approaches are employed. In order to evaluate the proposed scheme, several baseline approaches are described and compared. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the computations by about 44% for motion estimation at the cost of 0.0005 dB quality degradation versus the general PDE algorithm.

  • This paper presents the motion estimation algorithm on real-time for mobile surveillance robot using particle filter. the particle filter that based on the monte carlo's sampling method, use bayesian conditional probability model which having prior distribution probability and posterior distribution probability. However, the initial probability density was set to define randomly in the most of particle filter. In this paper, we find first the initial probability density using Sum of Absolute Difference(SAD). and we applied it in the partical filter. In result, more robust real-time estimation and tracking system on the randomly moving object was realized in the mobile surveillance robot environments.

  • The adaptive coding schemes in H.264 standardization provide a significant ceding efficiency and some additional features like error resilience and network friendliness. The variable block size motion compensation using multiple reference frames is one of the key H.264 coding elements to provide main performance gain, but also the main culprit that increases the overall computational complexity. For this reason, this paper proposes a selective motion estimation algorithm based on variable block size for fast motion estimation in H.264. After we find the SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) at initial points using diamond search, we decide whether to perform additional motion search in each block. Simulation results show that the proposed method is five times faster than the conventional full search in case of search range $\pm$32.

  • Reheating furnace is an essential facility of a rod mill plant where a billet is heated to the required rolling temperature so that it can be milled to produce wire. Although it is very important to obtain information on billet temperatures, it is not feasible during furnace operation. Consequently, a billet temperature profile should be estimated. Moreover, this estimation should be done within an appropriate time interval for an on-line application. In this paper, a billet heat transfer model based on 2D FEM(Finite Element Method) with spatially distributed emission factors is proposed for an on-line billet temperature estimation and also a measurement is carried out for two extremely different furnace operation patterns. Finally, the difference between the model outputs and the measurements is minimized by using a new optimization algorithm named uDEAS(Univariate Dynamic Encoding Algorithm for Searches) with multi-step tuning strategy. The obtained emission factors are applied to a simulation for the data which are not used in the model tuning for validation.

  • This paper analyzes that the global positioning system (GPS) receiver differential code bias (DCB) has effect on the estimation the ionosphere total electron content (TEC). The data from nine permanent GPS sites of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) were used for the estimation of the receiver DCB before (Trimble 4000 SSi) and after (Trimble NetRS) the receiver replacement, using the singular value decomposition method. The results showed that the estimated mean value of the receiver DCB varied from 0.11 ns (nanosecond) to 7.54 ns before the receiver replacement, but the receiver DCBs shoed large values than 20 ns except some stations after the replacement. The receiver DCB showed a relatively large difference by types of the receivers, and, as a result, it had a great effect on the estimation the ionosphere TEC using GPS.

  • This paper invetigates estimation methods of mapping parameters in object-oriented coding. In this paper, we propose a fast parameter estimation method with its performance similar to that of the conventional methods. We employ hierarchical structure in difference images to redcue the computational complexity and also combine conventional six- and eight-mapping parameter estimation methods to compensate for the performance degradation caused by employment of hierarchical structure. Computer simulation shows that the proposed mehtod gives results similar to conventional methods with greatly reduced computational complexity.
