A hybrid genetic algorithm is developed for estimating the wall emissivities for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media in a two-dimensional irregular geometry with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries by minimizing an objective function, which is expressed by the sum of square errors between estimated and measured temperatures at only four data positions. The finite-volume method was employed to solve the radiative transfer equation for a two-dimensional irregular geometry. The results show that a developed hybrid genetic algorithms reduce the effect of genetic parameters on the performance of genetic algorithm and that the wall emissivities are estimated accurately without measurement errors.

CF8M cast austenitic stainless steel is used for several components such as primary coolant piping, elbow, pump casing, and valve bodies in light water reactors. These components are subject to thermal aging at the reactor operating temperature. Thermal aging results in spinodal decomposition of the delta-ferrite leading to increased strength and decreased toughness. In this study, three kinds of the aged CF8M specimen were prepared using an artificially simulated aging method. The objective of this study is to summarize the method of estimating ferrite contents, Charpy impact energy and J-R curve, and to evaluate the thermal embrittlement of the CF8M cast austenitic stainless steel piping used in the domestic nuclear power plants.
This study was intended to estimate the soil runoff at the basin of Mandaechun where the measure needs to be taken to deal with the increasing muddy water resulting from soil runoff during wet season and torrential rain at the high reaches of the Soyang lake where highland vegetables are cultivated and soil replacement for improvement is carried out every two to three years. The study was carried out in such a way of identifying the topographic factors using geographical spatial data from Water Management Information System (WAMIS) and ARC-VIEW program and estimating the soil runoff by rainfall frequency using Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), and furthermore, evaluating the soil runoff contribution at the basin of Mandaechun based on estimate of the soil runoff by section.

In deterministic design of feedback controllers for uncertain dynamic systems, the upper bound of the uncertainty is very important to guarantee the stability of the closed loop system. In this paper, we assume that the upper bound of the uncertainty is formulated using a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind, that is, an integral of the product of a predefined kernel with an unknown influence function. We propose an adaptation law that is capable of estimating this upper bound. Using this adaptive upper bound, we design an adaptive variable structure control (AVSC), which guarantees asymptotic stability/ultimate boundedness of uncertain dynamic systems. The illustrative example shows the proposed AVSC is effective for uncertain dynamic systems.

The aim of the work is to present a new method of estimating the existence of a mass unbalance and mass unbalance under a crack on a rotating shaft. This is an advanced new method for the detection of a mass unbalance and a new way to estimate the position of it under crack influence. As the first step, the shaft is physically modelled with a finite element method and the dynamic mathematical model is derived by using the Hamilton principle; thus, the system is represented by various subsystems. The equation of motion of the shaft with a mass unbalance and a crack are established by adapting the local mass unbalance and the stiffness change. this is a reference system for the given system. Based on a model for transient behavior induced from vabrations measured at the bearings, an elementary Estimator is designed to detect mass unblance on the shaft. Using the Estimator, a bank of the Estimator is established to estimate the estimate the position of the mass unbalance and arranged at a certain location on the shaft. The informations for the given system are the measurements of bearing displacements and velocity.
It is significantly important problem in computer what is estimating 3D information from 2D images. However, most of the related works have been interested in the analysis of the changes of 2D image, so that, they need much time to solve the complex equation and expensive device. In this paper, we first actively project the pattern of the sinusoidal wave into the object. Then, we measure the change of the phase from the distortion occurring according to the shape of the object, and we use the change of the phase in order to estimate the depth information. This is our proposal.
In enumerating salmon spawning population by the tag-recovery method, the error caused by the emigration of the tagged fish into the non-statistical area and the misjudgement of the tagged fish as untagged, which is caused by bear predation, appear to give a bias to the estimate of population size. Efforts were made in the present study to remove such bias by estimating population size under certain assumtion and by introducing a correction equation for the sample tag-ratios.

Efforts for better understanding of the interaction between groundwater recharge and thermal regime of the subsurface medium is gaining momentum for its diverse applications in water resources. A numerical model is developed to simulate temperature variations of the subsurface under time varying groundwater recharge. The model utilizes MacCormack scheme for finite difference approximation of the partial differential equation describing the conductive and advective heat transport. For the estimation of recharge rate, optimization of the model is realized by searching for the unknown parameters which minimize the root-mean-square error between simulated and measured temperatures. Simulation results for 22-year time series data of temperature measurements reveal that the proposed model can accurately simulate subsurface temperature variations resulting from the redistribution of the heat due to the movement of water and it can also estimate temporal variations of recharge. Seasonal variations of recharge and a linear relationship between precipitation and recharge are clearly reflected in the simulated results.
This paper investigates prediction models estimating the hydration properties of concrete, such as the compressive strength, the splitting tensile strength, the elastic modulus, and the autogenous shrinkage. A prediction model is suggested on the basis of an equation that is formulated to predict the compressive strength. Based on the assumption that the apparent activation energy is a characteristic property of concrete, a prediction model for the compressive strength is applied to hydration-related properties. The hydration properties predicted by the model are compared with experimental results, and it is concluded that the prediction model properly estimates the splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, and autogenous shrinkage as well as the compressive strength of concrete.

We investigated molecular polarity by using theoretical means and comparing empirical solvent polarity. Our approach employed electrostatic potentials at the molecular surface calculated by density functional methods. A number of molecular descriptors related to molecular polarities were computed from molecular surface electrostatic potentials. Among computed molecular descriptors, the most positive electrostatic potential provided the best correlation with the empirical solvent polarities. A regression equation was developed in order to predict molecular polarities of molecules whose experimental solvent polarities were unknown. The new regression equations were utilized in estimating solvent polarities of cubane derivatives which are considered important precusors of high-energy density meterials.
