Error control and concealment in video communication is becoming increasingly important because transmission errors can cause single or multiple loss of macroblocks in video delivery over unreliable channels such as wireless networks and the internet. This paper describes a temporal error concealment by postprocessing. Lost image blocks are overlapped block motion compensated (OBMC) using median of motion vectors from adjacent blocks at the decoder. The results show a significant improvement over zero motion error concealment and other temporal concealment methods such as Motion Vector Rational Interpolation or Side Match Criterion OBMC by 1.4 to 3.5㏈ gain in PSNR. We present experimental results showing improvements in PSNR and computational complexity.
Cloud computing emerges as a new computing paradigm which targets reliable and customizable services. The term builds on decades of research in virtual machine, distributed and parallel computing, utility computing, and more recently networking, web service, and software as a service. In this paper, we provide a seamless connection migration of web services. This is useful for cloud computing environment in which many client terminals have mobility. With the wireless internet facility, those mobile users can move place to place during internet communication. Therefore, we provide solutions to the two major problems in current virtualization based migration: communication failure problems and connection re-establishment. Communication channel flushing by zero window notification helps to resolve the communication failure problems and TCP port inheritance prevents connection re-establishment errors during socket reconstruction. Thus, our web service migration facility is now able to preserve open network connections, and even for server sockets. This is a highly transparent approach, in that we did not Introduce additional messages for channel flushing and did not make any modification to the TCP protocol stack. Experimental results show that the overhead due to connection migration of web services is almost negligible when compared with time to take the conventional web service migration.
Electron bombardment to silicate glass during electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) causes outward migration of Na from the excitation volume and subsequent decrease in the measured X-ray count rates of Na. To acquire precise Na2O content of silicate glass, one should use proper analytical technique to avoid or minimize Na migration effect or should correct for decreases in the measured Na X-ray counts. In this study, we analyzed 8 silicate glass standard samples using automated Time Dependent Intensity (TDI) correction method of Probe for EPMA software that can calculate zero-time intercept by extrapolating X-ray count changes over analysis time. We evaluated an accuracy of TDI correction for Na measurements of silicate glasses with EPMA at 15 kV acceleration voltage and 20 nA probe current electron beam, which is commonly utilized analytical condition for geological samples. Results show that Na loss can be avoided with 20 ㎛-sized large beam (<0.1 nA/㎛2), thus silicate glasses can be analyzed without TDI correction. When the beam size is smaller than 10 ㎛, Na loss results in large relative errors up to -55% of Na2O values without correction. By applying TDI corrections, we can acquire Na2O values close to the reference values with relative errors of ~ ±10%. Use of weighted linear-fit can reduce relative errors down to ±6%. Thus, quantitative analysis of silicate glasses with EPMA is required for TDI correction for alkali elements such as Na and K.
The Deep Lens Survey (DLS), a precursor to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), is a 20 deg2 survey carried out with NOAO's Blanco and Mayalltelescopes. DLS is unique in its depth reaching down to ~27th mags in BVRz bands. This enables a broad redshift baseline and is optimal for investigating cosmological evolution of the large scale structure. Galaxy-galaxylensing is a powerful tool to estimate averaged matter distribution around lensgalaxies by measuring shape distortions of background galaxies. The signal from galaxy-galaxy lensing is sensitive not only to galaxy halo properties, but also to cosmological environment at large scales. In this study, we measure galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering, which together put strong constraints on the cosmological parameters. We obtain significant galaxy-galaxy lensing signals out to ~20 Mpc while tightly controlling systematics. The B-mode signals are consistent with zero. Our lens-source flip test indicates that minimal systematic errors are present in DLS photometric redshifts. Shear calibration is performed using high-fidelity galaxy image simulations. We demonstrate that the overall shape of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal is well described by the halo model comprised of central and non-central halo contributions. Finally, we present our preliminary constraints on the matter density and the normalization parameters.
INS(inertial navigation system) aligns itself using gravity and Earth's rotational rate from accelerometers and gyro sensors when stationary. Typically, ZUPT(zero velocity update), which is based on a linear error model Kalman filter, is used when it is stationary. However, such algorithms assume stationary conditions, leading to increased alignment errors or filter divergence during maritime mooring due to wave-induced motion. This paper designs a mooring alignment algorithm for maritime platforms using a Kalman filter, which uses large heading angle error model and an initial position correction technique. And it is validated by simulation. Furthermore, it is confirmed that applying this to a rotational INS dramatically improves performance through the principle of bias cancellation.

The purpose of this study is to figure out the perceptional characteristics of mathematically gifted elementary students by comparing the mathematical reasoning ability and errors between mathematically gifted elementary students and non-gifted students. This research has been targeted at 63 gifted students from 5 elementary schools and 63 non-gifted students from 4 elementary schools. The result of this research is as follows. First, mathematically gifted elementary students have higher inductive reasoning ability compared to non-gifted students. Mathematically gifted elementary students collected proper, accurate, systematic data. Second, mathematically gifted elementary students have higher inductive analogical ability compared to non-gifted students. Mathematically gifted elementary students figure out structural similarity and background better than non-gifted students. Third, mathematically gifted elementary students have higher deductive reasoning ability compared to non-gifted students. Zero error ratio was significantly low for both mathematically gifted elementary students and non-gifted students in deductive reasoning, however, mathematically gifted elementary students presented more general and appropriate data compared to non-gifted students and less reasoning step was achieved. Also, thinking process was well delivered compared to non-gifted students. Fourth, mathematically gifted elementary students committed fewer errors in comparison with non-gifted students. Both mathematically gifted elementary students and non-gifted students made the most mistakes in solving process, however, the number of the errors was less in mathematically gifted elementary students.
FTA (fault tree analysis), an analytical method for system failure management, was employed in the management of faults in running PCR analysis. PCR is executed through several processes, in which the process of PCR machine operation was selected for the analysis by FTA. The reason for choosing the simplest process in the PCR analysis was to adopt it as a first trial to test a feasibility of the FTA approach. First, fault events-top event, intermediate event, basic events-were identified by survey on expert knowledge of PCR. Then those events were correlated deductively to build a fault tree in hierarchical structure. The fault tree was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively, yielding minimal cut sets, structural importance, common cause vulnerability, simulation of probability of occurrence of top event, cut set importance, item importance and sensitivity. The top event was 'errors in the step of PCR machine operation in running PCR analysis'. The major intermediate events were 'failures in instrument' and 'errors in actions in experiment'. The basic events were four events, one event and one event based on human errors, instrument failure and energy source failure, respectively. Those events were combined with Boolean logic gates-AND or OR, constructing a fault tree. In the qualitative evaluation of the tree, the basic events-'errors in preparing the reaction mixture', 'errors in setting temperature and time of PCR machine', 'failure of electrical power during running PCR machine', 'errors in selecting adequate PCR machine'-proved the most critical in the occurrence of the fault of the top event. In the quantitative evaluation, the list of the critical events were not the same as that from the qualitative evaluation. It was because the probability value of PCR machine failure, not on the list above though, increased with used time, and the probability of the events of electricity failure and defective of PCR machine were given zero due to rare likelihood of the events in general. It was concluded that this feasibility study is worth being a means to introduce the novel technique, FTA, to the management of faults in running PCR analysis.
The goal of this study is to recommend a new type of stage-discharge rating curve ($Q=p(h-e)^{\beta}-{\gamma}$) useful for satisfying divergence, and one other seemingly irresolvable problem related to exited rating curves, while also extending this rating curve model. The problem of divergence is that during the finding of the CZF (cease-to-zero flow) parameter e and while minimizing the sum of total errors of the estimated curve, the exponential parameter ${\beta}$ become an abnormally large value. The insoluble problem is that when the value e is greater then the recorded minimum at the gauged stage, it is impossible to have a negative logarithm value (h-e). The two problems above can be satisfied by adapting the control value ${\gamma}$, which affects the reduction of ${\gamma}$ and gives us the possibility of controlling (h-e) over zero. The study results show that the effects of parameter ${\gamma}$ are very similar to that of e when conducting physical and sensitivity analyses. This system can be used towards developing a new stage-discharge rating curve for river discharge, for use in evaluating the acceptability of existing stage-discharge rating curves generated by using hydrologic analyses at all stations.
The Average Coordinate Referenee System (ACRS) method is developed to reduce experimental errors in human locomotion analysis. Experimentally measured kinematic data is used to conduct analysis in human modeling, and the model accuracy is directly related to the accuracy of the data. However. the accuracy is questionable due to skin movement. deformation of skeletal structure while in motion and limitations of commercial motion analysis system . In this study. the ACRS method is applied to an optically-tracked segment marker system. although it can be applied to many of the others as well. In the ACRS method, each marker can be treated independently. as the origin of a local coordinate system for its body segment. Errors, inherent in the experimental process. result in different values for the recovered Euler angles at each origin. By employing knowledge of an initial, calibrated segment reference frame, the Euler angles at each marker location can be averaged. minimizing the effect of the skin extension and rotation. Using the developed ACRS methodology the error is reduced when compared to the general Euler angle method commonly applied in motion analysis. If there is no error exist in the experimental gait data. the separation and Penetration distance of the femoraltibial joint using absolute coordinate system is supposed to be zero during one gait cycle. The separation and Penetration distance was ranged up to 18 mm using general Euler angle method and 12 mm using the developed ACRS.

Tidal computations of $M_2,\;S_2,\; K_1$ and $O_1$ constituents in the northeast Asian sea are presented by blending the Topex/Poseidon (T/P) altimeter data into a hydrodynamic model with $5'{\times}5'$ resolution. A series of sensitivity experiments on a weighting factor, which is the control parameter in the blending method, are carried out using $M_2$ constituent. The weighting factor is set to be in inverse proportion to the square root of water depth to reduce noises which could occur in data-assimilative model by blending T/P data. Model results obtained by blending the T/P-derived $M_2,\;S_2,\; K_1$ and $O_1$ constituents simultaneously are compared with all T/P-track tidal data; Average values of amplitude and phase errors are close to zero. Standard deviations of amplitude and phase errors are approximately 2 cm and less than 10 degrees respectively. The data-assimilative model results show a quite good agreement with T/P-derived tidal data, particularly in shallow water region (h<250m). In deep water regions, T/P-derived tidal data show unreasonable spatial variations in amplitude and phase. The data-assimilative model results differ from T/P-derived data, but are improved to show reasonable spatial variations in amplitude and phase. In addition, the T/P-blended model results are in good agreement with coastal tide gauge data which are not blended into the model.
