  • This paper presents a methodology for identifying track irregularity using a wavelet transfer function. An equivalent wavelet SISO (single-input single-output) transfer function is defined by the measured track geometry and the acceleration data measured at a bogie of a train. All the measured data with various sampling frequencies were rearranged according to the constant 25cm reference recording distance of the track recording vehicle used in the field. Before applying the wavelet transform, measured data were regressed by eliminating those out of the range. The inverse wavelet transfer function is also formulated to estimate track geometry. The closeness of the estimated track geometry to the actual one is evaluated by the coherence function and also by FRF (frequency response function). A track irregularity index is defined by comparing the variance of the estimation error from the intact condition and that from the current condition. A simulation study has been carried out to examine the proposed algorithm.

  • Streamer resistivity surveys in shallow marine environments were carried out to analyze sediment characteristics at the bottom of reservoir. Because the resistivity values of reservoir water are very low and those of sediment are relatively high, apparent resistivity values increase with depth. And it is necessary to eliminate the apparent resistivity data decreased highly when the number of separation increases. According to the repeated data processing, we proposed the resistivity ratio of upper-to-lower layer is $0.6{\sim}0.8$ because the RMS error of inversion leads to the minimum in these range. As a result of the inversion for two- and three-layer model, the inversion including water depth is proved to be more effective than conventional method.

  • In this paper, we report the results of a study on the design and fabrication of a light-guiding plate (LGP) using a hybrid light-emitting diode (LED) and sunlight source that can be applied to a photobioreactor. LGP patterns for the LED source were designed and engraved on an LGP, together with previously reported patterns for a sunlight source. A control system for the hybrid LGP was designed to maintain the output photon flux density (PFD) from the LGP at a constant value. When the target value of the output PFD was set to $70{\mu}E/(m^2{\cdot}s)$, the error range of the output PFD was found to be within ${\pm}2%$.

  • In order to improve the calculation speed of an integrating-sphere simulator based on a ray-tracing method, parallel processing with OpenMP directive was implemented into the simulator and the randomness of Monte Carlo method was guaranteed by utilizing a parallel random number generator. It was confirmed that simulation results obtained with more than $10^7$ rays showed good agreement with theoretical results within the error range of 0.5%, and that the calculation speed improved as the number of threads increased. Finally, the spatial response distribution functions of a real integrating sphere were simulated and compared with previous results.

  • With the synthetic standards, valuable metals $(Ta_2O_5, Nb_2O_5, TiO_2, SnO_2$, and $ZrO_2$) in the tin slags have been determined by the x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The powder sample and the standards are homogeneously mixed with anhydrous $Li_2B_4O_7$ and La_2O_3$ in weight ratio of 15 : 42 : 3 respectively. The mixed material is fused at $1,150^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes to be changed into the glass bead. The bead is ground to (-) 325 mesh size and pelletized. The analytical results obtained in this work are consistent with the data obtained by other common methods within allowable error range. The standard deviation for $Ta_2O_5$ in PTS-H sample is 0.12 % at level of 3.40 % content.

  • A novel alignment-free micro-optic MZI filter has been demonstrated. The filter is composed of two fiber-pigtailed collimators and a beam-splittingplate with a periodically etched stripe pattern. We fabricated the plate through a standard lithographic formulation process by using a pyrex substrate glass with SU-8 resist coating on its one of the surfaces. The maximum insertion loss of the implemented filter was less than 2 dB over 1000 nm to 1600 nm and the extinction ratio was larger than 33 dB. The measured PDL within the 3-dB pass band of the filter was less than 0.15dB and the maximum extinction ratio variation was less than 2 dB even when the worst alignment error occured.

  • Isotopic analyses of plutonium and low-enriched uranium mixtures with particle sizes of $0.6-3.3{\mu}m$ were performed using thermal ionization mass spectrometry with a continuous heating method to verify its effectiveness for the accurate analysis of minor isotopes without sample pretreatment. The mixed particles used in this study were prepared from a mixed solution of plutonium (SRM 947) and uranium (U010, $^{235}U$ 1% enriched) reference materials. The isotope ratios for plutonium in the individual mixed particles, including $^{238}Pu/^{239}Pu$, $^{241}Pu/^{239}Pu$ as well as $^{240}Pu/^{239}Pu$, and $^{242}Pu/^{239}Pu$, were in good agreement with the certified values despite the isobaric interference of $^{238}U$ and $^{241}Am$. The isotope ratios for uranium in the mixed particles also agreed well with the certified values within the range of error. However, the isotope ratios for minor isotopes, such as $^{234}U$ and $^{236}U$, in the particles with diameters of less than approximately $1.8{\mu}m$ could not be measured because numbers of $^{234}U$ and $^{236}U$ atoms in analyzed particles are too low. These results indicate that thermal ionization mass spectrometry with a continuous heating method is applicable for the analysis of trace amounts of plutonium isotopes, including $^{238}Pu$ and $^{241}Pu$, despite the presence of the respective isobars $^{238}U$ and $^{241}Am$ in the microsamples.

  • Duwon meteorite was fallen on 23 November 1943 in Duwonmyeon, Goheung, Jeolanam-Do. We measured rare earth element abundance of Duwon meteorite by isotope dilution thermal ion mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) and ICP-MS. As a result, except La and Ce, abundance of other rare earth element show a correspondence within 10% of error range. However, La and Ce show more than 70% in abundance, which is considered due to 1) experimental procedure or 2) inhomogeneity of sample. Leedey meteorite was fallen on 25 November 1943 in Dewey County, Oklahoma, USA. which suggested that fallen difference between Leedey and Duwon meteorites is only 2 days. Leedey and Duwon meteorites are classified as ordinary chondrite of L6 type. In Leedey chondrite-normalized REE pattern, Duwon meteorite shows nearly flattened, which suggests close relationship between Leedey and Duwon meteorites meteoritically or cosmochemically.

  • The Self Tuning Regulator(STR) method which is an approach of adaptive control theory, is ap-plied to design the fully automatic power controller of the nonlinear reactor model. The adaptive control represent a proper approach to design the suboptimal controller for nonlinear, time-varying stochastic systems. The control system is based on a thirdorder linear model with unknown, time-varying parameters. The updating of the parameter estimates is achieved by the recursive extended least square method with a variable forgetting factor. Based on the estimated parameters, the output (average coolant temperature) is predicted one-step ahead. And then, a weighted one-step ahead controller is designed so that the difference between the output and the desired output is minimized and the variation of the control rod position is small. Also, an integral action is added in order to remove the steadystate error. A nonlinear M plant model was used to simulate the proposed controller of reactor power which covers a wide operating range. From the simulation result, the performances of this controller for ramp input (increase or decrease) are proved to be successful. However, for step input this controller leaves something to be desired.

  • To enhance productivity and provide high quality production material in a GMA welding process, weld quality, productivity and cost reduction affects the number of process variables. In addition, a reliable welding process and conditions must be implemented to reduce weld structure failure. In various industries the welding process mathematical model is not fully formulated for the process parameter and on the welding conditions, therefore only partial variables can be predicted. The research investigates the interaction between the welding parameters (welding speed, distance between electrodes, and flow rate of shielding gas) and bead geometry for predicting the weld bead geometry (bead width, bead height). Taguchi techniques are applied to bead shape to develope curve equation for predicting the optimized process parameters and quality characteristics by analyzing the S/N ratio. The experimental results and measured error is within the range of 10% presenting satisfactory accuracy. The curve equation was developed in such a way that you can predict the bead geometry of constructed machinery that can be used for making tandem welding process.
