  • For permanent magnet brushless DC motors used for high speed fuel pumps, torque ripple is an important origin of vibration, acoustic noise and speed fluctuation. In this paper, the output torque profile of a PM motor with one phase energized is decomposed into the commutation torque, the reluctance torque and the armature reaction torque according to their source origins. It verifies that the output torque profile is qualitatively equivalent to the BEMF profile for low reluctance motors. This paper discusses the effect of magnet pole shaping and magnet arc length on the output torque and torque ripple. A magnet edge shaping is proposed to design a trapezoidal BEMF motor without torque ripple, with minimal sacrifice of the maximum output torque.

  • The finite element method is very flexible for new shapes and provides flux distribution, magnetomotive force, eddy currents, and torques. However, it requires lengthy computational time in order to achieve desired accuracy. The magnetic equivalent circuit method takes less computation time than the finite element method. Therefore, the finite element method is mainly used to confirm the completed design. The magnetic equivalent circuit method is convenient for complicated analysis of the transient state of the induction motor. The magnetic equivalent circuit method is restricted to only one direction of magnetic flux. In this paper, the construction elements (that is, stator iron, rotor iron, yoke, air gap, etc.) of the squirrel cage induction motor were represented by a flux tube and the air gap magnetomotive force was calculated by the magnetic equivalent circuit method. Starting transient torque and phase current of the squirrel cage induction motor were verified by the theoretical calculation and the experiment.

  • A simple method that estimates the torque fluctuations in induction motor driven by CSI under steady state condition is presented and that uses the phasor diagram from the modified singlephase equivalent circuit. This method is also applied to evaluate the PWM and programmed do link modulation techniques for reducing the torque pulsations. The simplified calculations are compared with the exact digital solutions from machine D-Q equation. It is noted that the torque pulsations in induction motor driven by CSI are dependent upon the load condition unlike VSI.

  • In general, a design method based on the equivalent magnetic circuit has been used for basic design of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM). However, the equivalent magnetic circuit method has difficulty in considering the arrangement of PM. IPMSM has high degree of freedom for PM rotor design. In this paper, we proposed the multiobjective optimal design method considering the arrangement of PM for the double-layer PM rotor structure that minimizes the torque ripple as well as maximizes the torque of IPMSM. The design variables of double-layer PM rotor structure are obtained from the Response Surface Method. Torque and torque ripple were calculated by Finite Element Method.

  • The torque converter, an important component of automatic transmissions, is a hydrodynamic device which has a great influence on transient characteristics of vehicle during shift. To predict the accurate driving performance in extremely transient state such as shifting process, a detailed analysis of the torque converter is required. In this study, one dimensional performance model of the torque converter based on the concept of mean flow path, was used to analyze the shifting transients and the exact values of equivalent parameters were determined from the experimental results by using BOX program. The dynamic modelings of the components of power transmission systems such as engines, planetary gear systems, clutches and one-way clutches, were carried out. To analyze the shifting transients of tracked vehicle, a simulation program was developed. In the modeling of power transmission systems, the stiffness of shafts was neglected and shifting control logic(TCU) was included. Using the developed simulation program, the driving conditions were simulated and the results of simulation were verified through the experiments on the dynamometer.

  • A Gerotor hydraulic motor is a planar mechanism consisting of a pair of rotors one of which encloses another rotor. The motion of the inner-rotor relative to the outer-rotor is produced by the pressure difference between the adjacent chambers. A design method of inner-rotor tooth profile using unit tangential vectors is presented in this work. Based on the relationships derived, the influence of the eccentricity of inner-rotor and the radius of circular arc tooth on the flow rate, torque and curvatures were investigated. It was shown that the flow rate and mean torque is proportional to eccentricity, but inversely proportional to the radius of circular arc teeth. Also, the maximum value of the equivalent curvature is increased as the eccentricity and the radius of circular arc teeth increased.

  • In this paper, the starting torque and efficiency characteristics of the induction motor (IM) for the electric vehicle (EV) are improved by changing the slot shapes of squirrel cage. The initial model of the induction motor is designed by the loading distribution method (LDM), and then the rotor with squirrel cage of NEMA class A is selected to optimize the slot shape by response surface method(RSM). The design variables of rotor slot shape are obtained by the RSM. Starting torque and efficiency were calculated by the equivalent circuit method. As a result, starting torque and efficiency of the optimized model shows good performance through whole-speed range.

  • This paper deals with optimum design of surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) for automotive component. For a compact system structure, it was designed as a motor with a 14-pole 12-slot concentrated winding and hollow shaft. The motor is a thin type structure which stator outer diameter is relatively large compared to its axial length and is designed to have a high magnetic saturation for increasing the torque density. Since the high magnetic saturation in the stator core increases the axial leakage flux, a 3-dimensional (3-D) finite element analysis (FEA) is indispensable for torque analysis. However, optimum designs using 3-D FEA is inefficient in terms of time and cost. Therefore, equivalent 2-D FEA which is able to consider axial leakage flux is applied to the optimization to overcome the disadvantages of 3-D FEA. The structure for cost reduction is proposed and optimum design using equivalent 2-D FEA has been performed.

LabVIEW Based Laboratory Typed Test Setup for the Determination of Induction Motor Performance Characteristics

  • Induction motors are widely used due to their rugged, robust and easy to care features. Since they are heavily used in industry, testing of three phase induction motors have play a vital role. In order to determine motor equivalent circuit parameters, efficiency of motor, squirrel caged laboratory sized an induction motor test setup is prepared. It is suitable for the induction motor with the frame size of 100 and 112. A virtual Instrumentation typed engineering workbench (called as LabVIEW) software packet, is utilized as a graphical user interface program. Motor input power is measured by measuring the input voltage, current and power factor with the help of hall effect typed voltage and current transformers. Also, the output power is measured by measuring the speed and torque with the help of an encoder and torque sensor. All outputs of the voltage and current transformer, encoder and temperature, torque sensors are given to the Data Acquisition Card (DAQ) which acquires the data for processing and then the equivalent circuit parameters, efficiency, performance and loading characteristics are found out, using LabVIEW based user interface. It is suggested to use this test rig for the quality control of produced motors in industry, and an educational experiment setup in the school laboratories.

  • In this paper, the analysis of a generating torque characteristics of 2-phase induction motor driven with the phase control method is presented. The generating torque equations which represent average torque and pulsating torque are derived from the elementary machine model. The calculating equations which can get the values of average torque and pulsating torque is expressed by the parameters of the equivalent circuit of 2-phase induction motor. According to the calculating equations, these performance characteristics are investigated under various conditions. Finally, a strategy to eliminate non-linearity and pulsating torque generated in driving 2-phase induction motor with the phase control method is presented.
