This research numerically analyses the effects of the damping device on the operation characteristics of a free piston linear engine. In this paper, the free piston linear engine uses spring as a damping device. The investigated parameter is spring hardness which is varied at 0.5, 1, 2.9, and 14.7 N/mm. The effects of spring hardness on the dynamic characteristic, thermodynamic characteristic and electric power of the engine are investigated. Beside, the equivalent ratio is also changed to provide more information for this study. The simulation results show that, by increasing spring hardness from 0.5 to 14.7 N/mm, all of parameters related to dynamic characteristic such as piston velocity, acceleration, displacement, and frequency increase accordingly. Beside, the peak pressure in the cylinder and electric power are also increased when increasing spring hardness. The tendency is also observed at varied equivalent ratios.

The seismic responses of a base Isolated Pressurized Water Reactor(PWR) are investigated using a mathematical model which expresses the superstructure as a linear lumped mass-spring and the seismic Isolator as an equivalent spring-damper. Time history analyses are performed for the 1940 El Centre earthquake with linear amplification. In the analysis 5% of structural damping is used for the superstructure. The effects of high damping rubber bearing on seismic response of the superstructure in base isolated system are evaluated for four stiffness model types. The acceleration responses in base isolated PWR superstructure with high damping rubber bearings are much smaller than those in fixed base structure. In the higher strain region where stiffness behaves non-linearly, the acceleration responses modelled by one equivalent stiffness are smaller than those in nonlinear spring model, and the higher stiffness spring model of isolator exhibits larger peak acceleration response at superstructure in the frequency range above 2.0 Hz. when subjected to linearly amplified 1940 El Centre earthquake.

In order to reduce the automotive weight, the study exchanging the steel for FRP in leaf spring has been studied. The purposes of this study are to develop more effective manufacturing process of FRP leaf springs than conventional one and to examine the prototype which is made by the developed process. As the results, we have developed more productive manufacturing process by 3-5 times than the conventional one and made FRP leaf spring with equivalent or higher quality than steel.

Compliant bi-stable mechanism allows two stable states within its operation range staying at one of the local minimum states of the potential energy. Energy storage characteristics of the bi-stable mechanism offer two distinct and repeatable stable states, which require no power input to maintain it at each stable state. This paper suggests an equivalent model of the chevron-type bi-stable microactuator using the equivalent spring stiffness in the rectilinear and the rotational directions. From this model the range of spring stiffness where the bi-stable mechanism can be operated is analyzed and compared with the results of the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) using ANSYS for the buckling analysis, both of which show a good agreement. Based on the analysis, a newly designed chevron-type bi-stable MEMS actuator using hinges is suggested for the latch-up operation. It is found that the experimental response characteristics of around 36V for the bi-stable actuation for the 60$mu extrm{m}$ stroke correspond very well to the results of the equivalent model analysis after the change in cross-sectional area by the fabrication process is taken into account. Together with the resonance frequency experiment where 1760Hz is measured, it is shown that the chevron-type bi-stable MEMS actuator using hinges is applicable to the optical switch as an actuator.
In this study, a variable elasticity spring was applied to improve the pressure control precision of conventional relief valves. The equilibrium equation of the forces acting on the valve poppet was derived; it is demonstrated that matching the elastic rate of the pressure-adjusting coil spring to the equivalent elastic rate of the flow force improved the pressure override. The procedures that were used to design the variable elasticity spring are presented, and some applications of the variable elasticity spring are also introduced. Computer simulations were used to analyze three cases: a poppet-closed flow force structure, a poppet-open flow force structure with a constant elasticity spring, and a structure containing a variable elasticity spring. It is confirmed that the pressure control precision of the relief valve can be significantly improved upon by applying a variable elasticity spring to the poppet-open flow force structure.

The paper presents the influence of spring dynamics and friction on dynamic responses in a spring-driven cam system. The characteristics of the friction on the camshaft are analyzed using the nonlinear pendulum experiment while the parameters of the friction model are estimated using the optimization technique. The analysis reveals that the friction of the camshaft depends on stick-slip, Stribeck effect and viscous damping. Spring elements are found to have much influence on the dynamic characteristics. Hence, they are modeled as four-degree-of-freedom lumped masses with equivalent springs. The appropriateness of the derived friction model and spring model is verified by its application to a vacuum circuit breaker mechanism of the cam-follower type.

This paper presents the feasibility on the application of composite coil spring, which has great interest in the automobile industry. In order to obtain much lighter weight of the composite spring, it will be necessary to optimize the design variables such as fiber angles and diameter of coil, etc. First of all, mechanical properties were measured to consider the effects of FVR and ply angles for carbon fiber composite material. And the shear modulus with respect to ply angles were derived based on twisting angles calculated by torsional beam model. Next we determined the design parameters of composite coil spring, which has equivalent spring rate to the steel coil spring. In order to assess the proposed method, finite element model of the composite spring was developed and analysed to obtain the spring constant. The results showed that static spring rate of the composite spring was in a good agreement with that of steel spring.

In this study, the transverse and the torsional vibration analyses of a precision dynamic drive system with the magnetic coupling are accomplished. The force of the magnetic coupling is regarded as an equivalent transverse stiffness, which has a nonlinearity as a function of the gap and the eccentricity between a driver and a follower. Such an equivalent stiffness is calculated by and determined by the physical law and the calculated equivalent stiffness is modelled as the truss element. The form of the torque function transmitted through the magnetic coupling is a sinusoidal and such an equivalent angular stiffness, which represents the torque between a driver and a follower, is modelled as a nonlinear spring. The main spindle connected to a follower is assumed to a rigid body. And then finally we have the nonlinear partial differential equation with respect to the angular displacements. Through the procedure mentioned above, we accomplish the results of the torsional vibration analysis in a spindle system with the magnetic coupling.

This study was analyed V-bending in order to analyze the spring-back phenomenon in the roll forming process. The material of forming sheet used in the roll forming process is high tension steel and the product name of sheet material is POSTEN 60. The most important variable is the number of roll passes (3-Pass, 4-Pass, 5-Pass, 6-Pass and 10-Pass) and other roll forming process variables were fixed. To determine the characteristics of the tension and compression, the forming sheet was analyzed by dividing the layer (Upper and Bottom) in the thickness direction from the center line. The results of FEM simulation analysis was derived to von-mises stress equivalent strain, and the spring-back value was calculated according to the final forming shape. The more number of the roll pass, von-mises stress and equivalent strain value of forming sheet were lowed. Also, spring-back values tended to decrease. The results of this study can be utilized for prediction and trend of spring-back value in the roll forming process applied to high tension steel sheet. So, development time and cost of the roll forming process is expected to be reduced.

Low vibration characteristics of a vehicle are mainly influenced by the local stiffness of the joint structure beam section. The method of substituting equivalent beam element to spring element for the joint is presented. Formation process of the equivalent beam joint modeling is described in terms of key section properties. To get required dynamic characteristics section properties of the equivalent beam element are set to design variables. The study shows that the equivalent beam joint model can be effectively used for low frequency vibration analysis of a vehicle.
