  • Vinylester resin was synthesized by reacting epoxy resin with MAA(methacrylic acid) at a equivalent ratio of 1.1/1.0 in the presence of N,N dimethyl benzylamine. Low molecular weight epoxy(DER 331) was used together with higher molecular weight epoxy(DER 662, DER 664) and a novolac epoxy(DEN 439), and the amount of DER 331 was not over 50% of the total epoxy components. Viscosity, cure time and mechanical properties of the vinylester resin were profoundly influenced by the quantity of reacted MAA, and the structure and molecular weight of the epoxy resin. Tensile and flexural strength appeared to be the greatest when DER 331 fraction was 30~40%.

  • Using the finite element analysis model presented in accompanying paper, parametric study was performed in this paper. Various parameters were considered such as the width of wheel loads-induced permanent plastic deformation, backfill, equivalent thickness and orthogonal characteristic of steel mats. The effects of these parameters were analyzed for vertical and rotational displacements, maximum moment and tensile stress. From the parametric studies, it is found that great vertical deflection and tensile stress above allowable flexural tensile strength are developed in steel mats by the wheel loads-induced permanent plastic deformation. Backfill or increasing the thickness of steel mats is a feasible solution on this problem.

  • Concrete is a semi-brittle material, so its compressive strength is high but its tensile strength is low. The use of fiber-reinforced concrete to improve the disadvantages of such concrete can be an effective way to toughen effective toughness, and the performance is improved by using steel fiber reinforced concrete for structures that are vulnerable to bending forces. However, alternative materials are required due to corrosion of steel fiber and lowering of workability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the availability of replacing steel fiber reinforced concrete by evaluating physical properties, mechanical properties and drying shrinkage properties of concrete using macro forta fiber with excellent diffusibility. Experimental results show that the macro forta fiber has better fluidity and mechanical performance than the steel fiber reinforced concrete. It was also confirmed that the crack resistance of concrete using Macro Forta fiber is effective in improving structural cracking and drying shrinkage resistance compared to steel fiber reinforced concrete.

  • The collapse of concrete structures by extreme loads such as impact, explosion, and blast from terrorist attacks causes severe property damage and human casualties. Concrete has excellent impact resistance to such extreme loads in comparison with other construction materials. Nevertheless, existing concrete structures designed without consideration of the impact or blast load with high strain rate are endangered by those unexpected extreme loads. In this study, to improve the impact resistance, the static and impact behaviors of concrete beams caste with steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) with 0~1.5% (by volume) of 30 mm long hooked steel fibers were assessed. Test results indicated that the static and impact resistances, flexural strength, ductility, etc., were significantly increased when higher steel fiber volume fraction was applied. In the case of the layered concrete (LC) beams including greater steel fiber volume fraction in the tensile zone, the higher static and impact resistances were achieved than those of the normal steel fiber reinforced concrete beam with an equivalent steel fiber volume fraction. The impact test results were also compared with the analysis results obtained from the single degree of freedom (SDOF) system anaysis considering non-linear material behaviors of steel fiber reinforced concrete. The analysis results from SDOF system showed good agreement with the experimental maximum deflections.

  • To determine the effect of chemical structure of linear amine curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin DGEBA was cured with diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM), diaminodiphenyl sulphone (DDS) in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work, the effect of aromatic amine curing agents. In contrast, the results show that the DGEBA/DDS cure system having the sulfone structure between the benzene rings had higher values in the conversion of epoxide, density, shrinkage (%), glass transition temperature, tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength than the DGEBA/DDM cure system having methylene structure between the benzene rings, whereas the DGEBA/DDM cure system presented higher values in the maximum exothermic temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal stability. These results are caused by the relative effects of sulfone group having strong electronegativity and methylene group having (+) repulsive property and stem from the effect of the conversion ratio of epoxide group. The result of fractography shows that the each grain size of the DDM/DGEBA system with feather-like structure is larger than that of the DDS/DGEBA system.
