Erythrosine is used a food coloring, ink and dye, etc. but erithrosine is rarely used in United States due to its known hazards. The adsorption characteristics of erythrosine by granular activated carbon were investigated in the batch adsorber and the packed column. The adsorptivity of activated carbon for erythrosine were largely improved by pH control. When the pH was 11 in the sample, the erythrosine could be removed 98% of initial concentration. It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of erythrosine on granular activated carbon was successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation in the concentration range from 10mg/L to 1,000mg/L. The characteristics of breakthrough curve of activated carbon packed column depend on the design variables such as initial concentration, bed height, and flow rate.

This study was to evaluate the influential parameters such as intial Cs concentration, reaction temperature, contact time and pH variation of solution on Cs adsorption. Using the experimental data, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamic properties were analyzed. The Cs ion adsorption of the zeolite X was effective in the range from pH 5 to 10 and reached equilibrium after 60 minutes. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Cs ion with the zeolite X was described well by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cs ion calculated from Langmuir isotherm model at 293~333 K were from 303.03 mg/g to 333.33 mg/g. It was found that thermodynamic property of Cs ion absorption on the zeolite X was spontaneous and endothermic reaction. The experimental data were fitted a second-order polynomial equation by the multiple regression analysis. The values of the dependent variable calculated by this best fitted model equation were in very good agreement with the experimentally obtained values.

We investigated simultaneous removal of heavy metals such as Cr, Ni, and Zn by adsorption onto powdered activated carbon (PAC) and PAC modified with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (PAC-SDDC). Modification of PAC was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Both PAC and PAC-SDDC reached adsorption equilibrium within 48 h, and the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order reaction kinetics. The removal of metals was enhanced with increasing both adsorbent dosage and followed the descending order of Cr > Ni > Zn for PAC and Cr > Zn > Ni for PAC-SDDC, respectively. Adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second order kinetics. Adsorption kinetic results were well fitted by the Freundlich isotherm except for Cr adsorption onto PAC. The optimum pH for heavy metal adsorption onto PAC was 5, whereas that for PAC-SDDC ranged from 7 to 9, indicating that modification of PAC with SDDC significantly enhanced heavy metal adsorption, especially under neutral and alkaline pH conditions. Our results imply that SDDC modified PAC can be applied to effectively remove heavy metals especially Cr in plating wastewaters without adjusting pH from alkaline to neutral.
This study investigated the possibility of using potassium titanate oxide ($K_2Ti_4O_9$) and acrylic acid-grafted polypropylene fabric (PP-g-AA) as adsorbents capable of removing strontium from aqueous solutions. $K_2Ti_4O_9$ showed the highest rate of strontium removal in the weak alkaline range, while the PP-g-AA increased strontium removal in the neutral range. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of the $K_2Ti_4O_9$ was not affected by the coexistence of K and Na ions, while the adsorption capacity decreased when Ca and Mg ions were present at the same concentration as that of strontium. When coexisted at the same concentration as strontium, Na, K, Ca, and Mg ions strongly reduced the adsorption capacity of the PP-g-AA. The results also indicated that the adsorption of strontium on $K_2Ti_4O_9$ was consistent with both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. In contrast, the adsorption of strontium on the PP-g-AA was more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the adsorption equilibrium time of $K_2Ti_4O_9$ was generally 12 h, while that of the PP-g-AA was 5 h, indicating that the adsorption rates were consistent with the pseudo-second order kinetics model. $K_2Ti_4O_9$ and the PP-g-AA could be regenerated by simple washing with 0.5 N HCl.
New technologies or improvement of the existing technologies are required to enhance the efficiency of removal of pollutants from wastewater. In this study we attempted to produce and test the activated carbon produced from the refused tea waste for the removal of dyes from wastewater. The objectives of this investigation were to produce activated carbon from refused tea waste by chemical activation, evaluate its performance for the removal of color produced from Acid Yellow 36, and the modeling of its dye removal with the kinetic study. The activation was performed in two steps namely carbonization at $375{\pm}25^{\circ}C$ and chemical activation with HCl at $800^{\circ}C$ under the absence of Oxygen. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies were performed with a textile dye, Acid Yellow 36, at different concentrations (20-80 mg/L). The maximum dye removal (~90%) observed at 80 mg/L dye concentration and it reduced at low dye concentrations. Maximum adsorption (71.97 mg/g) was recorded at 96 h at $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Low pH increased the dye adsorption (pH=2; 78.27 mg/g) while adsorption reduced at high pH levels indicating that the competition occurs in between OH- ions and AY36 molecules for the adsorption sites in RTAC. The Langmuir isotherm model clearly explained the dye adsorption, favorably, by RTAC. Moreover, kinetic studied performed showed that the pseudo second order kinetic model clearly describes the dye adsorption. Based on the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that RTAC can be used for the removal of textile dyes.
The adsorption characteristics of bisphenol A (BPA) were investigated using activated carbon based on waste citrus peel (which is abandoned in large quantities in Jeju Island), denoted as WCP-AC, and surface-modified with various $P_2O_5$ concentrations (WCP-SM-AC). Moreover, coconut-based activated carbon (which is marketed in large amounts) was surface-modified in an identical manner for comparison. The adsorption equilibrium of BPA using the activated carbons before and after surface modification was obtained at nearly 48 h. The adsorption process of BPA by activated carbons and surface-modified activated carbons was well-described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model. The experimental data in the adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir isotherm model. With increasing $P_2O_5$ concentration (250-2,000 mg/L), the amounts of BPA adsorbed by WCP-SM-AC increased till 1,000 mg/L of $P_2O_5$; however, above 1,000 mg/L of $P_2O_5$, the same amounts adsorbed at 1,000 mg/L of $P_2O_5$ were obtained. With increasing reaction temperature, the reaction rate increased, but the adsorbed amounts decreased, especially for the activated carbon before surface modification. The amounts of BPA adsorbed by WCP-AC and WCP-SM-AC were similar in the pH range of 5-9, but significantly decreased at pH 11, and increased with increasing ionic strength due to screening and salting-out effects.

This study was conducted to research the biosorption characteristics using algae, Spirulina platensis, for the removal of Pb and Cu ions in wastewater. Both of free algal cell and immobilized algae by Ca-alginate were used as bioadsorbent, and experiment was proceed in batch reactor for Pb and Cu ions removal, respectively. In the biosorption of Pb and Cu ions by free Spirulina platensis cell, the adsorption equilibrium reached within 20 minute. The higher adsorbed amount of Pb and Cu was shown as increasing of initial concentration of Pb and Cu, and pH of solution, respectively, and the optimum pH was 4.5$\sim$5.0. Under the conditions of initial concentration of Pb or Cu are 200 mg/L, the maximum amounts of Pb and Cu adsorbed to the unit weight of Spirulina platensis were 86.43 and 57.02 mg/g, respectively, and these values were 1.94 and 1.48 times higher than those of activated carbon under same conditions, respectively. The biosorption kinetics of Pb and Cu ions by free Spirulina platensis cell fitted very well to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum amount of Pb or Cu adsorbed to the unit mass of adsorbent by the Langmuir isotherm($q_{max}$) represented as 95.24 and 62.50 mg/g, respectively. The FT-IR results of free Spirulina platensis biomass showed that biomass has different functional groups and these functional groups are able to react with metal ions in aqueous solution. In the biosorption of Pb and Cu ions by Ca-alginate immobilized algae Spirulina platensis, the adsorption equilibrium reached within 40 min. and observed a little diffusion limitation differed from the free algal cell adsorption.
The use of microalgal biomass is an interesting technology for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions owing to its high metal-binding capacity, but the interactions with bacteria as a strategy for the removal of toxic metals have been poorly studied. The goal of the current research was to investigate the potential of Burkholderia tropica co-immobilized with Chlorella sp. in polyurethane discs for the biosorption of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions and to evaluate the influence of different Hg(II) concentrations (0.041, 1.0, and 10 mg/l) and their exposure to different contact times corresponding to intervals of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 h. As expected, microalgal bacterial biomass adhered and grew to form a biofilm on the support. The biosorption data followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption equilibrium was well described by either Langmuir or Freundlich adsorption isotherm, reaching equilibrium from 1 h. In both bacterial and microalgal immobilization systems in the co-immobilization of Chlorella sp. and B. tropica to different concentrations of Hg(II), the kinetics of biosorption of Hg(II) was significantly higher before 60 min of contact time. The highest percentage of biosorption of Hg(II) achieved in the co-immobilization system was 95% at pH 6.4, at 3.6 g of biosorbent, $30{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, and a mercury concentration of 1 mg/l before 60 min of contact time. This study showed that co-immobilization with B. tropica has synergistic effects on biosorption of Hg(II) ions and merits consideration in the design of future strategies for the removal of toxic metals.

The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the ion exchange characteristics of five types of Zeolite(Zeolite-A, 13X, Y, Mordenite, Chabazite) for effective removal of Cs, Sr and Co ions in water solution at low concentration(0.01 N and 0.005 N). Total ion exchange capacity and equilibrium isotherm are measured, and free-energy change(${\Delta}G^0$) and enthalpy change(${\Delta}H^0$) in ion exchange reaction are calculated from experimental results. In addition the ion exchange equilibrium in the three-component system for three types of zeolite showing better efficiency is measured and plotted in triangle coordinates. It is shown from experimental results that the magnitude of free-energy change increases with the increasing ion selectivity, and the difference of free energy change between ions correlates closely with that of ion selectivity. The results also shows that Chabazite is effective for the adsorption of Cs ion, and Zeolite-A and Zeolite-13X for that of Sr and Co ions.
The relation between the phase-shift profile fur the intermediate frequencies and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm at the poly-Ir/0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface has been studied using ac impedance measurements, i.e., the phase-shift methods. The simplified interfacial equivalent circuit consists of the serial connection of the electrolyte resistance $(R_s)$, the faradaic resistance $(R_F)$, and the equivalent circuit element $(C_P)$ of the adsorption pseudoca-pacitance $(C_\phi)$. The comparison of the change rates of the $\Delta(-\phi)/{\Delta}E\;and\;\Delta{\theta}/{\Delta}E$ are represented. The delayed phase shift $(\phi)$ depends on both the cathode potential (E) and frequency (f), and is given by $\phi=tan^{-1}[1/2{\pi}f(R_s+R_F)C_P]$. The phase-shift profile $(-\phi\;vs.\;E)$ for the intermediate frequency (ca. 1 Hz) can be used as an experimental method to determine the Langmuir adsorption isotherm $(\theta\;vs.\;E)$. The equilibrium constant (K) for H adsorption and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{ads})$ of H adsorption at the poly-Ir/0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte interface are $2.0\times10^{-4}$ and 21.1kJ/mol, respectively. The H adsorption is attributed to the over-potentially deposited hydrogen (OPD H).
