  • In this paper, the nonlinear static and free vibration analysis of Euler-Bernoulli composite beam model reinforced by functionally graded single-walled carbon nanotubes (FG-SWCNTs) with initial geometrical imperfection under uniformly distributed load using finite element method (FEM) is investigated. The governing equations of equilibrium are derived by the Hamilton's principle and von Karman type nonlinear strain-displacement relationships are employed. Also the influences of various loadings, amplitude of the waviness, UD, USFG, and SFG distributions of carbon nanotube (CNT) and different boundary conditions on the dimensionless transverse displacements and nonlinear frequency ratio are presented. It is seen that with increasing load, the displacement of USFG beam under force loads is more than for the other states. Moreover it can be seen that the nonlinear to linear natural frequency ratio decreases with increasing aspect ratio (h/L) for UD, USFG and SFG beam. Also, it is shown that at the specified value of (h/L), the natural frequency ratio increases with the increasing the values amplitude of waviness while the dimensionless nonlinear to linear maximum deflection decreases. Moreover, with considering the amplitude of waviness, the stiffness of Euler-Bernoulli beam model reinforced by FG-CNT increases. It is concluded that the R parameter increases with increasing of volume fraction while the rate of this parameter decreases. Thus one can be obtained the optimum value of FG-CNT volume fraction to prevent from resonance phenomenon.

  • In order to improve the seismic behaviors of traditional steel-concrete mixed structure, a novel steel concrete mixed structure consisting of steel frames braced with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) and a concrete tube is proposed. Based on several assumptions, the simplified mechanical model of the novel mixed structure is established, and the shear and bending stiffness formulas of the steel frames, BRBs and concrete tube are respectively introduced. The equilibrium differential equation of the novel mixed structure under horizontal load is developed based on the structural elastic theory. The simplified algorithms to determine the lateral displacement and internal forces of the novel mixed structure under the inverted-triangle distributed load, uniformly load and top-concentrated load are then obtained considering several boundary conditions and compatible deformation conditions. The effectiveness of the simplified algorithms is verified by FEM comparison.

  • In this work, the static behavior of FGM macro and nano-plates under thermomechanical loading. Equilibrium equations are determined by using virtual work principle and local and non-local theory. The novelty of the current model is using a new displacement field with four variables and a warping function considering the effect of shear. Through this analysis, the considered sandwich FGM macro and nanoplates are a homogeneous core and P-FGM faces, homogeneous faces and an E-FGM core and finally P-FGM faces and an E-FGM core. The analytical solution is obtained by using Navier method. The model is verified with previous published works by other models and very close results are obtained within maximum 1% deviation. The numerical results are performed to present the influence of the various parameters such as, geometric ratios, material index as well as the scale parameters are investigated. The present model can be applicable for sandwich FG plates used in nuclear, aero-space, marine, civil and mechanical applications.

  • The vibration characteristics of post-buckled laminated composite doubly curved shells are investigated. The finite element method is used for the analysis of post-buckling and free vibration of post-buckled laminated shells. The geometric non-linear finite element model includes the general non-linear terms in the strain-displacement relationships. The shell geometry used in the present formulation is derived using an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Based on the principle of virtual work the non-linear finite element equations are derived. Arc-length method is implemented to capture the load-displacement equilibrium curve. The vibration characteristics of post-buckled shell are performed using tangent stiffness obtained from the converged deflection. The code is first validated and then employed to generate numerical results. Parametric studies are performed to analyze the snapping and vibration characteristics. The relationship between loads and fundamental frequencies and between loads and the corresponding displacements are determined for various parameters such as thickness ratio and shallowness.

  • A series of field tests were performed to suggest a rational method for the stability evaluation of soft clay. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was used to compare and analyze with various stability evaluation methods, and to investigate the applicability of the methods for stability evaluation of soft clay. The limit equilibrium method, numerical analysis and field monitoring methods were used to analyze the stability evaluation. The horizontal displacement was abruptly increased when physicla properties of soft clay reached its maximum values and therefore, the values of these properties could be used to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The evaluation of the stability of clay embankment was suggested to use inclination of ccrve rather than critical line, and the minimum satey factor of 1.2 or larger for natural clay was recommeded . Therefore, the evaluation of short term stability of soft clay could be effectively peformed with the hypefrbolic model and the field monitored data.

  • In this study, comprehensive seismic performance analysis were performed for the concrete face rockfill dam(CFRD) designed seismic coefficient method(0. 10g). The static and pseudo-static FEM analysis, limited equilibrium method and dynamic FEM analysis were used for the dam safety analysis. The results of the seismic analysis were that the minimum factor of safety of down slope was 1.2 and horizontal displacement increased 8cm and vertical displacement increased 1.2cm at dam crest rather than those of static condition. The model dam did not show any serious tai lure in seismic stabi1ity for 0.13g. And much more research is still necessary in seismic safety of CFRD.

  • This paper presents a deformable strut-and-tie model of determining the shear strengths and ultimate deformations of the shear-dominant reinforced concrete members. The proposed model originates from the strut-and-tie model concept and satisfies equilibrium, compatibility, constitutive laws, and the geometric conditions of shear deformation. This study attempts to apply deformation patterns to strut-and-tie models. The yielding of flexural reinforcements determines yielding states and the ultimate states of reinforced concrete coupling beam are defined as the ultimate compressive strain of struts and the degradation of compressive strength due to principal tensile strain of struts. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model is then tested against available experimental data. The parameters reviewed include the ratios of truss action and arch action, the reinforcement ratios, and the shear span-depth ratio. It is expected that this model can be applied to displacement-based design methods.

  • In this study a truss model is used for the geometrically nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of a thin shallow arch subject to snap-through. Thanks to the very simple geometry of a truss, the equilibrium conditions can be easily written and the global stiffness matrix can be easily updated with respect to the deformed structure, within each step of the analysis. A very coarse discretization is applied; so, in a very simple way, the high frequency modes are suppressed from the beginning and there is no need to develop a complicated reduced-order technique. Two short computer programs have been developed for the geometrically nonlinear static analysis by displacement control of a plane truss model of a structure as well as for its dynamic analysis by the step-by-step time integration algorithm of trapezoidal rule, combined with a predictor-corrector technique. These two short, fully documented computer programs are applied on the geometrically nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of a specific thin shallow arch subject to snap-through.

  • An analytical method based on the nonlinear layered finite element method is developed to simulate an overall load-deflection behavior of strengthened beams. The developed model distinguishes itself by its capability to trace residual flexural behavior of a beam after the fracture of brittle strengthening materials at peak load. The model. which uses a rather advanced numerical technique for iterative convergence to equilibrium, can be regarded as superior to the two models based on load control and displacement control The model predictions were compared with the experimental results and it was observed that there was good agreement between them.
