  • In order to develop a high voltage insulation material, epoxy/micro-silica composites (EMC) and epoxy/micro-silica/nano-silica composites (EMNC) with three different particle sizes in ${\mu}m$ and one particle size in nm were prepared and their tensile and flexural tests were carried out and the data was estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The tensile strength of the neat epoxy was 82.8 MPa and those of the EMCs were larger than that of the neat epoxy, and they were much more advanced by the addition of 10 nm sized nano-silica to the EMCs. Flexural strength showed the same tendency of the tensile strength. As the micro-particle size decreased, tensile and flexural strength increased.

  • In this paper, the long time breakdown characteristic of the epoxy composite, which is widely used in the insulation system for high voltage application, was estimated with Weibull distribution. In the procedure of the estimation, the short time breakdown characteristics for the epoxy composite specimens, which were made with the variation of hardener and/or filler, were tested firstly. Then the long time voltage-to-time test was implemented. Finally, the long time breakdown voltage of each specimen was estimated with the parameters obtained from the statistical treatment with Weibull distribution. Base on the results, it has been found that the optimal weight ratio of epoxy resin/hardener/filler that has the excellent long time breakdown characteristic was 100/100/65. It was due to the silane treatment which relieves the electric field at the interface between filler and epoxy.

  • The cure kinetics of blends of epoxy (DGEBA:diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A)/anhydride (NMA:nadic methyl anhydride) resin with synthesized amino terminated polyetherimide (AT-PEI) were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysizer(DMA) under isothermal condition to determine the reaction parameters and gel-vitrification behavior. The fracture toughness of AT-PEI 20phr/epoxy resin system was improved over 224% and 42.5% more than neat epoxy resin and commercial PEI/Epoxy Resin System.

  • The investigation of cure kinetics, morphology, and fracture toughness studies on epoxy resin/amine terminated PEI/Anhydride system were performed by differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Modified autocatalystic kinetics model was applied by isothermal scan test. The fracture toughness for the neat epoxy resin was 2.15 MPa m0.5 and the fracture toughness was improved 45% as neat epoxy resin system. The generation of secondary phase of AT-PEI was observed and its size was grown up by increasing contents of PEI.

  • A conventional epoxy-microsilica composite (EMC) and an epoxy-microsilica-nanosilicate composite (EMNC) were prepared in order to apply them to mold-type transformers, current transformers (CT) and potential transformers (PT). Nanosilicate was exfoliated in a epoxy resin using our electric field dispersion process and AC insulation breakdown strength at $30{\sim}150^{\circ}C$, glass transition temperature and viscoelasticity were studied. AC insulation breakdown strength of EMNC was higher than that of EMC and that value of EMNC was far higher at high temperature. Glass transition temperature and viscoelasticity property of EMNC was higher than those of EMC at high temperature. These results was due to the even dispersion of nanosilicates among the nanosilicas, which could be observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). That is, the nanosilicates interrupt the electron transfer and restrict the mobility of the epoxy chains.

  • Silica fillers were coated by plasma polymer coatings of 1,3-diaminopropane, allylamine, pyrrole, 1,2-epoxy-5-hexene, allyl mercaptan and allyl alcohol using RF plasma (13.56 MHz). The coated fillers were then mixed with biphenyl epoxy, phenol novolac (curing agent) and/or triphenylphosphine (catalyst), and subjected to DSC analyses in order to elucidate the chemical reaction between functional moieties in the plasma polymer coatings and the epoxy resin. Only the samples with 1,3-diaminopropane and allylamine plasma polymer coated silica fillers showed heat of reaction peaks when they were mixed with biphenyl epoxy resin only, while these samples as well as the samples with 1,3-diaminopropane, allylamine and pyrrole plasma polymer coated silica fillers exhibited heat of reaction peaks when mixed with both biphenyl epoxy and phenol novolac (curing agent).

  • For the purpose of practical use of epoxy composite materials, it has been widely known that adding filler is an indispensable condition for cost-effectiveness and reinforcement of mechanical strength. However, dielectric strength of insulators made of epoxy composites rapidly decreases due to interfaces between the epoxy resin and filler particles. In this paper, it is investigated that the electrical properties of epoxy resins as the function of nano-$SiO_2$ content. We obtained that breakdown voltage of 0.4[wt%] specimens is higher than the other $SiO_2$ content.

  • In this study, epoxy/mica composite was prepared by mixing with mechanical stirrer together with homogenizer, and the effect of amino-type silane coupling agent was also studied. To reduce the viscosity without any decrement of other properties, 1,4-Butanediol diglycidyl ether (1,4-BDGE) as an aliphatic epoxy reactive diluent was introduced to the epoxy/mica composite in order to use as vanish for high voltage motor and generator stator winding. It was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation that interfacial characteristics between organic epoxy and inorganic mica was modified by coupling agent treatment so that glass transition temperature increased, and tensile strength and electrical breakdown strength increased. The properties were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis and the ac electrical breakdown strength was 20.2% modified by treating silane coupling agent.

  • Asphalt concrete pavements are susceptible to deformation and failure compared to cement concrete pavements. Epoxy is commonly used to enhance the bonding and durability of structures. Based on this concept, an epoxy and ceramics combined mixture was developed and applied to the field to estimate the pavement performance, Laboratory and field performance tests were conducted to observe the applicability of epoxy and ceramics composite materials compared to the conventional one. In this research, the epoxy and ceramics composite mixturewas used in two ways. 7 mm and 15 mm of thin surface layers using the mixture were constructed on cement and asphalt concrete pavements, respectively, after surface treatment. 12 months of field performance surveys were conducted to observe the resistances to the crack and deformation. According to the field performance tests, epoxy and ceramics combined mixture showed better bonding and field performances than the conventional one.

  • In this paper, we have studied the physical properties of braided composites for use as aircraft stringers. Process variables such as drum winder speed, braid velocity, and mandrel diameter for $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ braid preforms were quantified and different epoxy resin types were applied to the braided preform using TGDDM, YD-128. Physical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of braided composites were investigated. Thermal properties and decomposition temperature of epoxy resin were investigated by TGA analysis. As a result, the lower the angle of the braid composites, the higher the tensile strength and the Flexural strength. The physical properties of braided composites fabricated using TGDDM epoxy resin were superior to the physical properties of braided composites fabricated using YD-128 epoxy resin. This is because the molecular weight of TGDDM epoxy resin was higher than that of YD-128 epoxy resin.
