The Effect of Water Environmental Program Focused on Problem-Based Learning for Elementary School Students on Pro-Environmental Behavior (문제 중심 학습의 물 환경교육 프로그램이 초등학생의 환경 친화적 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of water environmental program using PBL on pro-environmental behavior for 4th graders in elementary school. The results of this study are as follows. First, the experimental group is more effective in promoting the pro-environmental attitude compared with the control group. Second, the experimental group is more effective in promoting the pro-environmental behavior compared with the control group. Third, the experimental group is not more effective in promoting the pro-environmental knowledge compared with the control group. Fourth, students are concerned and interested in the environment and environmental problems of the daily-life. And, they presented positive attitude and active participation toward environmental preservation. So, the process of PBL using water environmental program showed that it promotes active learning participation and various action. In conclusion, the environmental education program through PBL program has a positive effect on pro-environmental attitudes and behavior of elementary school students. It is demanded that more intensive research on this study should be done, linking with teaching and learning method, as a follow-up activity.

A Mother's Influence on Her Children Regrading Environmental Preservation (어머니의 환경보전행동이 아동기 자녀의 환경보전행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to find a mother's influence on her children regarding environmental preservation. The questions of this study are how a mother's background variables influence on their own behaviors, how the children's background variables influences on their own behaviors, how a mother's background variables influence on their children behaviors. This is used self-writing questionaires the 538 subjects are 4th, 5th and 6th grade children and their mothers living in Kwangiu, in June, 1998. The data are analyzed by Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Pearson's correlation, Regression analysis, Path analysis, Coronbach'$\alpha$ coefficent, and Factor analysis. These are the major resets of this study. 1) In case of mothers, the background variables for them to be influenced the environmental presentation behaviors show the frequency of contact for environmental information, average income, family cohesions, the level of communication, egoistic orientation, and age. 2) In Children, the background variables which are influenced on their environmental presentation behaviors represent the frequency of contact for environmental information, family cohesion, biospheric orientation, and the grade level of children. This is, the children who have the more chance of environmental information contact, the higher family cohesion, the higher biospheric orientation, and the lower grade level show the more environmental preservation behaviors. 3) The children who grow seeing their mothers'environmental behaviors such as sorted disposal, recycle behavior, and purchasing behaviors also show the more same behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study was to achieve regarding the environmental problem due to excessive economic development for human being's continous life and to try to enhance the quality of life. The major findings of this study are as followings: 1) Environmental consciousness and activity are closely correlated and also postively related to quality of life. Accordingly, environmental consciousness should be inspired and the environmental activities performed successfully to enhance the quality of life so that we can lead higher quality of life. 2) Income takes the highest position in the life-influncing factor with the following sequence of environmental consciousness, preservation acitivity, housekeeper's education level and age. So, earlier and steady education are important in raising the education level to have people equipped with environmental consciousness and activity. Moreover, we should be able to create income through education to enhance the quality of life. Accordingly, we should take a positive measure for enhancing environmental preservation and quality of life to meet two solutions, such as mankind's continuous development and value-oriented life.

A Study on Consumers' Demand for Environmentally Sustainable Home Electrical Goods (환경친화적인 가전소비재에 대한 소비자의 수요도 연구)

  • Not only consumers but also corporations need to use and develop sustainable consumption for environmental preservation these days. This research studied the level of environmental consciousness, knowledge of environmental problems and consumption behavior for environmentally sustainable home electrical goods. This study was conducted by survey method and the sample was 300 housewives aged 20-50 living in Seoul and urban areas in 2003. The consciousness for the environment and seriousness of theenvironmental problems were very high. Nevertheless, the level of consumption behavior for environmentally sustainable goods was lower than the consciousness. Of the total sample, 33% were aware of the ultrasonic-waves-sink, 73% of the non-detergent-wash machine, 50% of the vacuum-without-trash envelope, and only 17% of the micro-oven-zero air power. Over 50% of the sample wanted to buy these environmentally sustainable, home electrical goods, especially working housewives.

Environmental Perception, Ethical Consumer Behavior, and Price Sensitivity: Impact on Using Intention of Eco-Friendly Products

  • Purpose - This study aims to identify the effect of corporate eco-friendly marketing, which focuses on corporate social responsibility, on the environment, natural preservation and protection, and environmental concern among consumers. Research design, data, and methodology - A total of 92 valid questionnaires were used for analysis. A structured model was established and a 3-step mediated regression test was employed to see how consumers' perception of ethical consumer behavior and price sensitivity are influential in relation to the impact of consumer's perception of eco-friendliness on the using intention in relation to eco-friendly products. Results - Three factors of eco-friendly perception all have a positive impact on ethical consumer behavior, thus lowering their price sensitivity. In particular, it is found that environmental knowledge and environmental concern are important to promote ethical consumer behavior. Conclusion - It is found that, to increase the using intention of eco-friendly products, an enterprise should practice an eco-friendly marketing strategy, deliver eco-friendly related knowledge, and include contents to allow consumers to take an interest in the environment for effective performance of marketing.

A behavioral approach to increase recycling behavior: An examinination of effect of environmental alteration and prompts (환경문제에서의 재활용 행동 증진을 위한 행동분석적 실험 연구 - 환경적 변화와 프롬트의 효과를 중심으로-)

  • This study examined the effect of environmental alteration and prompts on recycling behavior. An A-B-BC with a control condition design was employed. Subjects in this study were college students, professors, and employees at a university building. After a baseline phase, environmental alteration was I effect in the next phase and both environmental alteration and prompts were in effect in the final phase for the control condition. The environmental alteration consisted of providing four separation containers for the paper cups, cans recyclable paper, and the disposable on each floor in the building. The prompts consisted of providing the information about the importance of environmental preservation and how to separate the materials in the appropriate containers using an information board and pamphlets. The dependent variables were (1) the number of cans collected in can container, (2) the number of paper cups collected in cup container, (3) the rate of correct separation of cans, (4) the rate of correct separation of paper cups, and (5) the weight of disposable. The rates of correct separations of cans and paper cups were obtained by calculating the percentage of thenumber of recyclable cans and paper cups in the corresponding containers. The results indicated that environmental alteration had positive effects on all the dependent variables. Also, when the prompts were added to the environmental alteration, the incremental effect of the prompts was demonstrated. The implications and limitations of theses findings were discussed and the direction of future studies was also proposed.

The Consumer Consciousness and Behavior on Environmental Problems of the High School Girls (여고생의 환경문제에 대한 소비자 의식과 행동)

  • The purpose of this study are to measure the overall level of consumer consciousness and behavior on environmental problems of high school girl students and to analyze the most influential factors related to the socio-demography and the education on environment. This study also aims at inspiring the students with sound view of environments and furnishing basic data for the development of consumer education program. The researcher used questionnaires on consumer consciousness scale and consumer behavior scale for the purpose of this study. 640 students were surveyed randomly in Kwangju and Chonnam, and 608 questionnaires were selected as final analysis data. Major Findings were as follows: 1. The average score of consumer consciousness and behavior on environmental problems of the high school girls were 86.0 on scale of 110 (72.7 on scale of 100) and 63.3 on scale of 115(43.8 on scale of 100). 2. The consumer consciousness and behavior on environmental problems of the high school girls showed partial differences according to the socio-demography variable. 3. The consumer consciousness and behavior on environmental problems of the high school girls showed partial differences according to the education to environment variables. 4. The consumer behavior on environmental problems had a positive relationship with the consumer consciousness. 5. The most influential variables on the consumer consciousness were necessity of the education on environment, the type of school, region, and monthly allowance money in sequence. And the most influential variables on the consumer behavior were the campaign on environment in home, participation in environment preservation, cosciousness of environment, and education experience on environment in sequence.   • Environmental issues are increasingly important in consumer decision-making. This paper focuses on the consumer's role in consumption process-purchase, use, and disposal, which has significant environmental consequences. And this paper discusses several approaches to motivate consumer's awareness and responsibility for the environment and further his/her lifestyle change. The Green Consumer should be able to consider the implications of his/her lifestyle choices as well as his/her purchase, use, and disposal decisions. Consumer education and various consumer movements for environment preservation should keep the goal in perspective, which is not only to motivate consumer's long-term behavior change but also to consign his/her buying power and political power to help make changes where he/she really counts.

Elution Behavior of Nutrient Salts from Sediment and its Impact on Water Bodies

  • This paper describes the influence of nutrient salts eluted from the bottom of a closed water area where polluted sediment has been deposited by inflowing river water. The elution pattern was monitored at our experimental facility. Both the sediment pore water and water above the bottom were sampled using a dialyzer sampler (peeper). The pore water of the eutrophicated sediment contained a large amount of nutrient salts, and the effect of elution was confined to a limited area of the bottom surface. The nutrient concentration of the sediment pore water was closely related to both the water temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. The eluted nutrients from the sediment provided a source for phytoplankton and algae growth. This experimental data indicated that the water quality of the surface was not directly connected to the eluted nutrient salts, while it was indirectly affected by the total ecosystem, including all the organisms within an area and their environment.

Effects of STS Program on Environmental Education (STS 프로그램이 중학생들의 환경 문제에 대한 태도와 학업 성취도에 미치는 효과)

  • The development of science and technology not only improved the quality of life of human being, but also brought about environmental problems. Consequently, consensus has been established that early environmental education for youngsters is critical for the preservation of clean environment. A conventional way of teaching has not been very effective for changing their attitude and behavior regarding environmental problems. STS program, which has been one of the major trend in science education, intends to teach science through everyday experience rather than knowledge. This study purports to examine the effectiveness of STS program on environmental problems compared to conventional teaching method. Six week program was developed and applied to subchapter 'Environmental Pollutions & Our Lives' of 3rd grade middle school science text book. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. STS program was significantly effective in changing students' attitude(p<.001). It was effective not only changing their thinking but also changing their behavior. 2. There was no difference between the STS program and conventional teaching method in improving students' knowledge(p>.05). 3. The correlation between the level of knowledge achievement and the attitude on environment was very low(r=.0564,p>.05).
