  • For the three parameter Weibull distribution, the parameter estimation techniques are applied and the asymptotic variances of the quantile to obtain the confidence limits for a given return period are derived. Three estimation techniques are used for these purposes: the methods of moments, maximum likelihood and probability weighted moments. The three parameter Weibull distribution as a flood frequency model is applied to actual flood data.

  • The prediction of ozone formation was studied using the neural network and the stochastic method. Parameter estimation method and artificial neural network(ANN) method were employed in the stochastic scheme. In the parameter estimation method, extended least squares(ELS) method and recursive maximum likelihood(RML) were used to achieve the real time parameter estimation. Autoregressive moving average model with external input(ARMAX) was used as the ozone formation model for the parameter estimation method. ANN with 3 layers was also tested to predict the ozone formation. To demonstrate the performance of the ozone formation prediction schemes used in this work, the prediction results of ozone formation were compared with the real data. From the comparison it was found that the prediction schemes based on the parameter estimation method and ANN method show an acceptable accuracy with limited prediction horizon.

  • Multidirectional random waves that obliquely approach the shore were found to become directionally asymmetric due to refraction. The directional asymmetry was expressed in terms of the asymmetry parameter which is related to the maximum spreading parameter ($s_{max}$). In this study, we calculate variation of both the asymmetry and maximum spreading parameters at different water depths for various cases of incident wave angles and maximum spreading parameters in deep water. These values are different from Goda and Suzuki (1975) who neglected directional asymmetry of waves. In calculating directional asymmetry and maximum spreading parameters, we use the JONSWAP spectrum (Hasselmann et al., 1973) and Lee et al.'s (2010) directional distribution function. The processes and results are nondimensionalized with significant wave height, peak frequency and peak wave length in deep water.

  • This paper presents a systematic approach for estimating material performance and designing mix proportion of concrete based on an application of Bayesian method in the form of satisfaction curves. The one-parameter satisfaction curve represents a satisfaction probability of a concrete performance criterion as a function of concrete material parameter. An analysis method to combine multiple satisfaction curves to form one unique satisfaction curve that can relate the performance of concrete to a single evaluating value called Goodness value is proposed. A proposed PBMD procedure and examples of application of the PBMD method for concrete mix proportion design are carried out to verify the validity of the proposed method. Finally, the comparison between the expected performance results of a concrete mix proportion designed using PBMD to the ACI estimation equation calculated results are performed to check the applicability of the method to actual construction.

  • In this study, the separation of short and long durations for estimation the parameters of IDF curve is suggested by using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA). Objective functions are to minimize root mean squared error (RMSE) and relative RMSE between observed and computed values. The criteria for separation are two; the first one is to estimate more precisely the parameters of IDF curve and the second is to make a single IDF curve without non-continuous duration point. For this purpose 22 rainfall recording gauges operated by Korea Meteorological Administration are selected and three IDF curves that are used generally in South Korea are tested. The result shows that the IDF curve developed by Heo et al. (1999) would be the best of three tested IDF curves, and the suggested parameter estimation method using MOGA can compute more reliable parameters compared with empirical regression analysis.

  • An automatic calibration tool of Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF), Parameter Estimation (PEST) program, was applied at the Imha lake watershed to get optimal hydrological parameters of HSPF. Calibration of HSPF parameters was performed during 2004 ~ 2008 by PEST and validation was carried out to examine the model's ability by using another data set of 1999 ~ 2003. The calibrated HSPF parameters had tendencies to minimize water loss to soil layer by infiltration and deep percolation and to atmosphere by evapotranspiration and maximize runoff rate. The results of calibration indicated that the PEST program could calibrate the hydrological parameters of HSPF with showing 0.83 and 0.97 Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NS) for daily and monthly stream flow and -3% of relative error for yearly stream flow. The validation results also represented high model efficiency with showing 0.88 and 0.95, -10% relative error for daily, monthly, and yearly stream flow. These statistical values of daily, monthly, and yearly stream flow for calibration and validation show a 'very good' agreement between observed and simulated values. Overall, the PEST program was useful for automatic calibration of HSPF, and reduced numerous time and effort for model calibration, and improved model setup.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a novel method for evaluating forward osmosis (FO) membrane performances using a non-pressurized FO system. Basic membrane performance parameters including water (A) and solute (B) permeability coefficients and unique parameter for FO membrane such as the support layer structural parameter (S) were determined in two FO modes (i.e., active layer faces feed solution (AL-FS) and active layer faces draw solution (AL-DS)). Futhermore, these parameters were compared with those determined in a pressurized reverse osmosis (RO) system. Theoretical water flux was calculated by employing these parameters to a model that accounts for the effects of both internal and external concentration polarization. Water flux from FO experiment was compared to theoretical water fluxes for assessing the reliability of those parameters determined in three different operation modes (i.e., AL-FS FO, AL-DS FO, and RO modes). It is demonstrated that FO membrane performance parameters can be accurately measured in non-pressurized FO mode. Specifically, membrane performance parameters determined in AL-DS FO mode most accurately predict FO water flux. This implies that the evaluation of FO membrane performances should be performed in non-pressurized FO mode, which can prevent membrane compaction and/or defect and more precisely reflect FO operation conditions.

  • Stress history increases in penetration resistance due to the increase in residual horizontal stress of granular soil. This study analyzes the effect of stress history on the results of CPT and DMT from calibration chamber specimen in OC as well as NC state. Test results show that the normalized cone resistance by mean effective stress correlates well with the relative density and the state parameter, whereas the normalized cone resistance with regard to vertical effective stress is a little affected by stress history. The horizontal stress index($K_D$) in DMT more reflects the influence of stress history on granular soil than the dilatometer modulus($E_D$) and cone resistance($q_c$). The $K_D/K_0$, in which the effect of stress history on $K_D$ is compensated by the at-rest coefficient of earth pressure, $K_0$, is related to relative density, state parameter and the normalized cone resistance by mean effective stress. It is also observed that the normalized dilatometer modulus by mean effective stress($E_D/{\sigma_m}'$) is unique correlated with the state parameter, regardless of stress history.

  • Jeju island has a humid subtropical climate and this climate zone is expected to migrate northward toward the main land, Korea Peninsula, as temperature increases are accelerated. Vegetation type has been inevitably shifted along with the climatic change, having more subtropical species native in southeast Asia or even in Africa. With the forest composition shift, it becomes more important than ever to analyze the water balance of the forest wihth the ongoing as well as upcoming climate change. Here, we implemented the Ecosystem Demography Biosphere Model (ED2) by initializing the key variables using forest inventory data (diameter at breast height in 2012). Out of 10,000 parameter sets randomly generated from prior distribution distributions of each parameter (i.e., Monte-Carlo Method), we selected four behavioral parameter sets using remote-sensing data (LAI-MOD15A2H, GPP-MOD17A2H, and ET-MOD16A2, 8-days at 500-m during 2001-2005), and evaluated the performances using eddy-covariance carbon flux data (2012 Mar.-Sep. 30-min) and remote sensing data between 2006-2020. We simulated each of the four RCP scenarios (2.6, 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5) from four climate forcings (GFDL-ESM2M, HadGEM2-ES, IPSL-CM5A-LR, and MIROC5 from ISIMIP2b). Based on those 64 simulation sets, we estimate the changes in water balance resulting from the forest composition shift, and also uncertainty in the estimates and the sensitivity of the estimates to the parameters, climate forcings, and RCP scenarios.
