Catalytic oxidation characteristics of benzene as a VOC was investigated using a fixed bed reactor system over transition $metals/\gamma-Al_2O_3$ catalysts. As transition metals, eight metals including copper, nickel, manganese, iron etc. were adopted. The parametric tests were conducted at the reaction temperature range of $200\sim500^{\circ}C$, benzene concentration of $1,000\sim3,000$ ppm, and space velocity range of $5,000\sim60,000\;hr^{-l}$. The property analyses such as BET, SEM, XRD and the conversions of catalytic oxidation of VOC were examined. The experimental results showed that the conversion was increased with decreasing VOC concentration and space velocity. It was also found that $Cu/\gamma-Al_2O_3$ catalyst calcinated at $500^{\circ}C$ showed the highest activity for the oxidation of benzene and 15% metal loading was the optimum impregnation level.

This study was carried out to evaluate the concentration variations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the office environments located in a large urban area with respect to seasonality, smoking status, types of ventilation and heating. Indoor air sampling was undertaken in 37 and 30 offices in Daegu city during summer and winter, respectively. The VOC samples were collected using adsorbent tubes, and were determined by thermal desorption coupled with GC/MS analysis. The analytical method was validated for repeatability, method detection limits (MDL), and duplication precision. A total of 34 VOCs of environmental concern were determined, including 15 aromatics and 19 halogenated hydrocarbons. Average concentrations of BTEX appeared to 1.91 ppb, 22.98 ppb, 3.44 ppb, and 3.70 ppb, respectively. These values were relatively higher levels than those measured at homes and outdoor roadsides reported by other researches. In general, the concentrations of VOCs were higher in winter than summer, in smoking offices than non-smoking offices, in forced ventilation type than natural ventilation type, and in combustion heating than non-combustion heating offices. However, such differences were not always significant at a level of 0.05 by statistical tests (t-test and/or Mann-Whitney test) with some exceptions for BTEX and styrene. This study demonstrated that smoking status, ventilation type and presence of combustion sources indoors could be important factors on the elevated concentrations of some VOCs in the office environment.
The Protocol adopted in Sep. 1997 included the new Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78, which will enter into force on 19 May 2005. MARPOL Annex VI sets limits on sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from ship exhausts and prohibits deliberate emissions of volatile organic compound (VOCs) from oil tanker in port and oil terminal. This study was conducted to find out countermeasures for the new Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 and draw up a feasible management plan. The emission quantity of NOx and SOX from ships in Ulsan Port was calculated by U.S. EPA and Japan Marine Engineering emission factors of air pollutant from ship exhausts. In addition, volatile organic compound (VOCs) from oil tanker during the loading and discharging period, also calculated.
To perform a long-term ambient sampling study at a residential site, an air sampler was constructed to collect 24-hour integrated air samples suitable for the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis. It includes an esthetically acceptance due to proximity to homes, as fell as providing the required sampling specifications. The VOCs sampler accomodates four 5/8 "stainless steel(SS) traps packed with adsorbent(Tenax) and is capable of four flow rates in the range of 5 to 50 cc/min. Sintered metal filters(10 micrometer) were directly connected to the inlet of the trap adapters. Additional specifications include: 1) constructed of organically inert materials, 2) weatherproof, 3) battery operated, 4) collecting of VOCs at a breathing zone level, and 5) quiet operation with micro diaphragm pumps wrapped by the sponge. The pump/battery system was separated from the sampling shelter. Sound levels measured for this system were below permissible sound levels (NJDEP) at a residential site. The sampler has been successfully operated at both ground level in a residential area and on the roof of a one story elementary school.hool.
Volatile organic rompounds(VOCs) present in the VOCs-contaminated water are released to air while showering and their air concentrations depend on the shower parameters, resulting in the variation of the VOCs breath concentration. The present study evaluated the key shower parameters(water temperature and inhalation duration) that affect the inhalation exposure to air chloroform while showering, by determining chloroform breath concentration. The chloroform breath concentrations increased with water temperature and inhalation duration increase. The two inhalation exposure conditions which resulted in the greatest chloroform breath contentration difference were a 5 min-inhalation exposure with warm water and a 15 min-inhalation exposure with hot water. The chloroform breath concentration was almost three times higher after later exposure. The mathematical model analyzing the relationship between two key shower parameters and breath concentration normalized to water concentration fits quite Ivell with the experimental data at a probability of p : 0.0001.
Background: CAPSS missing evaporate emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from liquid cargo loading and unloading at ports. It needs to be supplemented to improve air quality management and allow more effective policy formulation. Objectives: In this study, the VOC emissions from the loading and unloading of liquid cargo at ports, which are not included in CAPSS, were estimated. The results of this study were compared and analyzed with the emission levels as described by CAPSS, confirming the need for managing VOC emissions from the loading and unloading of liquid cargo. Methods: Methodology provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was applied to estimate the VOC emissions from the loading and unloading of liquid cargo at ports. The types of liquid cargo loaded at unloaded at ports are diverse, but for this study emissions were estimated for 37 VOCs designated by the Ministry of Environment. Results: The estimated results for VOC emissions from liquid cargo loading and unloading at domestic ports was 112,079 tons/yr, which was confirmed to be 11% of the known CAPSS emissions. The highest emissions were found from the loading and unloading of naptha, and the port with the highest emissions was Ulsan Port. Conclusions: The results of the estimated VOC emissions from liquid cargo loading and unloading at ports confirmed the high emission levels. To protect the health of port workers and nearby residents, it is essential to manage the emission sources and undertake continuous research.

A method to detect 37 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in surface water was described based on headspace solid-phase micro extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. VOCs in water were vaporized for 30 min at 40 $^{\circ}C$ in a headspace vial and adsorbed on 85 ${\mu}m$ carboxen-polydimethylsiloxane. Under the established condition, the lowest quantification limit was 4.1-96 ng/L by using 4.0 mL water sample, and the relative standard deviation was less than 15% at concentrations of 0.05 and 0.50 ${\mu}g/L$. The detection limits meet lower concentration than 1/10 of the water quality criteria for VOCs established by the US EPA or Germany. The LOQ is a sensitivity which the monitoring for the establishing water quality criteria requires. When the proposed method was used to analyze the target compounds in sixteen surface water samples and total 16 VOCs were detected in surface water samples collected from Gum-River. Maximum concentrations of VOCs detected were not exceeded the EPA or Germany guidelines in any of the samples.

The emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are wastewater treatment plants. sanitary landfills, automobile industries, and so on. The VOCs are harmful to human beings because of their toxicity and carcinogenicity, and cause the serious air pollution problem producing ozone ($O_3$) as a result of photochemical reaction. To investigate the emission of VOCs from wastewater treatment plant, aeration basins at the City of Los Angeles' Hyperion Treatment Plant were selected and measured flux was compared with calculated flux. For compounds commonly associated with wastewater (DCM, TCM, PCE, UM, DCB, UND) and not expected in vehicle exhaust or ambient air coming off the ocean, concentrations immediately downwind of the aeration basins were a factor of ten or higher than those measured in the upwind air. The airborne flux of less degradable or non-biodegradable compounds, e.g., DCE, DCM, TCA, DCA, TCM, PCE, DCB, through an imaginary plane at the downwind side of the aeration basins was in agreement with the estimated flux from measured liquid phase concentrations. Henry's constant. aeration rate, and an assumption of bubble saturation. For several compounds (PCE, DCE, TCA), the ratio (measured flux/calculated flux) is almost unity.

The AOPs research defined by creating a sufficient amount of OH radicals from the dissolution of organic materials through photoxidation and research for a complete elimination of residual organic materials by membrane are actively ongoing. This research focuses on the hybrid processing of AOPs and M/F membrane to dissolve and eliminate organic chemicals in drinking water which are suspected of carcinogens. For this purpose, underground water was used as a source of drinking water for the hybrid processing of AOPs oxidation and M/F membrane, and a pilot plant test device was installed indoor. Carcinogenic chemicals of VOCs and pesticide were artificially mixed with the drinking water, which was then diluted close to natural water in order to examine treatment efficiency and draw optimal operation conditions. The samples used for this experiment include four chemicals phenol, chloroform, in VOCs and parathion, carbaryl in pesticide. As a result of the experiments conducted with simple, and compound solutions, the conditions to sufficiently dissolve and eliminate carcinogenic chemicals from the hybrid processing of where carcinogens were artificially added are : (hydrogen peroxide) prescribed solution 100 mg/L under pH 5.5~6.0, and the temperature $12{\sim}16^{\circ}C$, at the normal temperature and pressure. $d-O_3$ volume of 5.0 ppm and above and 30-40 minutes of reaction time are most appropriate and using MF/UF for membrane was ideal.
The handling process of car indoor air quality is composed of 2 steps of testing. First, assambly part is tested to find a source of car indoor VOCs. Second, cut sample of unit component is tested to find a source material of VOCs emission. If the source material of VOCs emission is found, it can reduce car and assembly part of VOCs by improving material. As cut sample testing has problem of emission from cut surface to find the source of VOCs, it needs to apply unit components testing method. The aim of study is to evaluate VOCs impact factor of unit components in assembly parts. ISO 12219-5 test method reflects not only material effect but also surface area effect by testing unit component without cutting. The unit components of doortrim and console, were tested by ISO12219-5. And it could figure what unit component is main source of VOCs in assembly. And quantity conversion Factor which gets by testing assembly and unit components can be used to make guideline of ISO 12219-5.
