  • One of the best important thing in data mining process is the quality of data used. When we perform the mining on data with excellent quality, the potential value of data mining can be improved. In this paper, we propose the data fusion technique for data enrichment that one phase can improve data quality in KDD process. We attempted to add k-NN technique to the regression technique, to improve performance of fusion technique through reduction of the loss of information. Simulations were performed to compare the proposed data fusion technique with the regression technique. As a result, the newly proposed data fusion technique is characterized with low MSE in continuous fusion variables.

  • The concentrations and wet deposition flux into the sea of heavy metals of precipitation in Pusan area were measured and estimated. The samples were collected by polyethylene bottle(30ι) from January to November in 1996, and heavy metals were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometer. The concentration order of heavy metals was Al >Fe >Zn >Pb >Mn >Cu >Ni >Cd >Co, and they were high at inland sites and low at coastal sites. The enrichment factors for some metals(Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd), based on crustal Al, were significantly greater than unity, and the order was Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu. This evidence suggests Cd and Pb are derived predominantly from non-crustal sources. Al, Fe and Mn contents showed good correlation with each other. Therefore this enrichment factor indicates similar geochemical behavior of these elements. The annual wet depositional flux(mg/ $m^2$ /yr) from Pl site was as follows: Al(121.1). Fe,(177.2), Zn(12.9), Mn(6.19), Pb(14.4), Cu(0.64), Ni(1.03), Cd(1.02) and Co(1.01).

  • The effects of addition of non degradable polymers, polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on the rate of enzymatic degradation of biodegradable poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) have been studied in term of surface structure. Since a component in multicomponent polymeric system has shown surface enrichment, PS and PMMA which have lower surface energy than PLLA were selected as a minor blend component (5 wt%). Enzymatic degradation was carried out at $37^{\circ}C$ and pH 8.5 in the aqueous solution of Proteinase K. Two blend systems, partially miscible (PS/PLLA) and immiscible (PMMA/PLLA), showed the surface enrichment of 4 and 2 times of PS and PMMA, respectively. From the weight loss profile data, the slow degradation rate of both blend films was observed. This indicates that PS or PMMA domains which exist at surface act as a retardant of enzymatic attack.

  • Increasing environmental concerns regarding the use of fossil fuels and global wanning have prompted researcher to investigate alternative fuels. The purpose of this study is to investigate the syngas production by biogas reforming using a compression spark ignition engine. The parametric screening studies were carried out according to the variations of oxygen enrichment rate, biogas $CO_2$ ratio, intake gas temperature, and engine revolution. When the oxygen enrichment rate and input gas temperature increased, hydrogen and carbon monoxide were increased. But the biogas $CO_2$ ratio and engine revolution increased, the syngas were reduced. For the reforming of methane 100% only, generation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide was 58% and 17%, respectively. However when the biogas $CO_2$ ratio was 40%, hydrogen and carbon monoxide concentration were about 20% each.

  • Prostate cancer is a highly prevalent disease in older men of the western world. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNA molecules that regulate gene expression via posttranscriptional inhibition of protein synthesis. To identify the diagnostic potential of miRNAs in prostate cancer, we downloaded the miRNA expression profile of prostate cancer from the GEO database and analysed the differentially expressed miRNAs (DE-miRNAs) in prostate cancerous tissue compared to non-cancerous tissue. Then, the targets of these DE-miRNAs were extracted from the database and mapped to the STRING and KEGG databases for network construction and pathway enrichment analysis. We identified a total of 16 miRNAs that showed a significant differential expression in cancer samples. A total of 9 target genes corresponding to 3 DE-miRNAs were obtained. After network and pathway enrichment analysis, we finally demonstrated that miR-20 appears to play an important role in the regulation of prostate cancer onset. MiR-20 as single biomarker or in combination could be useful in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. We anticipate our study could provide the groundwork for further experiments.

  • The gift program developed at KEDI is based on Enrichment Triad Model. The output of the students who completed Enrichment Triad Model has to be new and useful in creative knowledge. However, most of the students' output has been the summaries of what is learned that they were not creatively developed as experts' would be. Thus, this study follows the KEDI's guideline for developing gift program so that it could give suggestion on how to develop students' research skills when developing and applying gift program.

  • Alpha track analysis for the determination of the trace amount of alpha emitting nuclides in a very small particle was performed as an efficient and powerful technique during safeguard inspection. Metal particles with well-defined spherical shape, size and isotopic compositions as a reference material were used to correlate the number of tracks or track diameter with an isotopic composition eventually to identify the uranium enrichment in the environmental swipe samples. Slopes in the number of tracks versus the exposure time curve provide a simple insight into the uranium enrichment of an unknown particle. Low enriched uranium metal particles result in slopes still steeper than the depleted or natural uranium metal particles. In addition, a linear relationship between track diameter and particle size Is thought to be a useful first stage analytical tool as an efficient and convenient inspection guide. The significance of the simple linear model was also judged using the usual statistical tests.

  • In this paper, we describe a computer program, iBEST (inverse Burnup ESTimator), that we developed to accurately estimate the burnup histories of spent nuclear fuels based on sample measurement data. The burnup history parameters include initial uranium enrichment, burnup, cooling time after discharge from reactor, and reactor type. The program uses algebraic equations derived using the simplified burnup chains of major actinides for initial estimations of burnup and uranium enrichment, and it uses the ORIGEN-S code to correct its initial estimations for improved accuracy. In addition, we newly developed a stable bisection method coupled with ORIGEN-S to correct burnup and enrichment values and implemented it in iBEST in order to fully take advantage of the new capabilities of ORIGEN-S for improving accuracy. The iBEST program was tested using several problems for verification and well-known realistic problems with measurement data from spent fuel samples from the Mihama-3 reactor for validation. The test results show that iBEST accurately estimates the burnup history parameters for the test problems and gives an acceptable level of accuracy for the realistic Mihama-3 problems.

  • As it is known, uranium enrichment is carried out on industrial scale by means of multistage separation facilities, i.e., separation cascades in which gas centrifuges (GCs) are connected in series and parallel. Design and construction of these facilities require significant investment. So, the problem of calculation and optimization of cascade working parameters is still relevant today. At the same time, in many cases, the minimum unit cost of a product is related to the cascade having the smallest possible number of separation elements/GCs. Also, in theoretical studies, it is often acceptable to apply as an efficiency criterion the minimum total flow to supply cascade stages instead of the abovementioned minimum unit cost or the number of separation elements. In this article, cascades with working parameter of a single GC changing from stage to stage are optimized by two of the abovementioned performance criteria and are compared. The results obtained allow us to make a conclusion about their differences.

  • Chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols was measured at 4 sites in Pusan. All the samples were collected with a high volume air sampler from January to October 1996, to analyze major ions and heavy metals. Dominant ions of aerosols were S $O_4$$^{2-}$ in anion and N $a^{+}$ in cation. Sulfate, nitrate and ammonium ions in aerosols showed high enrichment factor to soil and seawater composition. The concentrations of heavy metals in aerosols was lowest at the site PI near the coast. The lowest concentrations of major ions and heavy metals mainly appeared in August, probably due to scavenging by frequent rains. Especially, the concentrations of total suspended particulate matter(TSP) and heavy metals in aerosols showed good correlations in Pusan. Based on crustal Al, enrichment factors for some metals(Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd) in aerosols were significantly greater than unity, and the order was Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu. This evidence suggests that Cd and Pb are derived predominantly from non-crustal sources.s.
