The objective of this study was to investigate potential usage of environmentally friendly building materials, liquid mortar and dry cement mortar mixed with charcoal, based on the test of their physical and chemical properties. From the test results of physical and chemical properties of the liquid mortar mixed with charcoal, liquid mortar containing over 20% of charcoal, the consistency viscosity and the non-volatile content met a standard requirement. Drying time was delayed with increase in charcoal contents in the liquid mortar, however they were fully cured within 60 minutes in all treated levels. Other properties were acceptable at standard requirement. From the results, it was found that the proper charcoal addition level to the liquid mortar was 25%. In the results on dry cement, it was found that samples containing 5% of charcoal showed the maximum compressive strength, whereas samples containing over 20% of charcoal did not reach the minimum requirement of KS standard. Water retention ability constantly increased as the charcoal ratio increased. The conventional dry cement mortar adsorbed 59.5% of it, in the test of adsorption rate on ammonia gas, whereas cement mortar containing 10% of charcoal showed 71.6% of ammonia gas adsorption.
The objective of present study is to investigate the effect of granulated blast furnace slag (GBS) as partial substitution of natural sand on behaviour of cement mortar. For this, the methods of factorial design with water cement (w/c) ratio and incorporation percentages of GBS as replacement of natural fine aggregate i.e., GBS(%) as factors are followed. The levels of factor w/c ratio are fixed at 0.4, 0.45, and 0.5 and the levels of factor GBS(%) are kept fixed as 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%. The compressive strength (CS) of mortar after 3, 7, 14, 28, 56 and 90 days, and water absorption (WA) are chosen as responses of the study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of experimental results has been carried out and those are illustrated by ANOVA tables, main effect and interaction plots. The results of study depict that the selected factors have substantial influence on the strength and WA of mortar. However, the interaction of factors has no substantial impact on CS and WA of mixes.

Recently on construction sites, there is increased use of concrete with large quantities of blast-furnace slag(BS) admixture replacements, for purposes of reducing CO2 created from cement, one of the ingredients of concrete. But such high-BS fineness changes can have a huge effect on the quality of mortar and concrete. Therefore in this study an experiment was conducted in which liquidity and intensity of mortar depending on an artificially-applied change in fineness degree at degree 7. The results, though subtle, were that the larger the fineness degree, liquidity increased and air quantity decreased, and compression and flexural strength increased.

In this study, the physical and chemical properties of mortar are evaluated by micro-analysis, taking into account the substitution rate(20%, 30%, and 40%) of zeolite with porous properties and active hwangtoh. First, the physical and chemical properties of zeolite and active hwangtoh are reviewed to confirm that the specific surface area of those is similar with ordinary portland cement, and the main chemical composition is SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, etc.. So, it is thought that they have the properties of pozolan reactive materials. As the results of the strength test considering the amount of substitution based on that of cement, It is confirmed that strength decreases with the increase of the replacement amount of zeolite and active hwangtoh, and the strength of mortar with replacement rate of 20% is higher than OPC mortar. It is confirmed that the amount of porosity is increased due to chemical properties of zeolite and active hwangtoh, and in particular, the size of the pore is greater than 1㎛ in mortar mixed with active hwangtoh.

It's important to study about suitable substitutional material of expensive silica fume because it used widely for silica fume as a high-strength mortar binding agent. The main purpose of this study is to check which is the most efficient binder for the expensive silica fume's alternative material. And this study also present basic data about to make high-strength mortar when we use alternative material instead of silica fume through research outcome. Also writers analzed flow properties respectively, so it was founded out the substitutional goods fare like meta-kaolin, HMBA which are less expensive than silica fume because they are in domestic enough.

This study is to compare and analyze the strength, drying shrinkage and carbonation properties of lightweight aggregate mortar using recycling water as prewetting water and mixing water. The flow, compressive strength, split tensile strength, drying shrinkage and carbonation depth of lightweight aggregate mortar with recycling water were measured. As test results, the mortar flow was similar in all mixes regardless of the recycling water content. The compresseive strength of the RW5 mix with 5% recycling water as prewetting water and mixing water was the highest value, about 53.9 MPa after 28 days. In addition, the tensile strength of lightweight mortar was about 3.4 to 3.8 MPa, indicating 7 to 9% of the compressive strength value regardless of recycling water content. In the case of drying shrinkage, the RW2.5 mix using 2.5% recycling water showed the lowest shrinkage rate as about 0.107% at 56 days. The drying shrinkage of the plain mix without recycling water was relatively higher than the RW2.5 and RW5 mix. The RW5 mix showed lowest carbonation depth compared to other mixes. In this study, the RW5 lightweight aggregate mortar with 5% recycling water exhibits excellent compressive strength and carbonation resistance. Therefore, it is considered that if the recycling water, a by-product of the concrete industry, is properly used as prewetting water and mixing water of lightweight mortar and concrete, it will be possible to increase the recycling rate of the by-product and contribute to improve the property of lightweitht aggregate mortar and concrete.

According to the development and use of self-consolidating concrete in field, interest in material properties of early-age concrete is rising. Setting time with hydration process of cement is one of significant indicator to evaluate the early-age material properties of concrete, various nondestructive methods including penetration resistance measurement have been proposed to estimate setting time. This study performed an experimental approach to evaluate setting time delay in mortar adding superplasticizer using electrical resistivity measurement. For this purpose, total nine types of mortar samples were prepared, and its electrical resistivity was monitoring during 24h after mixing. From the experimental result, rising time of electrical resistivity was used to evaluate setting delay of mortar, and penetration resistance was also measured for comparison. In addition, dynamic elastic modulus and compressive strength of 1day mortar were measured to investigate a possibility the use of electrical resistivity measurement for evaluation of early-age material properties.
The report of an investigation into the performance of mortar specimens made with recycled fine aggregate (RA) exposed to sodium sulfate solution for 360 days is presented in this paper. Mechanical properties of mortar specimens such as visual examination, compressive strength, expansion and mass loss were periodically monitored. From the test results, it was found that mortar specimens with higher replacement levels of Rh exhibited poor performance in sodium sulfate solution. However, compared to mortar specimens without RA, those with lower replacement levels of RA (up to 50% by mass) was more resistant to sulfate attack. Through the x-ray diffraction analysis, it was confirmed that the main products causing sulfate deterioration in RA mortar specimens were the formation of gypsum and thaumasite.
This paper describes the design of a new interlocking masonry system, the production of designed interlocking units and mechanical properties of interlocked masonry assemblages with mortar. In this proposed system, units have horizontal and vertical locks to integrate the units to the wall and have a channel to enable the use of horizontal reinforcements in the wall. Using these units, unfilled, filled or reinforced walls can be constructed with or without mortar. In the production of the interlocking units, it was decided to use foamed concrete. 12 trial productions have been carried out at different mix proportions to obtain the optimum concrete mix. At the end of the mentioned productions, the units were produced with foam concrete which is selected as the most suitable in terms of compressive strength and specific gravity. Then, axial compression, diagonal tension and bed joint shear tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties of the interlocked masonry assemblages with mortar. Results from the tests showed that interlocks designed to strengthen the system against shear stresses by creating discontinuity throughout the joints have been successful to achieve their aim. Obtained data will enable structural analysis of walls to be constructed with these new units.

This paper summarizes the analysis of granite microfines from California for use in portland cement concrete. For reference, the granite microfines were compared to microfines used in previous International Center for Aggregates Research(ICAR) projects. The particle shape characteristics, based on the packing density results, were assessed and apparent clay content, based on the methylene blue value test, was evaluated. Also, the physical properties of the microfines were confirmed in self-consolidating mortar mixtures.
