  • Purpose: A threshing machine for shatter-resistant sesame was designed and developed in this study. Methods: Two types of sesame (shatter-resistant and conventional) were tested using the developed sesame threshing system. Three types of serrated bars were designed and evaluated through performance tests, in terms of the ratio of unthreshed sesame. Results: In the case of conventional sesame, the ratio of unthreshed sesame did not show any difference with bar type or cylinder rotation speed. For shatter-resistant sesame, however, the ratio of unthreshed sesame decreased with increased cylinder rotating speed for all three types of bar. Conclusions: These results are useful for the construction and utilization of an efficient threshing harvester. The type-L bar showed the best result in the energy equation.

  • In this paper, pneumatic valve which consists of valve body, valve controller, nozzle and a multi-bender PZT actuator was suggested and fabricated. The fabricated pneumatic valve was experimented for performance evaluation. From the experimental results, we know that the flow rate of the suggested valve is 23 lpm at the pressure difference of 1bar and the maximum flow rate is 30 lpm at the pressure difference of 4 bar. The flow rates after endurance test of 9.8 million were 22.57 lpm and 28.62 lpm at the pressure difference of 1bar and 4bar, respectably. Finally, it was verified that the B10 life of the suggested pneumatic valve is over 50 million.

  • Alcohol-based solvents including ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) are investigated instead of isopropanol (IPA), which is a common solvent for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), as an alternative solvent for preparing the catalyst slurry with PTFE binder. As a result, the performance at 0.2 A/㎠ from the single cells from using catalyst slurries based on EtOH and TBA showed very similar value to that from the slurry using IPA, which implies the EtOH and TBA can be used as a solvent for the catalyst slurry. It is also confirmed by the very close values of the total resistance of the membrane electrode assemblies from the slurries using different solvents. In the energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) image, the shape of crack and dispersion of PTFE are changed according to the vapor pressure of the solvent.

  • In this study, we demonstrated that, although hydrogen molecules can be adsorbed onto the adsorbent such as MOF and MC itself, the loading of noble metal such as Pt is necessary to enhance the $H_2$ storage capacity since $H_2$ molecules can be dissociatively adsorbed on Pt metal and migrated to high-surface-area adsorbent via the primary spillover. In addition, the hybrid material have been prepared coupling MOF-5 with Pt/MC through carbon bridges formed by sucrose polymerization/carbonization. That this material showed the highest $H_2$ uptake at room temperature and about 100 bar is believed to be associated with the secondary spillover effect. Thus, such a strategy is very promising in developing $H_2$ storage technology using porous adsorbents. However, further experiments should be carried out to explore the choice of bridge carbon, the hybridization method, the dispersion technique of noble metals, etc.

  • In the field of the $CO_2$ absorption process using aqueous ammonia, the effects of regeneration pressure and temperature on $CO_2$ absorption performances of the aqueous ammonia were investigated. The absorbents were prepared by dissolving ammonium carbonate solid in water to grant the resulted solution 0.5 $CO_2$ loading ($mol\;CO_2/mol\;NH_3$) and various ammonia concentration (14, 20, 26 and 32 wt%). As-prepared absorbents were regenerated at high pressure and temperature (over $120^{\circ}C$ and 6 bar) before the absorption test. The absorption test was carried out by injecting the simulated gas that contains 12 vol% of $CO_2$ into a bubbling reactor. The introduction of 26 wt% of the ammonia concentration for $CO_2$ absorption test resulted in the higher absorption capacities than other experimental conditions. In particular, when the absorbents with 26 wt% of the ammonia were regenerated at $150^{\circ}C$ and 14 bar, the highest absorption capacity, $45ml\;CO_2/g$, was obtained. According to the analysis of absorbents using acid-base titration, the ammonia loss during the regeneration of the absorbents with a fixed ammonia concentration decreased as the regeneration pressure increased, while it increased as the regeneration temperature increased. In the condition of fixed regeneration pressure and temperature, as expected, the ammonia loss increased as the ammonia concentration increased. The measured $CO_2$ loadings and ammonia concentrations of absorbents were compared to the values calculated by Electrolyte NRTL model in Aspen Plus.

  • The energy dissipation of coal under dynamic loads is a major issue in geomechanics and arising extensive concerns recently. In this study, dynamic loading tests of coal were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system, the characteristics of dynamic behavior and energy dissipation of coal were analyzed, and the mechanism of energy dissipation was discussed based on the fracture processes of coal under dynamic loads. Experimental results indicate that the energy dissipation of coal under dynamic loads has a positive linear correlation with both incident energy and dynamic compressive strength, and the correlation coefficients between incident energy, dynamic compressive strength and the energy dissipation rate are 0.74 and 0.98, respectively. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that higher level of stress leads to greater energy released during unstable crack propagation, thus resulting in larger energy dissipation rate of coal under dynamic loads. At last, a semi-empirical energy dissipation model is proposed for describing the positive relationship between dissipated energy and stress.

  • In this study, the hydrogen chloride removal using K-based dry sorbents ($K_2CO_3/Al_2O_3$, KEPRI, Korea) was studied with varying the pressure in a fixed bed reactor (15 cm tall bed with 0.5 cm I.d.). Working temperature was $400^{\circ}C$ and feed gas concentration was 750 ppm (HCl vol%, $N_2$ balance). The chloride sorption capacity of sorbent increases with increasing pressure (1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 bar). Also, after forming KCl crystal by reaction with $K_2CO_3$ and HCl, owing to the strong bonding energy, sorbent regeneration was practically impossible. Its optical, physical and chemical characterizations were evaluated by SEM, EDAX, BET, TGA and XRD. At $400^{\circ}C$ and 20 bar condition, working condition for the dehalogenation process after gasification, K-based dry sorbent showed high HCl sorption capacity and HCl/$N_2$ separation performances comparing with Ca-based and Mg-based dry sorbents.

  • Almost all of the natural gas consumed in South Korea is compressed into very high pressure for the transportation through the underground pipelines, then reduced in pressure regulation stations before delivery to the consumer. For pressure reduction, expansion valves have been used due to the simple and effective installation, but recover none of the energy in the gas during compression. Hence, turbo-expanders are proposed instead of the valves to accomplish the same pressure letdown function and recover some of the compression energy in the form of shaft work converting into electric powers. Here we have theoretically calculated the electric powers at the pressure reduction from 68.7 bar to 23 bar (which are the average values taken at the inlet and outlet points of the expansion valve in medium-pressure regulation stations) according to the inlet conditions of temperature and flow rate. The natural gas is considered as two cases of a pure methane and the mixture of hydrocarbons with a very small amount of nitrogen, and the Peng-Robinson equation of state is employed for the calculation of required thermodynamic properties. The electric energy is recovered as much as 1596 MW(methane) and 1567 MW(mixture) based on the total supply of natural gas in 2013.

  • In high rise buildings that utilize precast large panel system for construction, the shear wall provides strength and stiffness during earthquakes. The performance of a wall panel system depends mainly on the type of connection used to transfer the forces from one wall element to another wall element. This paper presents an experimental investigation on different types of construction detailing of the precast wall to wall vertical connections under reverse cyclic loading. One of the commonly used connections in India to connect wall to wall panel is the loop bar connection. Hence for this study, three types of wet connections and one type of dry connection namely: Staggered loop bar connection, Equally spaced loop bar connection, U-Hook connection, and Channel connection respectively were used to connect the precast walls. One third scale model of the wall was used for this study. The main objective of the experimental work is to evaluate the performance of the wall to wall connections in terms of hysteretic behaviour, ultimate load carrying capacity, energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation, ductility, viscous damping ratio, and crack pattern. All the connections exhibited similar load carrying capacity. The U-Hook connection exhibited higher ductility and energy dissipation when compared to the other three connections.
