  • The paper describes the vibration characteristics of the mechanical system consisting of a uniform Timoshenko beam with a guided mass and an elastic spring support. The free end of the beam does not rotate and the spring attatched to the guided mass is elastically restrained against translation. The guided mass is assumed to be a rigid body having a finite size, but not a mass point as it has been assumed so far. The effect of magnitudes, rotary inertia and the size of the guided mass on the vibration characteristics is fully investigated by the numerical simulation using FEM and experiment. In order to verify the eigenvalue sensitivity for considered system, comparison exact solutions with FEM is conducted, and a good agreement between two solutions is also highlighted.

  • The dynamic behavior of CANDU nuclear fuel channel was analyzed by the use of 3-dimensional finite element method, under the various fault conditions such as a fault in the end fitting support and the removal/migration of the garter spring in the fuel channel, in order to predict the dynamic behavior for a degraded symptoms of CANDU nuclear fuel channel. Moreover, the frequency response analysis for possible fault conditions was also peformed considering the effects of the pressure tube vibration and flow-induced vibration by the coolant flow. From the analysis of the frequency responses, defects in the garter spring have influenced the changes of 2nd and 3rd modes and all the important modes are varied for the failure in the journal bearing in the end fitting body.

  • This paper deals with the buckling loads of column with rotation end restricted by rotational spring. The ordinary differential equations governing the buckling loads of such column is derived as nondimensional forms, and also its boundary conditions are derived. The buckled column model is based on the classical Bemoulli-Euler beam theory. The Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method are used to perform the integration of the differential equations and to determine the eigenvalue. The numerical methods developed herein for the buckling loads of the such column are found to be efficient and reliable. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be practically utilized in the structural engineering field.

  • This study explores the free vibrations of tapered column with hinged end restricted by rotational spring. The ordinary differential equation governing the free vibration of such column is derived as nondimensional form in which three kinds of cross-sectional shape are considered. In order to obtain the natural frequencies of column, the governing differential equation is solved by numerical procedures. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be practically utilized in the structural and the vibration control fields.

  • This study presents the long-term variability of spring precipitation over the Korean peninsula. It is found that the significant interdecadal change in the spring precipitation has occurred around year 1991. Over the Korean peninsula the precipitation for the post-1991 period increased by about 30 mm per year in CMAP and station-measured data compared to the precipitation prior to year 1991. Due to an increased baroclinicity during the later period, the low-level negative pressure anomaly has developed with its center over northern Japan. Korea is situated at the western end of the negative pressure anomaly, receiving moisture from westerly winds and producing more precipitation. Also, we estimate the change in the near future (years 2020~2040) spring precipitation using six best performing Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 3 (CMIP3) models. These best model ensemble mean shows that spring precipitation is anticipated to increase by about 4% due to the strengthened westerlies accompanied by the northwestern enhancement of the North Pacific subtropical high.

  • Optical fibers, for splice, are stripped of their plastic coatings with a plastic stripper and cut off at the end. Therefore, stripped fibers often receive accidental damages and sustain small flaws or cracks. As a result, the breaking strength of a fiber splice made under normal conditions is reduced to about 0.4∼1 ㎏ on the average, nearly one-tenth of the fiber's strength. This makes it necessary to reinforce the splice. One of the most practical and reliable methods for optical fiber splicing is fusion splicing, comprising the steps of tripping the plastic coatings from the two fiber ends to be splice, placing the two bare fiber ends in an end-to-end position, and of fusion splicing, such as are fusion. Generally, steel bar (SB) sleeve is used to reinforce this fusion-splicing region. However, this type of sleeve has a critical defect to keep optical lose after bent by a sudden load. New type of composite spring (CS) sleeve is developed to make up for the weak points in the SB sleeve. This sleeve has an effect on restoration to the original state after eliminating the bending load. The optical spectrum analyzes results show the availability of reinforcement for the fusion splicing optical fiber using small diameter composite springs under the various loading conditions.

  • In order to avoid excessive vibration, it is required to carry out a vibration analysis of heat-exchanger/nuclear-reactor at the design stage. Information of eigen-frequency in the vibration problem is required to evaluate safety of heat-exchange/nuclear reactor. This paper describes a numerical method, Galerkin's method, to solve the eigenvalue problem occurred in a cantilever beam. The beam is restrained with added mass and spring at the free end or a node point of a mode shape. The numerical results of eigen-frequency were compared with simple analytical and experimental results given by simple approach and simple test, respectively. It is found that Galerkin's method is applicable to estimate the eigen-frequency of the cantilever beam. The frequencies become lower with increasing the added mass and the frequencies increase with the spring force. It is shown the heavy added mass has a role of support on the flexible tube. The eigen-frequency of the first mode, for the system with the added mass mounted at the free end, can be calculated by the approximate analytical method existing with more or less accuracy.

  • Metal waste generated from the pyroprocessing of 10 MtU of spent fuel was classified by comparing the specific activity of a relevant radionuclide with the limit value of the specific activity specified in the Korean acceptance criteria for a lowand intermediate-level waste repository. A Korean Optimized Fuel Assembly design with a 17${\times}$17 array, an initial enrichment of 4.5 weight-percent, discharge burn-up of 55 GWD/MtU, and a 10-year cooling time was considered. Initially, the mass and volume of each structural component of the assembly were calculated in detail, and a source term analysis was subsequently performed using ORIGEN-S for these components. An activation cross-section library generated by the KENO-VI/ORIGEN-S module was utilized for top-end and bottom-end pieces. As a result, an Inconel grid plate, a SUS plenum spring, a SUS guide tube subpart, SUS top-end and bottom-end pieces, and an Inconel top-end leaf spring were determined to be unacceptable for the Gyeongju low- and intermediate-level waste repository, as these waste products exceeded the acceptance criteria. In contrast, a Zircaloy grid plate and guide tube can be placed in the Gyeongju repository. Non-contaminated Zircaloy cladding occupying 76% of the metal waste was found to have a lower level of specific activity than the limit value. However, Zircaloy cladding contaminated by fission products and actinides during the decladding process of pyroprocessing was revealed to have 52 and 2 times higher specific activity levels than the limit values for alpha and $^{90}Sr$, respectively. Finally, it was found that 88.7% of the metal waste from the 17${\times}$17 Korean Optimized Fuel Assembly design should be disposed of in a deep geological repository. Therefore, it can be summarized that separation technology with a higher decontamination factor for transuranics and strontium should be developed for the efficient management of metal waste resulting from pyroprocessing.
