A Study on the Phase Noise Improvement of Oscillator using Dielectric-rod loaded Cavity Resonators with HIS End-plates (고온초전도체와 유전체 삽입 공동 공진기를 이용한 발진기의 위상잡음 개선에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, an oscillator using dielectric-rod loaded cavity resonators with HTS(High Temperature Superconductor) end-plates was presented. It was operated at X-band. A two port cavity resonator was incorporated into a basic feedback loop oscillator configuration. A rutile loaded cavity resonator with HTS thin film end-plates was used to provide the quality factor between $10^4$ and $10^6$. A parallel feedback oscillator was constructed with a dielectric loaded cavity resonator, an amplifier, and a directional coupler. At 300 K, the experimental results showed the phase noise of -108 dBc/Hz at a 100 kHz offset frequency. At 26 K, the results was -118.8 dBc/Hz at same offset frequency.

Simplified Design Procedure for Reinforced Concrete Columns Based on Equivalent Column Concept

  • Axially loaded reinforced concrete columns are hardly exist in practice due to the development of some bending moments. These moments could be produced by gravity loads or the lateral loads. First, the current paper presents a detailed analysis on the overall structural behavior of 15 eccentrically loaded columns as well as one concentrically loaded control one. Columns bent in either single curvature or double curvature modes are tested experimentally up to failure under the effect of different end eccentricities combinations. Three end eccentricities ratio were studied, namely, 0.1b, 0.3b and 0.5b, where b is the column width. Second, an expression correlated the decay in the normalized axial capacity of the column and the acting end eccentricities was developed based on the experimental results and then verified against the available formula. Third, based on the equivalent column concept, the equivalent pin-ended columns were obtained for columns bent in either single or double curvature modes. And then, the effect of end eccentricity ratio was correlated to the equivalent column length. Finally, a simplified design procedure was proposed for eccentrically loaded braced column by transferring it to an equivalent axially loaded pin-ended slender column. The results of the proposed design procedure showed comparable results against the results of the ACI 318-14 code.

Modeling of fiber pullout behaviors of stiff fiber reinforced cementitious composites

  • This paper presents numerical studies of stiff fiber pullout behaviors of fiber reinforced cementitious composites based on a progressive damage model. The ongoing debonding process is simulated. Interfacial stress distribution for different load levels is analyzed. A parametric study, including bond strength and the homogeneity index on the pullout behaviors is carried out. The numerical results indicate that the bond stress decreases gradually from loaded end to embedded end along fiber-cement interface. The debonding initially starts from loaded end and propagates to embedded end as load increasing. The embedded length and bond strength affect the load-loaded end displacement curves significantly. The numerical results have a general agreement with the experimental investigation.

  • Fission product release (FPR) assessment for End Fitting Failure (EFF) in CANDU reactor loaded with CANFLEX-natural uranium (NU) fuel bundles has been peformed. The predicted results are compared with those for the reactor loaded with standard 37-element bundles. The total channel I-131 release at the end of transient for EFF accident is calculated to be 380.8 TBq and 602.9 TBq for the CANFLEX bundle and standard bundle channel cases, respectively. They are 4.9% and 7.9% of the total inventory, respectively. The lower total releases of the CANFLEX bundle O6 channel are attributed to the lower initial fuel temperatures caused by the lower linear element power of the CANFLEX bundle compared with the standard bundle.

Design of Compact Series-fed Dipole Pair Antenna with End-loaded Rectangular Patches (사각형 패치가 종단에 장하된 소형 직렬 급전 다이폴 쌍 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, a design of a compact series-fed dipole pair(SDP) antenna with end-loaded rectangular patches is presented. In order to reduce the lateral size of a conventional SDP antenna, rectangular patches are end-loaded to the two dipole elements of the SDP antenna and a grooved ground plane is used by adding a patch at both ends of the ground plane. The effects of varying the length and width of the rectangular patches on the antenna performance such as input reflection coefficient are investigated. An optimized compact SDP antenna covering a frequency band ranging from 1.7 GHz to 2.7 GHz is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate. The total width of the fabricated prototype of the proposed antenna is reduced by approximately 14.3% compared to the conventional SDP antenna. Experimental results show that the antenna presents a 48.7% bandwidth in the range of 1.68-2.76 GHz and a stable gain of 5.6-6.0 dBi with minimal degradation. Moreover, a front-to-back ratio is improved by about 0.7 to 7.4 dB.

Simplified method to design laterally loaded piles with optimum shape and length

  • Optimum shape and length of laterally loaded piles can be obtained with different optimization techniques. In particular, the Fully Stress Design method (FSD) is an optimality condition that allows to obtain the optimum shape of the pile, while the optimum length can be obtained through a transversality condition at the pile lower end. Using this technique, the structure is analysed by finite elements and shaped through the FSD method by contemporarily checking that the transversality condition is satisfied. In this paper it is noted that laterally loaded piles with optimum shape and length have some peculiar characteristics, depending on the type of cross-section, that allow to design them with simple calculations without using finite element analysis. Some examples illustrating the proposed simplified design method of laterally loaded piles with optimum shape and length are introduced.

  • The effect of end restraints for adjoining members is the different variables influencing the column ultimate strength and the behavior. The propose of this study is to analyze eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete columns with the end restraind effect having rectangular cross-section and general boundary conditions. Accordingly, this investigation are to construct a typical analytical model of the reinforced concrete columns with general end boundary conditions. The mechanical components of the analytical model are to be rationally defined the actual behavior as possible, and the different variables influencing the behavior and the ultimate strength of the reinforced concrete columns are investigated by using a parametric study.

Application of FBG Sensors on a Cantilever Beam for Analyzing Behavior of Laterally Loaded Piles (실내 모형실험을 통한 수평재하 말뚝의 거동측정을 위한 FBG 센서의 적용성 평가)

  • Analysis of the behavior of a laterally loaded pile is important in the design of critical civil structures. Recently, the electric strain gauge has been widely used to measure the strains along the pile. The electric strain gauge, due to lack of durability, is inappropriate in the use of long-term measurements. Herein, the feasibility of implementing the FBG sensor was investigated using a cantilever-type calibrator in laboratory. A special calibrating tool called "cantilever-calibrator" was used to calibrate the FBG sensors. The calibrator consists of a special calibration beam, a holding-clamp at one end of the beam, and a micrometer on the other end. Three FBG sensors were installed on the calibration beam. The strains measured by FBG sensors were compared with those calculated theoretically using cantilever beam theory. The calibration factor of FBG sensors were suggested to compensate the difference between measured and calculate strains.
