  • A numerical simulation of a 2-dimensional tidal flow in a shallow sea was performed using the frequency domain finite element method. In this study, to overcome the inherent problems of a time domain model which requires high eddy viscosity and small time steps to insure numerical stability, the harmonic function incorporated with the linearized function of governing equations was applied. Calculations were carried out using the developed tidal model(TIDE) in a rectangular channel of lOm(depth) X 4km (width) X 25km(length) under the condition of tidal waves entering the channel closed at one end for both with and without bottom friction damping. The predicted velocities and water levels at different points of the channel were in close agreement with less than 1 % error between the numerical and analytical solutions. The results showed that the characteristics of the tidal flow were greatly affected by the magnitude of tidal elevation forcing, and not by on surface friction, wind, or the linear bottom friction when the value was less than 0.01. For the optimum size of grid to obtain a consistent solution, the ratio between the length of the maximum grid and the tidal wave length should be less than 0.0018. It was concluded that the finite element tidal model(TIDE) developed in this study could handle the numerical simulation of tidal flows for more complex geometrical conditions.

  • In this paper, the dynamic controller design problem of a redundant planar 2-dof parallel manipulator is studied. Using the Euler-Lagrange equation, we formulate the dynamic model of the parallel manipulator in the joint space and propose an augmented PD controller with forward dynamic compensation for the parallel manipulator. By formulating the controller in the joint space, we eliminate the complex computation of the Jacobian matrix of joint angles with end-effector coordinate. So with less computation, our controller is easier to implement, and a shorter sampling period can be achieved, which makes the controller more suitable for high-speed motion control. Furthermore, with the combination of static friction model and viscous friction model, the active joint friction of the parallel manipulator is studied and compensated in the controller. Based on the dynamic parameters of the parallel manipulator evaluated by direct measurement and identification, motion control experiments are implemented. With the experiments, the validity of the dynamic model is proved and the performance of the controller is evaluated. Experiment results show that, with forward dynamic compensation, the augmented PD controller can improve the tracking performance of the parallel manipulator over the simple PD controller.

  • SIP(Soil cement Injected Precast pile) that inserts a precast pile after injecting a cement paste into a boring has been applied rapidly through the change of construction circumstances. But there isnt any logical equation of a bearing capacity fitted to SIP yet. So Meyerhof equation has mainly been used to predict a bearing capacity in a design stage instead. But it has shortcomings such as lack of confidence because it has derived not from a theory but from an experience obtained from the result of SPT (Standard Penetration Test) and because a penetration depth tends to be deeper by an excessive design that depends on an end bearing capacity of a pile more than a skin frictional resistance. In this study, thereupon, a direct shear test in the laboratory was performed to both SM and SC soils in variable conditions to verify skin friction properties for the purpose of presenting some reasons capable of reducing penetration depths. Through the tests, soil to soil of SM in cohesion, rough panel to soil of SM in friction angle and soil to soil of SM in shear strength tended to be high. And a shear strength increased as its total unit weight increased in all cases.

  • It has been argued that fracture energy of composite laminates depends on their thickness and number of layers. In this paper a modified direct energy balance approach (DEBA) has been developed to evaluate the mode-II shear fracture energy for E-glass/Epoxy laminates from finite element model at an arbitrary thickness. This approach considers friction and damage/plasticity deformations using cohesive zone modeling (CZM) and nonlinear finite element modeling. The presence of compressive stress and resulting friction was argued to be a possible cause for the thickness dependency of fracture energy. In the finite element modeling, CZM formulation has been developed with bilinear cohesive constitutive law combined with friction consideration. Also ply element have been developed with shear plastic damage model. Modified direct energy balance approach has been proposed for estimation of mode-II shear fracture energy. Experiments were performed on laminates of glass epoxy specimens for characterization of material parameters and determination of mode-II fracture energies for different thicknesses. Effect of laminate thickness on fracture energy of transverse crack tension (TCT) and end notched flexure (ENF) specimens has been numerically studied and comparison with experimental results has been made. It is shown that the developed numerical approach is capable of estimating increase in fracture energy due to size effect.

  • The finite element analysis for the tubular alumina liner which was shrink-fitted into a heat treated high speed steel (HSS) sleeve and subjected to high inner pressure and high temperature was performed. The parameters for the analysis were the interference between the alumina and the HSS, the temperature, the inner pressure, the coefficient of friction between the alumina and the HSS, and the taper at the sleeve ends. From the analysis, it was found that the tensile hoop stresses were decreased when the end parts of the HSS sleeve were tapered and the tensile stresses were decreased as the coefficient of friction between the alumina and the HSS was decreased. Also it was found that the alumina might be used as the structural liner for high pressure and high temperature when it was shrink-fitted into a heat treated HSS sleeve.

  • Studies on brake system recently are focused on braking performance, especially the consideration on safety of braking system in an extreme situation and reduction of vibration and noise during braking operation. The thermal crack and Judder from the friction between brake disc and pad can bring the threaten of passengers' safety in the end. Braking force comes from the change of kinetic energy to friction energy. Since heat energy is developed from here, the analysis on thermal stress and thermal strain can be the good data when selecting the material of brake pad and designing heat radiation holes on the disc and it will also be the data when designing the thickness of the disc. This paper is intended to show a creative design method by suggesting the thermal analysis data through FEM study and using shape design parameters.

  • It is very important to improve the durability and reliability of crankshaft because of conflicting demands for lower fuel consumption and higher power output. In this study, for the crankshaft bearing design, analyses were conducted to determine the lubrication characteristics such as oil flow rate, minimum oil film thickness, friction force and increase of oil temperature at main bearing and connecting rod bearing. Additionally, supplied oil pressure and temperature effects on the bearings were simulated to figure out lubrication characteristics on the bearings. Finally the effects of increasing the bearing width and clearance were introduced on the lubrication characteristics.

  • The aim of the work described in this paper is to study the shear characteristics of the weathered granite soil. To this end, a series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests are carried out to investigate the shear parameters-cohesion and internal friction angle for the degree of saturation and degree of weathering. From the results, it is found that the shear parameters of weathered granite soil are influenced on the degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance. Especially, internal friction angle is more influenced on the upper factors than cohesion. And shear parameters are more acted on the degree of saturation than the degree of weathering in the test range. It is, therefore, recommended that must be considered the conditions of granite soil-degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance etc-in case of the calculation of bearing capacity, stability analysis and other designs with shear parameters.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear $H_2/H_\infty/LTR$ control for the flexible inverted pendulum of a parallel type with Coulomb friction is presented. The dynamic equation for this system is derived by the Hamilton's principle and assumed-mode method. This hard nonlinear system can be modeled by a the quasi-linear state space model using the REF method. It is shown that the $H_2/H_\infty$ control can be applied to the nonlinear controller design of the system having Coulomb frictions if the proper LTR conditions are satisfied. In order to present the usefulness of the suggested control method, the nonlinear $H_2/H_\infty/LTR$ controller is designed to control the Position of the end point of the flexible inverted pendulum that has Coulomb frictions present in actuator parts. The results are given via computer simulations.
