This paper describes the results of bearing capacity using field loading test of pile, in order to extend the applicability of drilled shaft with mid-size, and the results were compared with the prediction results of design bearing capacity by empirical formular. The static load test result showed that the allowable bearing capacity of high pile strength was about 2.4 times higher than that of low pile strength. The dynamic load test result showed that the allowable bearing capacity of high pile strength was about 1.4 times~1.5 times higher than that of low pile strength. The comparison result of allowable bearing capacity between static and dynamic load test showed that the difference of allowable load ranged from 3% to 6% under the same settlement conditions. As a result of comparing the ultimate bearing capacity by load test and design bearing capacity, it was found that the FHWA proposed equation could be more reasonable than the other proposed equation in load sharing ratios of end bearing and skin friction.
The effect of raft flexibility on piled raft foundations in sandy soil was investigated using a numerical analysis and an analytical study. The investigation's emphasis was the load sharing between piles and raft following the raft rigidity (KR), end-bearing conditions. The case of individual piles and subsequently the response of groups of piles was analyzed using a 3D FEM. This study shows that the αpr, load-sharing ratio of piled raft foundations, decreases as the vertical loading increases and as the KR decreases. This tendency is more obvious when using friction piles compared to using end-bearing piles. The effect of raft rigidity is found to be more significant for the axial force distribution - each pile within the foundations has almost similar axial forces of the pile head with a flexible raft; however, each pile has different values with rigid rafts, especially with the end-bearing piles. The axial force of the pile base with floating piles shows similar point-bearing resistance for all the piles; however, it shows different values with end-bearing piles. The differential settlement ratio of rafts showed a larger value with lower KR.
This study results of performed field load test in order to estimate the best pile length assessment and allowable bearing capacity of the pile foundation. End of initial driving(EOID) and restrike of pile dynamic loading tests were performed to calculate allowable bearing capacity of the experimental pile side and results were compared with the allowable bearing capacity estimated by theory. The results of allowable bearing capacity by EOID test is $1.08{\sim}1.21$ in the range of compared to the capacity calculated by the Structure Foundation Design Criterion. Allowable bearing Capacity by restrike of pile dynamic loading test is $1.32{\sim}1.48$ in the range of compared to the Structure Foundation Design Criterion. The Foundation Design Criterion underestimated the pile capacity. If the bearing capacity calculated by Structure Foundation Design Criterion is 100, EOID of pile dynamic loading test is 116, restrike of pile dynamic loading test is 138 for 20m pile used in this experimental.
The purpose of Part I of this study is to find the potential region of wear scarring on engine journal bearings operating at a constant angular crank shaft velocity under firing conditions. To do this, we calculate the applied loads and eccentricities of a big-end journal bearing installed on a four-stroke and four-cylinder engine at every crank angle. Then, we find potential wear regions, such as a minimum oil film thickness, at every crank angle below most oil film thickness scarring wear (MOFTSW) obtained based on the concept of the centerline average surface roughness. Thus, the wear region is defined as a set of each film thickness below the MOFTSW at every crank angle. In this region, the wear volume changes according to the wear depth and wear angle, depending on the minimum oil film thickness at every crank angle. The total wear volume is the summation during one cycle. Graphical views of the region in the two-dimensional coordinates show the crank angle and bearing angle along the journal center path, indicating the position of the minimum oil film thickness. The results of wear analysis show that the possible wear region is located at a few tens of angles behind the upper center of a big-end bearing at maximum power rpm.

This study, as basic research which was intended to develope the surface reinforcement method using reinforcement material which is applicable to very soft ground in Korea, was aimed at proposing the design parameter for the surface ground improvement method. To that end, a wide width tensile test using geotextile, geogrid and steel bar (substitute for bamboo) and 25 kinds of the laboratory model tests with the end restraint conditions of the reinforcement that comprises the constrained and partially constrained (3 types) conditions were conducted. And the result indicated that the modulus of subgrade reaction or $N_c$ value (5.3) apparently overestimated the bearing capacity of very soft ground such as dredged ground. Moreover, as a result of model test by partially constraining the preload of 23.0kgf using geotextile, the effect of bearing capacity($q_1$) appeared to be the largest till the loading stress was $0.4tf/m^2$ due to cohesion, while it reached 75% of the maximum bearing force after $0.4tf/m^2$ due to increase in the effect of bearing capacity($q_2$) caused by the tensile force of the reinforcement. Such results tended to have appeared constantly or very similarly with each other, irrespective of the type of reinforcement (geogrid, steel bar) and constraint conditions.
The standard construction manual of the SDA (Separated Doughnut Auger) piling method was proposed so that the resisting capacity of the augered piles could work effectively. 438 dynamic pile load tests were performed on 379 test piles, which were installed at 36 sites in Korea by the SDA piling method with application of various water-cement ratio of cement milks. The dynamic pile load test results showed that the bearing capacity of the SDA augered piles depended on the water-cement ratio of cement milks. And couple of the formulas were presented according to water-cement ratio and various grounds to estimate quantitatively both the unit end bearing and the unit frictional capacity of the SDA augered piles. It was also considered that the water-cement ratio of cement milks exerts an influence on the bearing capacity of the SDA augered piles. The presented formulas were compared with the existing formulas, which were presented by several standard design codes to design the augered piles.

This study was carried out as one of efforts to overcome difficulties in air bearing design due to low stiffness and low damping. Hydrodynamic effects on hydrodynamic stiffness of a fluid film in a high speed air bearing with tow-row air sources are investigated. The hydrodynamic effects by the high speed over DN 1,000,000 and eccentricity of a proceeding which are not considered in conventional design of an air bearing need to be reconsidered. The hydrodynamic effects, which dominantly influence on the load capacity of air bearing, are caused mainly by proceeding speed, eccentricity, and the source positions. The two-row source arrangement in the air bearing produces quite unique hydrodynamic effects with respect to pressure distribution of the air film. Optimal arrangement of the two-row sources improves performance of an air bearing in film reaction force and loading capacity of high speed spindles. This study compares the pressure distribution by numerical simulation as a function of eccentricity of proceeding and the source positions. The air source position 1/7L form one end of an air bearing was found to be superior to source position of 1/4L. The dynamic stiffness were obtained using a two-dimensional cutting method which can directly measure the cutting reaction forces and the displacements of the spindle in two directions using a tool dynamometer and transducer sensors. Heat generation in the air film can not be negligible over the speed of DN 2,000,000. In order to analysis effects of heat generation on the characteristics of air bearing, high cooling bearing spindle and low cooling bearing spindle were tested and compared. Characteristics of the frequency response of shaft and motion of run out errors were different for the spindle. The test results show that, in the case of low cooling bearing spindle, the stiffness became smaller due to heat generation. The results, which were obtained for high speed region, may be used as a design information for spindle which can be applied to precision devices such as ultra precision grinding and ultra high speed milling.
Induction motors are the most commonly used electrical drives because they are rugged, mechanically simple, adaptable to widely different operating conditions, and simple to control. The most common faults in squirrel-cage induction motors are bearing, stator and rotor faults. Surveys conducted by the IEEE and EPRI show that the most common fault in induction motor is bearing failure (${\sim}$40% of failure). Thence, this paper addresses experimental results for diagnosing faults with different rolling element bearing damage via motor current spectral analysis. Rolling element bearings generally consist of two rings, an inner and outer, between which a set of balls or rollers rotate in raceways. We set the experimental test bed to detect the rolling-element bearing misalignment of 3 type induction motors with normal condition bearing system, shaft deflection system by external force and a hole drilled through the outer race of the shaft end bearing of the four pole test motor. This paper takes the initial step of investigating the efficacy of current monitoring for bearing fault detection by incipient bearing failure. The failure modes are reviewed and the characteristics of bearing frequency associated with the physical construction of the bearings are defined. The effects on the stator current spectrum are described and related frequencies are also determined. This is an important result in the formulation of a fault detection scheme that monitors the stator currents. We utilized the FFT, Wavelet analysis and averaging signal pattern by inner product tool to analyze stator current components. The test results clearly illustrate that the stator signature can be used to identify the presence of a bearing fault.
This study examined the tribological characteristics of the drive shaft and axle system in vehicles. The first drive shaft example contained end play for a CV joint that transferred part of the transmission power to the wheel. The joint part of the drive shaft was deformed because of reduced durability due to wear. Thus, vibrations caused the body to shake and become unbalanced when the drive shaft transferred the power. The second example was the cross-section of a shaft that connected the slip-connection of the propeller shaft on the input side to the yoke flange of the output side; the durability was reduced because of corrosion. End play caused by wear between the bearing and cross-section shaft appeared to cause shaking. In the third example, a grease leak reduced lubrication and thus caused damage to the hub bearing and inside the knuckle. The failure was produced by sticking. The fourth example had noise produced by the gear and gear transfer. This was due to the backlash of the pinion and few ring gears for the differential gear. Therefore, drive shaft and axle systems must be thoroughly checked and managed to minimize and reduce failure phenomena.

These days the construction of extra-long piles increases. It is not unusual to install piles whose length exceed 45m. In such cases, the estimated value of negative skin friction becomes larger, often larger than the design load. In order to be sure of the safety of the super structure, the magnitude of the positive skin friction and the base bearing capacity should be known. In practice dynamic pile loading tests using PDA is the only possible measure to meet this requirement. However the analysis of dynamic pile loading test for such extra-long piles requires a thorough understanding of the pile-soil behaviour. In this paper, a new method to evaluate the positive skin friction and end bearing capacity from the normally performed PDA test is proposed. The proposed method was verified by performing specially designed pilot testings.
