Flexural behavior of cold-formed steel concrete composite beams

  • Flexural behavior of thin walled steel-concrete composite sections as cross sections for beams is investigated by conducting an experimental study supported by applicable analytical predictions. The experimental study consists of testing up to failure, simply supported beams of effective span 1440 mm under two point loading. The test specimens consisted of composite box and channel (with lip placed on tension side and compression side) sections, the behavior of which was compared with companion empty sections. To understand the role of shear connectors in developing the composite action, some of the composite sections were provided with novel simple bar type and conventional bolt type shear connectors in the shear zone of beams. Two RCC beams having equivalent ultimate moment carrying capacities as that of composite channel and box sections were also considered in the study. The study showed that the strength to weight ratio of composite beams is much higher than RCC beams and ductility index is also more than RCC and empty beams. The analytical predictions were found to compare fairly well with the experimental results, thereby validating the applicability of rigid plastic theory to cold-formed steel concrete composite beams.

  • Among welded structure bogies in use for high speed freight car, a part of bogies manufactured in 1999 and 2000 have found problems that failure occurs in its end beam. In case of a freight car a difference of weight between empty and loading conditions are worse than in case of a passenger car. Moreover its brake system is tread brake without second suspension system. A failure of end beam is supposed to be due to loading by brake rather than vertical loading by freight. This failure can make brake system useless and may be a cause of derailment in the worst case. In this study, in order to be proved the cause of failure and to solve the problem it is described that we have measured load history acted on end beam and set up the procedures.

  • In this study, we focus on the feasibility of structural topology optimization for a steel-timber composite beam design of optimally allocating glue-laminated timbers into a web with openings under the condition of given steel flanges. The motivation of this study is to topologically take maximal stiffness harmonizing both tension and compression performance of the steel-timber composite beam and become the eco-frandly timber design for buidling members. As a result of this study, the key web-openings allocation becomes triangle spaces, i.e., empty or no materials, of optimal topologies of both a pure timber plate and a steel flange-web timber plate without web-openings. Several applicable examples verify the effectiveness of topology optimization for steel-timber beams with web-openings.

These cracks can make brake system useless and may be a cause of derailment in the worst case. In this study, we have proposed a simple torsion-free brake shoe holder hanger to remove torsion of hanger bracket which was supposed to be one of causes of cracks and performed finite element analyses. Also static load test was applied in torsion free brake shoe holder.

동적 원심모형실험을 이용한 등가전단보 토조의 성능 검증 (Validation of Equivalent Shear Beam Container Using Dynamic Centrifuge Tests)

  • 동적 원심모형실험에서 사용되는 등가전단보(Equivalent Shear Beam, ESB) 토조는 모형지반과 토조 사이 발생할 수 있는 경계효과를 최소화함으로써 지진 시 실제 지반의 운동을 효과적으로 모사할 수 있다. KAIST에서 사용하는 등가전단보 토조는 성능이 검증된 바 있다(Lee 등, 2013). 그러나 토조의 노후화로 고유주기 및 동적 특성의 재검증이 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 동적 원심모형실험을 통해 등가전단보 토조의 동적 특성을 재평가하였다. 등가전단보 토조 자체의 고유주기를 산정하여 Lee 등(2013)의 결과와 비교 분석하였으며, 모래가 채워진 등가전단보 토조의 경계효과를 평가하였다. 실험 결과, 등가전단보 토조는 토조 자체의 강성 증가로 인해 토조 자체의 고유주기가 감소하였으나, 모래가 채워진 등가전단보 토조 벽체의 지진 시 시간 이력과 주파수 특성은 지반의 거동과 유사하였다. 또한, 등가전단보 토조에 조성한 모형지반과 수치해석을 통해 도출한 지반의 동적 응답도 유사하게 나타났다. 이를 통해 등가전단보 토조 자체의 고유주기 감소로 인한 지진 시 지반과 토조의 경계효과는 크지 않음을 알 수 있었다.

효과적인 빔 폭 중첩을 이용한 고성능 장애물 탐지용 중첩 초음파 센서 링의 최적 설계 (Optimal Design of Overlapped Ultrasonic Sensor Ring for High Performance Obstacle Detection Using Effective Beam Overlap)

  • 본 논문에서는 인접 초음파 센서간 효과적인 빔 폭 중첩을 이용하여 고성능 장애물 탐지를 위한 중첩 초음파 센서 링을 최적 설계하는 방법에 대해 체계적으로 기술하도록 한다. 기본적으로 일군의 동종 저지향성 초음파 센서들이 일정 간격으로 상호 빔 폭이 중첩되도록 원형 배치된다고 가정한다. 첫째 초음파 센서의 실제와 단순화된 빔 패턴 그리고 빔 폭 내의 장애물 위치 추정을 위한 여러 센서 모델에 대해 소개한다. 둘째, 중첩 초음파 센서 링의 장애물 탐지 범위와 장애물 위치 추정을 위한 간단한 센서 모델에 대해 기술한다. 셋째, 타원과 비타원 형태의 빔 패턴에 대해 각각, 장애물 탐지 시 위치 불확실성이 최소화되도록 중첩 초음파 센서 링을 설계하기 위한 지수를 정의한다. 넷째, 최소한의 빔 폭 중첩 보장과 과도한 빔 폭 중첩 회피를 위해 요구되는 중첩 초음파 센서 링의 구조적 사양에 대한 제한 조건을 유도한다. 다섯째, 주어진 중첩 초음파 센서 링의 반경에 대한 초음파 센서의 최적 사용 개수와 주어진 초음파 센서의 사용 개수에 대한 중첩 초음파 센서 링의 최적 반경을 결정한다. 본 논문 전반에 걸쳐, 대표적인 상용 저지향성 초음파 센서로서 Murata사의 MA40B8이 채택되었다.

  • This paper presents a bin picking method using a slit beam laser in which a robot recognizes all of the unoccluded objects from the top of jumbled objects, and picks them up one by one. Once those unoccluded objects are removed, newly developed unoccluded objects underneath are recognized and the same process is continued until the bin gets empty. To recognize unoccluded objects, a new algorithm to link edges on slices which are generated by the orthogonally mounted laser on the xy table is proposed. The edges on slices are partitioned and classified using convex and concave function with a distance parameter. The edge types on the neighborhood slices are compared, then the hamming distances among identical kinds of edges are extracted as the features of fuzzy membership function. The sugeno fuzzy integration about features is used to determine linked edges. Finally, the pick-up sequence based on MaxMin theory is determined to cause minimal disturbance to the pile. This proposed method may provide a solution to the automation of part handling in manufacturing environments such as in punch press operation or part assembly.

Simple bone cyst recurred in adjacent areas: A case report

  • Simple bone cyst is a pseudocyst that typically occurs in patients during their second and third decades of life. This benign entity is an empty or fluid-filled cavity that lacks a true epithelial lining. Simple bone cysts are often asymptomatic and are commonly found in mandibular body, predominantly in the posterior region. The treatment of simple bone cysts can be influenced by factors such as the patient's age, the size of the lesion, and the presence or absence of symptoms. In the case of a simple bone cyst in the mandible that is small and symptomless, a watchful waiting approach may be appropriate. However, if the cyst is large and symptomatic, surgical treatment is recommended. This report presents a radiological examination of a simple bone cyst that developed around the root of the mandibular first molar in a 36-year-old female patient. The cyst recurred in adjacent areas despite surgical treatment.

Effect of object position in the field of view and application of a metal artifact reduction algorithm on the detection of vertical root fractures on cone-beam computed tomography scans: An in vitro study

  • Purpose: To assess the effects of object position in the field of view (FOV) and application of a metal artifact reduction (MAR) algorithm on the diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for the detection of vertical root fractures(VRFs). Materials and Methods: Sixty human single-canal premolars received root canal treatment. VRFs were induced in 30 endodontically treated teeth. The teeth were then divided into 4 groups, with 2 groups receiving metal posts and the remaining 2 only having an empty post space. The roots from different groups were mounted in a phantom made of cow rib bone, and CBCT scans were obtained for the 4 different groups. Three observers evaluated the images independently. Results: The highest frequency of correct diagnoses of VRFs was obtained with the object positioned centrally in the FOV, using the MAR algorithm. Peripheral positioning of the object without the MAR algorithm yielded the highest sensitivity for the first observer (66.7%). For the second and third observers, a central position improved sensitivity, with or without the MAR algorithm. In the presence of metal posts, central positioning of the object in the FOV significantly increased the diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy compared to peripheral positioning. Conclusion: Diagnostic accuracy was higher with central positioning than with peripheral positioning, irrespective of whether the MAR algorithm was applied. However, the effect of the MAR algorithm was more significant with central positioning than with peripheral positioning of the object in the FOV. The clinical experience and expertise of the observers may serve as a confounder in this respect.
