  • This study examines work and family life of married women employed in a manufacturing industry. Data were gathered from the use of fact-to-face interview method from a sample of 230 married working women. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows : (1) With high rates of change of job, most of the respondents remain unstable in their working situation. It was shown that the important factors influencing job satisfaction of married women are women's life cycle, degree of contribution of wife's income toward total family income, and husband's attitude toward wife's empolyment. The degree of job satisfaction is also strongly influenced by labor structural factors such as pay, work environment and fringe benefits. (2) The amount of household labor time was limited by job-related factors rather than by family-related factors, because among these working women employment itself is necessarily for their subsistance. (3) It was shown that wives participated more actively in their marital communications than their husbands. Most of the respondents showed the syncratic type of the decision making patterns, but this results does not necessarily mean wives exercised an equal power with their husbands. The economic factors and the emotional instability of the husband are the ones mostly influencing marital conflicts of the employed women. It was found that the respondents easily revealed marital conflicts related to personal problems of their husbands(such as extramarital affairs, gambling and alchoholism). However, they tried to overcome the structural conflicts related to authoritarian attitudes of their husbands or economic problems without any complaints. (4) Mothers have difficulty in controlling their adolescent children, due to the weakening of parental authority. Although most of the respondents perceived their employment as having negative impacts on their children, they still have high expectations toward their children. Inspite of low degree of father role expectations and facther role performance of their husbands, most of the respondents anticipated expressive roles as well as traditionally instrumental role from their husbands. Finally, these findings would help us determine family welfare policies in Korea. Improvements in paid and household labor structure of married women should be accomplished at the national level. Also, the acting programs for parent education, marital councelling services, and law enforcement for equal employment between men and women should be provided in our society.

  • This paper examines the associations of having a helper for domestic work or childcare and time spent on it by couples in South Korea. We use five waves of panel survey data from the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF), which allows longitudinal changes within couples over time that account for potential selection effects and unobserved heterogeneity among individuals. With fixed effects, we find outsourcing is associated with a decrease in wife's time spent on domestic work or childcare by 1 hour per week. However, the decrease is concentrated on the unemployed wife's time, but not employed wife's time. In addition, outsourcing is not a significant factor for husband's time and the husband's share of total contribution. This may be because wives are the main provider of domestic work and childcare in Korea regardless of employment status or having any helper. Due to unequal contributions between husband and wife, using outsourcing also neither alleviates the employed wife's contribution nor changes the husband's contribution. However, the results may be underestimated because there are more common and diverse types of outsourcing in a broad sense, such as going out for dinner, buying prepared food, and using dry cleaning services. We expect future studies to consider more broad types of outsourcing and examine how relations with the couple's time use at home are different by type.

  • This study compared the pattern of couples' time-use in rural areas. Wives' and husbands' time spent in household work, leisure, and agricultural labor were compared. In addition, this study examined what factors determine the amount of time of couples spent in such activities. According to the results, in general, the pattern of couple's time-use in rural area was different. Regarding the pattern of time-use, three major results could be mentioned. First of all, husband in rural area spent most agricultural labour time in busy farming season. And then husband spent much time in leisure activities and wife spent in household work. Second, wife spent more time in inactive leisure and husband spent more time in active leisure. Third, husband in rural area spent less time in household work. In particular. they spent less time in female-typed work than male-typed work. To examine what factors determine the extent of time spent in such activities, three theories were employed and tested. According to the results, the models employed in this study were realistic in explaining the amount of time of couple in rural area, and more adjustable wife than husband. In conclusion, a combination of the multidimensional theoretical perspectives used in this study helpfully explains the variation in the amount of time-use of couple in rural area.

In this paper, I deal with mainly the gas products and agricultural products and then observe the consumers' reaction for those two products concerning to the consumer's safety problem. For this purpose, I distributed the questionnaire to the residents I Seoul and suburban area of age between 20 and 60 years old. As a result, consumers put high values and concerns on general safety, but have quite negative concepts on society's safety problems generally. It was found that the consciousness on this problem was higher among those people who were reading journals for consumers, who have high education or high incomes, or who were unemployed house wives. In gas products, the level of consumer's safety seeking behavior and subareas were higher than in agricultural products. In the matter of the variables which affect the consumer's safety seeking behavior directly, those were safety consciousness variables and experience of reading journal for consumer in gas products, and safety consciousness vatiabls, consumer education experience, experience of injury, being employed and being married in agricultural products. Also as the result of path analysis, experience of reading journal for consumer, being employed, education and income level influenced indirectly the consumer safety seeking behavior.

The subjects were 1203 house wives mainly in the age of 30-40 and self administered questionnaire was employed. The results were as follows. Subjects' demand on nutrition information was greater while the availablity and usefulness of NL was unsatisfactory. The purchase frequencies of nutrient controlled foods were higher compared to NL reading. The use comprehenison reliability of nutrition information were better in high NK group compared to low NK group except the reliability on health claims. The required nutrients for content information were in the order of calorie Ca cholesterol Fe protein and total fat. The demand for nutrient content information was carrelated with intention of subjects' dietary modification but not the use of NL. These results indicate that NL be a good source of nutrition information and the consumers' demand for NL was based on their dietary purpose though the use of NL was unconfirmed.
