  • The human instinct toward nature is biophilia as a psychological term. There have been a number of empirical evidences confirmed that natural features in buildings enhance human's comfort focusing on biophilia. However, the evolution of society, science, and industry has separated modern buildings from nature. Therefore, this paper addresses the assumption that the admiration for historical buildings in contemporary society is attribute to the qualities of biophilic design. Prospect and refuge, one of the strategies for biophilic design, ultimately provides the opportunity to recover from stress and tension. The purpose of this study is to figure out elements of prospect and refuge based on the design theory of biophilia for psychological healing. This study explores the Gyeongbokgung Palace with the design elements of prospect and refuge in biophilia. It also measures these elements quantitatively with the contrast using Adobe Photoshop CS6, and the area ratio of prospect and refuge. The results of this research verify that the conflicting characteristics of prospect and refuge are identified simultaneously, it is significant to attract people. Gangnyeongjeon Hall and Gyotaejeon Hall, the living quarters for the king and queen, propose the intense pattern of refuge characteristics more than other areas. The mathematical properties of the area ratio show that the pattern of prospect-refuge characteristics change in particular design elements.

  • In this study, the possibility of evaluating the peculiar fracture strength of weldment in high strength steels was investigated by means of a small punch(SP) test. In order to obtain the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of SP energy by which the fracture strength of weldment in structural steels such as SS41 and SM53B steels had been evaluated in our preceding publication, the effects of notches and loading rates on SP energy were discussed. It was found that the correspondence of SP energy to critical COD at test temperature -196.deg. C showed a linear relation with some deviation. The empirical correlation with scatter band, Esp/(Esp)p = 1.67[.delta./(.delta./sub c//(.delta./sub c/)/sub p/]-0.55, was developed between the SP energy ratio and critical COD ratio of each weld structure compared with parent material at test temperature -196.deg. C. In addition, there did not appear to be a significant effect of test materials and specimen size etc. on the correlation.

  • The relations of the various undrained geotechnical properties were, in depth, investigated for highly plastic soils using the numerous experimental testing results. The sensitivity is proportional to void ratio and OCR but inversely proportional to effective unit weight. The difference in Su(Un), Su(UU), and Su(FV) tends to increase or decrease with such sensitivity, void ratio, and OCR. The possibility of deducting the empirical equations denoting the correlations of various properties and the indicator for selecting appropriate testing method could be confirmed.

  • In the design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, apart from providing adequate strength, it is also necessary to provide a minimum deformability even for beams not located in seismic regions. In most RC design codes, this is achieved by restricting the maximum tension steel ratio or neutral axis depth. However, this empirical deemed-to-satisfy method, which was developed based on beams made of normal-strength concrete (NSC) and normal-strength steel (NSS), would not provide a consistent deformability to beams made of high-strength concrete (HSC) and/or high-strength steel (HSS). More critically, HSC beams would have much lower deformability than that provided previously to NSC beams. To ensure that a consistent deformability is provided to all RC beams, it is proposed herein to set an absolute minimum rotation capacity to all RC beams in the design. Based on this requirement, the respective maximum limits of tension steel ratio and neutral axis depth for different concrete and steel yield strengths are derived based on a formula developed by the authors. Finally for incorporation into design codes, simplified guidelines for designing RC beams having the proposed minimum deformability are developed.

  • Since the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS)/Nimbus-7 was launched in 1978, a variety of studies have been conducted to retrieve ocean color variables from multi-satellites. Several algorithms and formulations have been suggested for estimating ocean color variables based on multi band data at different wavelengths. Chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration is one of the most important variables to understand low-level ecosystem in the ocean. To retrieve chl-a concentrations from the satellite observations, an appropriate algorithm depending on water properties is required for each satellite sensor. Most operational empirical algorithms in the global ocean have been developed based on the band-ratio approach, which has the disadvantage of being more adapted to the open ocean than to coastal areas. Alternative algorithms, including the semi-analytical approach, may complement the limits of band-ratio algorithms. As more sensors are planned by various space agencies to monitor the ocean surface, it is expected that continuous monitoring of oceanic ecosystems and environments should be conducted to contribute to the understanding of the oceanic biosphere and the impact of climate change. This study presents an overview of the past and present algorithms for the estimation of chl-a concentration based on multi-satellite data and also presents the prospects for ongoing and upcoming ocean color satellites.

  • Plate anchors are generally used for structures like transmission towers, mooring systems etc. where the uplift and lateral forces are expected to be predominant. The capacity of anchor plate can be increased by the use of geosynthetics without altering the size of plates. Numerical simulations have been carried out on three different sizes of square anchor plates. A single layer geosynthetic has been used as reinforcement in the analysis and placed at three different positions from the plate. The effects of various parameters like embedment ratio, position of reinforcement, width of reinforcement, frequency and loading amplitude on the pull out capacity have been presented in this study. The load-displacement behaviour of anchors for various embedment ratios with and without reinforcement has been also observed. The pull out load, corresponding to a displacement equal to each of the considered maximum amplitudes of a given frequency, has been expressed in terms of a dimensionless breakout factor. The pull out load for all anchors has been found to increase by more than 100% with embedment ratio varying from 1 to 6. Finally a semi empirical formulation for breakout factor for square anchors in reinforced soil has also been proposed by carrying out regression analysis on the data obtained from numerical simulations.

  • We study false discovery rate segmentation (FDRSeg) and simultaneous multiscale change-point estimator (SMUCE) methods for multiscale multiple change-point estimation, and compare empirical behavior via simulation. FSRSeg is based on the control of a false discovery rate while SMUCE used for the multiscale local likelihood ratio tests. FDRSeg seems to work best if the number of change-points is large; however, FDRSeg and SMUCE methods can both provide similar estimation results when there are only a small number of change-points. As a real data application, multiple change-points estimation is done with the well-log data.

  • The aim of this paper is to identify the key determinants in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows by using a balanced data panel for the period from 1995 to 2018. This study covers GCC countries in their entirety. The study uses ten explanatory variables, namely, trade ratio, gross domestic product, external balance, fuel exports, gross savings, international tourism, military expenditure, net foreign assets, services value added, and total natural resources. The authors have tried to find the best fit model from the differences methods considered such as OLS, GLS regression with the help of Hausman test, and country by country regressions as additional analysis. The study revealed a significantly positive association between inflation, trade ratio, gross domestic product, gross savings, and net foreign assets with FDI. On the contrary, international tourism was revealed to have a negative association with FDI. The sample of all GCC countries chosen for this study has not been considered widely by any earlier study. Moreover, this study covered many determinants of FDI that add to the previous literature. It is a significant contribution to the current research body and stresses the originality of this paper.

  • Methods for predicting the ultimate/buckling strength of ship structures have been extensively improved in terms of design formulas and analytical solutions. In recent years, the design strategy of ships and offshore structures has tended to emphasize lighter builds and improve operational safety. Therefore, the corresponding geometrical changes in design necessitate the use of high-tensile steel and thin plates. However, the existing design formulas were mainly developed for thick plates and mild steels. Therefore, the calculation methods require appropriate modification for new designs beased on high-tensile steel and thin plates. In this study, a modified formula was developed to predict the ultimate strength of thin steel plates subjected to compressive and shear loads. Based on the numerical results, the effects of the yield stress, slenderness ratio, and loading condition on the buckling/ultimate strength of steel plates were examined, and a newly modified double-beta parameter formula was developed. The results were used to derive and modify existing closed-form expressions and empirical formulas to predict the ultimate strength of thin-walled steel structures.
