In this study, three condensation models of the CUPID code, i.e., the resolved boundary layer approach (RBLA), heat and mass transfer analogy (HMTA) model, and an empirical correlation, were tested and validated against the COPAIN and CAU tests. An improvement on HMTA model was also made to use well-known heat transfer correlations and to take geometrical effect into consideration. The RBLA was a best option for simulating the COPAIN test, having mean relative error (MRE) about 0.072, followed by the modified HMTA model (MRE about 0.18). On the other hand, benchmark against CAU test (under natural convection and occurred on a slender tube) indicated that the modified HMTA model had better accuracy (MRE about 0.149) than the RBLA (MRE about 0.314). The HMTA model with wall function and the empirical correlation underestimated significantly, having MRE about 0.787 and 0.55 respectively. When using the HMTA model, consideration of geometrical effect such as tube curvature was essential; ignoring such effect leads to significant underestimation. The HMTA and the empirical correlation required significantly less computational resources than the RBLA model. Considering that the HMTA model was reasonable accurate, it may be preferable for large-scale simulations of containment.
A new semi-empirical average heat transfer correlation applicable for both laminar and turbulent film-wise condensation on a vertical surface has been presented. Re functional form of the present correlation is based on the representative existing correlations for laminar and turbulent film flows, whereas the numerical coefficients of the present correlation have been determined by the least squares method using experimental data obtained from the open literatures. In addition, the performance of the present as well as the seven existing correlations (four for laminar and three for turbulent film flow regimes) were evaluated for their accuracy and the range of application. The result shows that for laminar film filow regimes Zazuli's and the present correlations give the samllest values of mean error, whereas for turbulent film How regimes Kirkbride and Badger's and the present correlations produce the smallest values of mean error.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of macro-finance variables on the correlation between the housing and stock markets because understanding the nature of time-varying correlations between different assets has important implications on portfolio allocation and risk management. Thus, we adopted the AG-DCC GARCH model to obtain time-varying, conditional correlations. Our sample ranged from January 2004 to November 2017. Our empirical result showed that the coefficients on asymmetric correlation were significantly positive, implying that correlations between the housing and stock markets were significantly higher when changes in the housing price and stock returns were negative. This finding suggested that the housing market has less hedging potential during a stock market downturn, when such a hedging strategy might be necessary. Based on the regression analysis, we found that the term spread had a significantly negative effect on correlations, while the credit spread had a significantly positive effect. This result could be interpreted by the risk premium effect.

Accurate prediction of the undrained shaft resistance is essential for robust design of bored piles in undrained condition. The undrained shaft resistance is calculated using the undrained adhesion factor multiplied by the undrained cohesion of the soil. However, the available correlations to predict the undrained adhesion factor have been developed using simple regression techniques and the accuracy of these correlations has not been thoroughly assessed in previous studies. The lack of the assessment of these correlations made it difficult for geotechnical engineers to select the most accurate correlation in routine designs. Furthermore, limited attempts have been made in previous studies to use advanced data mining techniques to develop simple and accurate correlation to predict the undrained adhesion factor. This research, therefore, has been conducted to fill these gaps in knowledge by developing novel and robust correlation to predict the undrained adhesion factor. The development of the new correlation has been conducted using the multi-objective evolutionary polynomial regression analysis. The new correlation outperformed the available empirical correlations, where the new correlation scored lower mean absolute error, mean square error, root mean square error and standard deviation of measured to predicted adhesion factor, and higher mean, a20-index and coefficient of correlation. The correlation also successfully showed the influence of the undrained cohesion and the effective stress on the adhesion factor. Hence, the new correlation enhances the design accuracy and can be used by practitioner geotechnical engineers to ensure optimized designs of bored piles in undrained conditions.
Average and local convective heat transfer coefficients of nitrogen are measured experimentally in an electrically heated circular tube for a range of Reynolds number from 1.08 × 104 to 3.60 × 104, and wall-to-bulk temperature ratio from 1.01 to 1.77. The exit Mach number is up to 0.17, and the heat flux is up to 46 kW·m-2. The molybdenum test section has a 62 diameters heated section with an inside diameter of 5 mm and a 30 diameters entrance section to ensure the fully-developed flow. Uncertainty of Nusselt number is less than 1.6 % in this study. The results indicate that the average heat transfer correlations evaluated by both the bulk and the modified film Reynolds numbers agree well with the experimental data. The local heat transfer results based on bulk properties are compared with previous empirical correlations. New prediction correlations are recommended which are significantly affected by the property variation and heated length. The comparison between the proposed correlations and experimental points shows that 88 % of experimental data fall into an error of 10 %, and almost all data are within an error of 20 %.
Common Method Bias(CMB) may cause the potential inflation of correlations between measures assessed via the same method. The problem of CMB has been well known in behavioral sciences because the survey method with self-reporting is vulnerable to CMB. Thus, the discussion on CMB is still ongoing in the MIS research in US. However, in Korea, the MIS research has never paid attention on the CMB problem. The purpose of this study is to examine the CMB problem in the Korean MIS research. To evaluate the effect of CMB, empirical studies on Technology Acceptance Model(TAM) are selected because (1) TAM is one of the MIS research areas studied intensively, (2) TAM is a theoretical model well supported by the existing empirical studies so that the result of this study would have a great ripple effect when the CMB problem turned out to be serious, (3) CMB is domain-specific. 47 TAM samples (out of 45 studies) from three Korean Journals were selected and the relevant data were collected such as correlation matrixes and the measures of the dependent variable. To find and evaluate the size of CMB, two analytic methods (Marker-Variable Technique and Method-Method Pair Technique) are employed. The result showed that there exists CMB in the Korean studies but the problem is not so serious to distort the empirical testing, compared with that of US studies. However, considering that CMB can contaminate the testing results, Korean MIS researchers should explicitly deal with the problem in designing empirical studies and collecting data.

In this paper, the applicability to the Korean rock condition of using the deformation moduli based on Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Pressuremeter Test (PMT) is evaluated. The correlations among deformation moduli and various rock properties were also analyzed. It appears that the existing correlations using RMR overestimate the deformation moduli and wide variation was found between predicted moduli using these correlations and measured values. As for the correlations among the deformation moduli and various rock properties, Rock Quality Designation (RQD) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) were found to correlate to deformation moduli reasonably well, but joint spacing and joint conditions appear to correlate poorly to RQD and UCS. Additionally, groundwater can not be correlated with the modulus values. While the depth has very little contribution to deformation modulus, it should be factored in the simple regression analyses with various rock mass properties, especially with the correlations made with UCS, RQD etc. With the deficiencies of these correlations, more in depth analysis techniques such as multivariate correlations may be to reliably estimate deformation modulus of rock mass.

As stricter environmental regulation have led to an increase in the water treatment cost, it is necessary to quantitatively study the input power of the aeration process to improve the energy efficiency of the water treatment processes. The objective of this study is to propose the empirical correlations for the mass transfer coefficient with the gas hold-up and input power in order to investigate the mass transfer characteristics of the aeration process. It was found that as the input power increases, the mass transfer coefficient increases because of the decrease of gas hold-up and increase of Reynolds number, the penetration length, and dispersion of mixed flow. The correlations for the volumetric mass transfer coefficients with gas hold-up and input power were consistent with the experimental data, with the maximum deviation less than approximately ${\pm}10.0%$.

Although it is a limited and exploratory study, it is focused on figuring out correlations between characteristics of female CEOs who founded a company and their managerial achievements. Toward this end, the study is focused on generating such determinants as background characteristics, behavioral features and competence traits that characterize female CEOs based on previous studies and existing literature while suggesting study models and assumptions on correlations between these factors and managerial achievements and conducting empirical analyses. Results of the empirical analyses are as follows. First, regression analyses that verified relationships between background characteristics of female corporate founders and managerial achievements have found that major subjects had a significant effect, but that their experiences in corporate foundation and careers did not. Second, regression analyses that verified behavioral characteristics of female corporate CEOs and their managerial achievements have found that credibility and the motive for corporation foundation had a significant impact, but that efforts to counter risks factors did not. Third, regression analyses that verified relationships between competence features of female corporate CEOs and managerial achievements have found that managerial control capability had a significant impact, but that entrepreneurial capability and technical capability.
This paper examines the results of full-scale field tests on micropiles and side resistance is evaluated with respect to axial displacements and soil properties. Both cohesive and cohesionless soils are included in this evaluation. For all practical purposes, the developed load-displacement relationship and the geotechnical soil properties for each micropile and soil type can be used to represent the available data well through normalized average values and empirical correlations. There is a significant difference in load-carrying capacity between micropiles and drilled shafts that results primarily from the micropile pressure-grouting installation effects on the state of stress in the ground. The results show that micropiles can have a significant increase of capacity over larger-diameter drilled shafts at shallower depths with D/B < 100 or so. In cohesive soils, the typical increase is on the order of 1.5 with values as high as 2.5. For cohesionless soils, the typical increases are in the range of 1.5 to 2.5 with values as high as 6.
