  • UL-syndrome(鬱證) is a syndrome of emotional depression and various physical symptoms generally due to chronic psychological stress, without constitutional abnormality. These are cases of female patients suffering from headache, chest discomfort, heart burning, insomnia, dyspepsia, anorexia, fatigue and some other minor symptoms due to chronic stress. We diagnosed these cases as UL-syndrome and treated them with oriental medicine, specifically Gamisoyosan(加味逍遙散). This paper describes the symptoms that the patients suffered, the treatment used, and identifies stages in the development of UL-syndrome, and suggests a stage in which Gamisoyosan is efficacious.

  • Objectives : To investigate the correlations among alcohol consumption, alcoholic liver disorders, physical symptoms, and behaviors in heavy drinkers. Methods : 53 males who self-realized their severe alcohol consumption were enrolled in this study. 10 answers for a questionnaire, serum parameter, sonographic finding and body mass index were attained. The correlations between them were analyzed using Pearson's correlation and Student's t-test. Results : The average consumption of alcohol in these subjects was 2.5-fold over social drinkers. The incidence of alcoholic hepatitis was around 30%, while fatty liver 73%, and abnormal GGT 77%, respectively. No specific correlation between average volume of daily alcoholic consumption and alcohol-related hepatic parameters was shown in this study, but correlative tendency between fatty liver and body mass index was exhibited. Conclusions : This study may indicate that alcoholic liver injuries are caused by not just volume of alcohol consumed but more mixed factors including inherited genetic components, body fat mass, foods and other physical or emotional stress.

  • Harlequin syndrome, which is a rare disorder caused by dysfunction of the autonomic system, manifests as asymmetric facial flushing and sweating in response to heat, exercise, or emotional factors. The syndrome may be primary (idiopathic) with a benign course, or can occur secondary to structural abnormalities or iatrogenic factors. The precise mechanism underlying idiopathic harlequin syndrome remains unclear. Here, we describe a case of a 6-year-old boy who reported left hemifacial flushing and sweating after exercise. He had an unremarkable birth history and no significant medical history. Complete ophthalmological and neurological examinations were performed, and no other abnormalities were identified. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to exclude lesions of the cerebrum and cervicothoracic spinal cord, and no abnormalities were noted. His final diagnosis was classic idiopathic harlequin syndrome. Herein, we report the first pediatric case of idiopathic harlequin syndrome in Korea.

  • Melasma is a common disorder that causes dark colored patches. It generally causes brown spots on the face, especially on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lips. The pattern of patches has bilateral symmetry in yellowish-brown to gray-brown colors. It is much more common in women than in men. Melasma is considered to be caused by environmental and physical constitutional factors and often occurs when a woman's hormone changes by pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptive pills. It is important to combine oriental medicine and Sasang constitutional medicine for treatment of Melasma. Normal treatment of Melasma includes warming oneself, removal of the emotional stress factors, and good nutrition.

  • Objectives: Individuals' self-reported unmet needs are an important indicator of heath care of their society. Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Cycle 1.2, we examine unmet needs for mental health care in Canada and discuss its implications to health education. Results: The most frequently reported reason for unmet needs was barriers to acceptability issues, which stem primarily from lack of knowledge of mental health, negative attitudes towards mental disorder, and mistrust of mental health professionals. Unmet needs for mental health care appeared an especially serious issue among the young. Also, individuals who reported unmet needs tended to have some ill health behavior such as illicit drug use that could be their coping mechanism. On the other hand, emotional and informational support factors have shown an important mitigating effect on unmet needs. Conclusions: These findings of unmet needs pose a major challenge to health education. To effectively address unmet mental health care needs, it is recommended that the focus of relevant policies and programs should be on enhancing a multi-level mental health education strategy including efforts on individual, environmental and professional level education.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of care farming activities on the brain waves of adults with developmental disabilities from September 2022 to December 2022, with a total of 16 sessions held once a week. For 28 adults with developmental disabilities, 15 participants in the care farm program and 13 participants who did not participate were used as the control group. Before and after the care farming activities, participants' self-esteem, happiness levels, and brain function indices were measured through surveys and electroencephalography (EEG). Consequently, the self-esteem of the participants in the experimental group significantly increased after the activity, and as for the brain function index, the left brain activity index related to stress, attention, brain function, and emotional state increased compared to the control group in the experimental group of adults with developmental disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities. Notably, the effect of care farming activities was greater for women than for men with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, considering the differential effects of care farming activities based on the type of developmental disability and sex, it is deemed advantageous to primarily apply these activities to women with intellectual disabilities in order to maximize the healing effect of care farming.
