  • Emojis and avatars are widely used in online communications, but their emotional conveyance lacks research. This study aims to contribute to the field of emotional expression in computer-mediated communication (CMC) by exploring the effectiveness of emotion recognition, the intensity of perceived emotions, and the perceived preferences for emojis and avatars as emotional expression tools. The following were used as stimuli: 12 photographs from the Yonsei-Face database, 12 Memojis that reflected the photographs, and 6 iOS emojis. The results of this study indicate that emojis outperformed other forms of emotional expression in terms of conveying emotions, intensity, and preference. Indeed, the study findings confirm that emojis remain the dominant form of emotional signals in CMC. In contrast, the study revealed that Memojis were inadequate as an expressive emotional cue. Participants did not perceive Memojis to effectively convey emotions compared with other forms of expression, such as emojis or real human faces. This suggests room for improvement in the design and implementation of Memojis to enhance their effectiveness in accurately conveying intended emotions. Addressing the limitations of Memojis and exploring ways to optimize their emotional expressiveness necessitate further research and development in avatar design.

  • Since robots have been used widely recently, research about human-robot communication is in process actively. Typically, natural language processing or gesture generation have been applied to human-robot interaction. However, existing methods for communication among robot and human have their limits in performing only static communication, thus the method for more natural and realistic interaction is required. In this paper, an emotional gesture based dialogue management system is proposed for sophisticated human-robot communication. The proposed system performs communication by using the Bayesian networks and pattern matching, and generates emotional gestures of robots in real-time while the user communicates with the robot. Through emotional gestures robot can communicate the user more efficiently also realistically. We used behavior networks as the gesture generation method to deal with dialogue situations which change dynamically. Finally, we designed a usability test to confirm the usefulness of the proposed system by comparing with the existing dialogue system.

  • This is paper aims to figure out the way movies and engineering have communicated and the right direction for better communication between them. Engineering no longer should be treated as playing a key role when it comes to film making. Engineering is essential in making films look real. It means that movies gain credibility from utilizing engineering, which all other types of arts also seek after. Films can be resonated better through mutual communication with engineering. The paper takes a close look at emotional aspects to figure out what the new direction of communication between movies and engineering is. People's lives shown in films and the material world that engineering represents are mingled to attain the emotional oneness between the two. This can be easily observed in Japanese movies where robots and humans have a close relationship or recent films whose theme is emotional exchange among humans and robots. This kind of contact leads us to explore newly found humans' position that was brought about in the wake of development in engineering and existential conditions that humans need to have accordingly. Artificial intelligence and neurology sectors that the engineering field is today earnestly working on are in line with it. Therefore, this article seeks to find out the meaning and value of communication between movies and engineering when establishing the fresh mankind model based on emotions and pursuit of diversity.
