The paper is devoted to present the Continuum Strong Discontinuity Approach (CSDA) and to examine its capabilities for modeling cracking of concrete. After introducing the main ingredients of the CSDA, an isotropic continuum damage model, which distinguishes tension and compression states, is used to implicitly induce a projected traction separation-law that rules the cracking phenomena. Criteria for onset and propagation of material failure and specific finite elements with embedded discontinuities are also briefly sketched. Finally, some representative numerical simulations of cracking, in plain and reinforced concrete specimens, using the CSDA are presented.
The paper presents a methodology to model three-dimensional reinforced concrete members by means of embedded discontinuity elements based on the Continuum Strong Discontinuous Approach (CSDA). Mixture theory concepts are used to model reinforced concrete as a 3D composite material constituted of concrete with long fibers (rebars) bundles oriented in different directions embedded in it. The effects of the rebars are modeled by phenomenological constitutive models devised to reproduce the axial non-linear behavior, as well as the bond-slip and dowel action. The paper presents the constitutive models assumed for the components and the compatibility conditions chosen to constitute the composite. Numerical analyses of existing experimental reinforced concrete members are presented, illustrating the applicability of the proposed methodology.

In this paper, we present a 2D multi-scale coupling computation procedure for localized failure. When modeling the behavior of a structure by a multi-scale method, the macro-scale is used to describe the homogenized response of the structure, and the micro-scale to describe the details of the behavior on the smaller scale of the material where some inelastic mechanisms, like damage or plasticity, can be defined. The micro-scale mesh is defined for each multi-scale element in a way to fit entirely inside it. The two scales are coupled by imposing the constraint on the displacement field over their interface. An embedded discontinuity is implemented in the macro-scale element to capture the softening behavior happening on the micro-scale. The computation is performed using the operator split solution procedure on both scales.

This work deals with the determination of crack openings in 2D reinforced concrete structures using the Finite Element Method with a smeared rotating crack model or an embedded crack model. In the smeared crack model, the strong discontinuity associated with the crack is spread throughout the finite element. As is well known, the continuity of the displacement field assumed for these models is incompatible with the actual discontinuity. However, this type of model has been used extensively due to the relative computational simplicity it provides by treating cracks in a continuum framework, as well as the reportedly good predictions of reinforced concrete members' structural behavior. On the other hand, by enriching the displacement field within each finite element crossed by the crack path, the embedded crack model is able to describe the effects of actual discontinuities (cracks). This paper presents a comparative study of the abilities of these 2D models in predicting the mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete structures. Structural responses are compared with experimental results from the literature, including crack patterns, crack openings and rebar stresses predicted by both models.
The main aim of this paper is the identification of the model parameters for the constitutive model of concrete and concrete-like materials capable of representing full set of 3D failure mechanisms under various stress states. Identification procedure is performed taking into account multi-scale character of concrete as a structural material. In that sense, macro-scale model is used as a model on which the identification procedure is based, while multi-scale model which assume strong coupling between coarse and fine scale is used for numerical simulation of experimental results. Since concrete possess a few clearly distinguished phases in process of deformation until failure, macro-scale model contains practically all important ingredients to include both bulk dissipation and surface dissipation. On the other side, multi-scale model consisted of an assembly micro-scale elements perfectly fitted into macro-scale elements domain describes localized failure through the implementation of embedded strong discontinuity. This corresponds to surface dissipation in macro-scale model which is described by practically the same approach. Identification procedure is divided into three completely separate stages to utilize the fact that all material parameters of macro-scale model have clear physical interpretation. In this way, computational cost is significantly reduced as solving three simpler identification steps in a batch form is much more efficient than the dealing with the full-scale problem. Since complexity of identification procedure primarily depends on the choice of either experimental or numerical setup, several numerical examples capable of representing both homogeneous and heterogeneous stress state are performed to illustrate performance of the proposed methodology.

In this work we present a one-dimensional damage model capable of representing the dynamic fracture for elastodamage bar with combined hardening in fracture process zone - FPZ and softening with embedded strong discontinuities. This model is compared with another one we recently introduced (Do et al. 2015) and it shows a good agreement between two models. Namely, it is indicated that strain-softening leads to a sensitivity of results on the mesh discretization. Strain tends to localization in a single element which is the smallest possible area in the finite element simulations. The strain-softening element in the middle of the bar undergoes intense deformation. Strain increases with increasing mesh refinement. Strain in elements outside the strain-softening element gradually decreases to zero.

We present for one-dimensional model for elastoplastic bar with combined hardening in FPZ - fracture process zone and softening with embedded strong discontinuities. The simplified version of the model without FPZ is directly compared and validated against analytical solution of Bazant and Belytschko (1985). It is shown that deformation localizes in an area which is governed by the chosen element size and therefore causes mesh sensitivity and that the length of the strain-softening region tends to localize into a point, which also agrees with results obtained by stability analysis for static case. Strain increases in the softening domain with a simultaneous decrease of stress. The problem unloads elastically outside the strain-softening region. The more general case with FPZ leads to more interesting results that also account for induced strain heterogeneities.

This thesis explores the problem of reconstructing a three-dimensional(3D) scene given a set of images or image sequences of the scene. It describes efficient methods for the 3D reconstruction of static and dynamic scenes from stereo images, stereo image sequences, and images captured from multiple viewpoints. Novel methods for image-based and volumetric modelling approaches to 3D reconstruction are presented, with an emphasis on the development of efficient algorithm which produce high quality and accurate reconstructions. For image-based 3D reconstruction a novel energy minimisation scheme, Iterated Dynamic Programming, is presented for the efficient computation of strong local minima of discontinuity preserving energyy functions. Coupled with a novel morphological decomposition method and subregioning schemes for the efficient computation of a narrowband matching cost volume. the minimisation framework is applied to solve problems in stereo matching, stereo-temporal reconstruction, motion estimation, 2D image registration and 3D image registration. This thesis establishes Iterated Dynamic Programming as an efficient and effective energy minimisation scheme suitable for computer vision problems which involve finding correspondences across images. For 3D reconstruction from multiple view images with arbitrary camera placement, a novel volumetric modelling technique, Embedded Voxel Colouring, is presented that efficiently embeds all reconstructions of a 3D scene into a single output in a single scan of the volumetric space under exact visibility. An adaptive thresholding framework is also introduced for the computation of the optimal set of thresholds to obtain high quality 3D reconstructions. This thesis establishes the Embedded Voxel Colouring framework as a fast, efficient and effective method for 3D reconstruction from multiple view images.

In this paper, we propose a new Verilog-A current-voltage model for multi-level-cell PCRAMs. This model can describe the PCRAM operation not only in full SET and RESET states but also in the partial resistance states. And, 3 PCRAM operating regions of SET-RESET, Negative Differential Resistance, and strong-ON are unified into one equation in this model thereby any discontinuity that may introduce a convergence problem cannot be found in the new PCRAM model. The percentage error between the measured data and this model is as small as 7.4% on average compared to 60.1% of the previous piecewise model. The parameter extraction which is embedded in the Verilog-A code can be done automatically.
