  • To assess and understand the level of job burnout among the medical librarians and identify the factors affecting it, email survey, consisting of questions regarding personal background, organization characteristics, degree of burnout, and coping activities, was administered for two weeks in December 2016, to the librarians in 138 institutions affiliated with the Korean Medical Library Association. MBI-GS is used as a burnout measuring instrument. Data collected from 158 librarians (response rate 65.6%), were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis methods. According to MB-GS norm, respondents experience moderate level of exhaustion and professional efficacy, however the level of cynicism is extremely high. There are significant statistical differences in burnout, depending on age, medical librarian certificate, work experience, type of library, job coverage, and coping activities. There are also statistical significant correlations between workload, role conflict, decision making process and performance evaluation, organization communication, IT environment, continuing education and burnout. Based on the results, recommendations to alleviate burnout are suggested in individual, organizational, and professional association context.

  • This study aims at exploring the effectiveness of continuing education for enhancing professionalism of children's librarians and its problems in order to provide systematic and practical children's services in public libraries. To this end, we conducted a thorough review and analysis of relevant studies on children's services and children's librarian education in public libraries. Then, we carried out a survey for children's librarians in public libraries in 2007 and in-depth phone and email interviews of children's librarians who participated in a continuing education program at K library one year later. The study findings showed the need for children's librarians' continuing practical training for children's services instead of one-time training. Further, we found the lack of children's librarians' professionalism and staff members in providing effective library services for children in public libraries.

  • At present, no outside organization provides systematic support for business archives, even though there are companies that operate their own. To resolve this situation, this study suggested that overseas business archives professionals organization could apply in Korea by analyzing the form of organizations and functional roles. As such, the organization of professionals in overseas business archives was analyzed through their website, literature research, and email interviews of the staff. Based on the analysis, overseas organizations of business archives professionals were established in the form of sections and independent organizations to systematically support business archives through long-term projects. Thus, this study proposed an organizational structure of professionals organizations for the development of domestic business archives and the functional role of supporting activities, educational activities, and publishing activities. In addition, the ultimate development of business archives is clearly no longer the only solution to the change in perception and strategy of individual companies' business records. Moreover, this study is significant as a starting point for discussion on the establishment of business archives professionals or organizations.

  • Purpose: Despite its clinical benefits, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is less widely implemented for gastric cancer surgery. This nationwide survey investigated the current status of the implementation of ERAS in perioperative care for gastric cancer surgery in South Korea. Materials and Methods: This survey enrolled 89 gastric surgeons from 52 institutions in South Korea. The questionnaire consisted of 24 questions about the implementation of the ERAS protocols in the management of gastric cancer surgery. The survey was carried out using an electronic form sent via email. Results: Of the 89 gastric surgeons, 58 (65.2%) answered that they have knowledge of the concept and details of ERAS, 45 (50.6%) of whom were currently applying ERAS for their patients. Of the ERAS protocols, preoperative education (91.0%), avoidance of preoperative fasting (68.5%), maintenance of intraoperative normothermia (79.8%), thromboprophylaxis (96.5%), early active ambulation (64.4%), and early removal of urinary catheter (68.5%) were relatively well adopted in perioperative care. However, other practices, such as avoidance of preoperative bowel preparation (41.6%), provision of preoperative carbohydrate-rich drink (10.1%), avoidance of routine abdominal drainage (31.4%), epidural anesthesia (15.9%), single-dose prophylactic antibiotics (19.3%), postoperative high oxygen therapy (36.8%), early postoperative diet (14.6%), restricted intravenous fluid administration (53.9%), and application of discharge criteria (57.3%) were not very well adopted for patients. Conclusions: Perioperative management of gastric cancer surgery is largely heterogeneous among gastric surgeons in South Korea. Standard perioperative care based on scientific evidence needs to be established to improve the quality of surgical care and patient outcomes.

The contents of questionnaire included situation of employees who perform the tests, the types of vestibular function tests and equipment, frequency of the test and types of dizziness related questionnaires. Results: Forty-nine hospitals and clinics responded. All the 49 respondents answered that they have videonystagmography. Spontaneous nystagmus analysis by videonystagmogrphy was the most frequently tests for patients with dizziness. Questionnaires for dizziness were used by 27 respondents (55.1%) for initial evaluation of the dizziness patients. The Korean version of dizziness handicap inventory was the most frequently used dizziness related questionnaire. Conclusions: We analyzed the current management status of vestibular function test laboratories to comprehend the present condition of the vestibular function test. We think that these results will help to provide a standard for laboratory operations and prepare for the education, focusing on high-demand tests.

  • This study aimed at providing a comprehensive account of the sources and causes of errors in business emails that Korean college students wrote using a translation machine. Data were collected from 21 emails written by the students who took a business English course. Findings indicated that the students tended to make frequent errors in verb use and verb tense as well as a definite article, countable/noncountable nouns, time adverbs and prepositions. Therefore, the study suggested that the students' common errors imply that they experience some difficulties learning these linguistic features. Given that learners' errors can give us valuable insights into teaching and learning how to write in English, pedagogical suggestions are put forward based on the study results.

  • People increasingly rely on sources of information from E-commerce reviews. Product reviews is an important determinant of potential customers' buying choices. They are also utilized by product manufacturers to find problems of their products and to collect competitive intelligence information about their competitors. Unfortunately, it is well-known that many online product reviews are not made by genuine costumers of products. Reviewers could write some undeserving positive reviews to promote or fake negative reviews to defame some certain product, and we call them fake product reviews. Fake product review detection makes an attempt to detect fake reviews and removes them to restore the truthful ones for readers. To the best of our knowledge, there is still less published study on this problem. In this paper, we make a survey and an attempt to give a brief overview on fake product review detection. The related work of fake product review detection is presented including web spam and spam email. Then some methods to detect fake reviews are introduced and summarized. The trend of fake product review detection is concluded finally.
