The purpose of this paper was to compare and analyze the elementary curriculum and textbook integration of social studies in Korea, USA, and England in terms of content integration and to make suggestions for the improvement of Korean social studies curriculum and textbooks. For this study, social studies curriculum and textbooks of three different countries were analyzed according to the three criteria: sequence, types and focus of integration. In this comparative study, five suggestions were made for the improvement of the Korean elementary social studies curriculum and textbooks. First, Korean social studies curriculum should have a subject focus at each grade level. Second, it is recommended that Korean social studies curriculum should present clear interrelations among geography, history, and civics at each grade level. Third, Korean social studies curriculum needs to have diverse criteria on which to select and organize themes. Fourth, Korean social studies textbooks need to have increased number of interdisciplinary large units. Fifth, it is necessary that the authors of Korean social studies textbooks integrate contents in consideration of students' life context in order to raise the relevance of the contents of history and geography.
This study aims to describe the status quo of the social studies curriculum of universities of education in Korea, to extract the questions at issue, and to suggest new directions for improvement. To approach these purposes, the author grasps the viewpoints that the intensifying course of the department of social studies is investigated with relation not only to the national curriculum on elementary social studies but also to both specialization course and liberal arts course. Intensifying course have been organized to strengthen the teaching-teaming abilities on the subject matter contents since the beginning. But the present day, intensifying course meets several problems waiting solution: problems in reference to overlap with specialization course, to disconnection with liberal arts course, and to the internal disequilibrium. So, the author proposes six solutions for the problems.
This paper is to elucidate geographical implications of fieldwork activities of everyday-life space of students of an elementary teachers college. The students depended mainly on questionaries and interview for gathering data during fieldwork. They had difficulty in processing data to visual-spatial representation, i.e. map, tables, and diagrams. But they were favourable for appling their fieldwork experiences to teaching the elementary geography. This is viewed as an unique behavioral orientation or desirable attitudes of students of an elementary teachers college. On the basis of the self-assessment and peer-assessment of fieldwork activities, it could be ascertained that the students came to understand the geographical value and significance of fieldwork activities. The fieldwork activities made them to heighten their interest of everyday-life space, and so to internalize positive their senses of place, to enforce their identities of place. According to the results of this research, we need to develop a systemic contents for fieldwork activities in geography curriculum of elementary teachers colleges.
The purpose of this article is to analyze some problems of the present curriculum of social studies education and develop a newer hierarchical curriculum system for the 7th Curriculum Reformation in the primary and secondary school of Korea. Most of the major problems of social studies education come from the mixture of different subject matters without reasonable education logic. Most of teachers feel some difficulties in teaching the social studies for the lack of other subject knowledges. For the better teaching, it is needed to control the integrating level according to the learner's intellectual ability from the elementary school to high school. So, it is necessary to enhance students' thinking skills by their own ability of restructuring knowledges from all subject matters in more advanced curriculum. Also, it is required to develop a new hierarchical system of curriculum concerning the geographical view of the world. Students can have many kinds of geographical view points if teachers can well organize learning activities logically for the students to enhance their understanding of geography by adjusting scale of regional unit, geographical theme, and resolution level of interpretation. And then, in the elementary school curriculum, the students are required to understand the spatial variation of places, and various environments in the world, scale. In the junior high school, students have to understand the relationship between man and nature in the context of large scale environments. The high school curriculum needs to be focused on the student's understanding of the spatial contexts of places by theoretical application in the smaller scale region different from elementary and junior high school curriculums.

The curriculum of integrated social studies is not conceptually established, but various forms pursuing so-called perfect integrated subject have appeared from elementary school to high school. But we cannot find out desirable integration in the elementary school though the apparent goal is to integrate all kinds of social concepts into one unit. The current method of integration has some problems over advantages people initially expected by integration. It is problematic in that students learn fragmental knowledges of geography without capturing the whole geographical concept structure or obtaining their own geographical viewpoint. Therefore, we purpose to reinterpret integration of social studies and reorganize the current textbook into the right direction under the assumption that simple mixture of knowledges is far from our goal of true integration. For this purpose, we suggest a new method for social studies as an integrated subject. Instead of providing knowledges unrelated to each other into one bundle, it helps students to see the real world in his own knowledge framework equipped with geographical viewpoint. The text we claim will show students that geography consists of three key concepts: physical environment, man and environment, and spatial structure. With this text, they will have an easy access to the relationships between key concepts and details, and between geographical concepts and similar concepts from other disciplines. The proposal contributes to both upcoming textbook development and classroom teaching by eliminating problems in the current social studies teaching.

The purpose of this study is to develop learning modules for environmental education using goal-based scenarios and to examine their pedagogical benefits at the elementary educational level. To enhance environmental knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavior, this research developed learning modules relevant to three sub-dimensions of environmental education: education about environment, education in environment, and education for environment. In particular, this study provided useful educational strategies based on students' everyday lives. The developed modules consisted of three parts: 1) acquiring knowledge concerning the cause of global warming, 2) practicing and internalizing environmental knowledge in students' everyday lives, and 3) extending and disseminating environmental knowledge and awareness to other people. After applying the modules, the students acquired knowledge regarding the causes of global warming through discussions with their peers, and furthermore, exercised pro-environmental behaviors in their everyday lives. Moreover, the participants created UCC to urge other people to act for environment.

The purpose of this study is to search for a rationale of world geography curriculum. Elementary school children tend to get impressionistic and distorted information about other countries through snapshot TV programs. But they need to get more balanced understanding about them from the perspective of each country. Children's judgment about other countries, favorable or unfavorable, tends to be emotional, based on the first-order conditions of life in those regions, such as atmosphere, food, and habitat, and the symbolics of the place. But their systematic understanding about the relationship between their own life and the life of other locations or countries tends to be meager. It seems to be partly due to the practice of co-centric curricular construction. The geography curriculum may have to be in relation to other countries, from the regional geography of the third grade on.
