Purpose: To identify bullying tendencies among elementary, middle, and high school students. Method: A descriptive study was conducted with 911 participating students. Data were collected using three, self-administered questionnaires that had been modified by the investigator. The data were analyzed by the SPSS Win 10.0 program using descriptive statistics, ANOVA. Result: The level of bullying was significantly different among elementary school, middle school and high school students. Middle school students were higher than elementary and high school students. In subtypes of bullying, language type was higher than alienation and physical damage types in elementary, middle and high school students. The methods to resolve a bullying situation are for the victim to 'speak to parents' in elementary school students, but 'bear alone' in middle school and highschool students. The answer to the question 'how many of your friends have been the victim of bullying' was 3-8 friends'. The reason for being a bully victim was 'because they pretend to be a superior man'. Conclusion: Although much research has been conducted in this area, further study among elementary, middle and high school students needs to be conducted. Furthermore, a variety of programs for preventing bullying among elementary, middle and highschool students should be developed.
Purpose: To analyze the current status of health education and problems of elementary, middle, and high schools by national health education guideline. Methods: Study subjects were 991 school health teachers of elementary, middle, and high schools in one province and the data was collected by mail. The data was analyzed by $x^2$-test and Fisher's exact test. Results: The rates of school health education implementation were 99.6% in elementary school, 98.1% in middle school, and 96% in high school. The rates of school health education were reported much higher than former studies. The most barrier in providing school health education was 'health room management during health education'. During health education by school health teachers, the health rooms were managed by other teachers in elementary schools or by locking the health room with announcement memo in middle and high schools. Conclusion: To improve the school health education, higher school health teacher placement and administrative supports for health clinic were recommended.
This research aimed to observe adolescent children's use of time and to discover the parent-related factors that affect adolescent children's use of time. The subjects included 2,092 fourth-grade elementary school students and 2,108 first-grade middle school students. We used data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. We tested sociodemographic factors, parents characteristics, and time usage, and we studied these factors using SPSS version 23.0; the results are as follows. Firstly, in the subordinate scope of the child-rearing attitude of parents, affection fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 1.83) and first-grade middle school students(M = 2.02). Inconsistency had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 1.99), and first-grade middle school students(M = 2.12). Excessive expectations had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 2.40) and first-grade middle school students(M = 2.55). Over-involvement had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 2.68)and first-grade middle school students(M = 2.80). Finally, giving reasonable explanations had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 1.51)and first-grade middle school students(M = 1.68). Secondly, in fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 463.35) and first-grade middle school students(M = 378.75). Further, studying hours during weekdays had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 456.15) and first-grade middle school students(M = 460.86). Free activity hours during had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 390.54) and first-grade middle school students(M = 387.11). Sleeping hours during holidays had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 544.85) and first-grade middle school students (M = 511.74). Studying hours during holidays had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students (M = 484.86) and first-grade middle school students (M = 511.74). Free activity hours during holidays had an effect on fourth-grade elementary school students(M = 518.68) and first-grade middle school students(M = 509.73). Thirdly, by observing the relative influence of related factors on adolescent children's use of time, grade(${\beta}$ = -.284), gender(${\beta}$ = -.208), over-involvement(${\beta}$ = -.380), supervising(${\beta}$ = -.217), and (${\beta}$ = .243) in terms of the child-rearing attitudes of parents was found to affect study hours($F=2.595^{**}$). The education level of fathers(${\beta}$ = -.144) results in(${\beta}$ = 1.991) and longer free activity hours for children($F= 4.116^{***}$). This research can be used to study the influence of parents'child-rearing attitudes on adolescent children's use of time and to suggest the role of parents in adolescents' ability to manage time effectively using practical.
This study was conducted to evaluate the sanitary performance and education of elementary and middle school food service employees, by administering questionnaires to 358 elementary school food service employees and 171 middle school food service employees in Seoul. The collected data were subjected to descriptive analysis and $X^2$ tests using the SPSS package program. On the questionnaire, items pertaining to personal hygiene, ingredient control, process control, safety management, and sanitation education were used to measure sanitary performance, with a maximum possible rating of 5 per each category. The results can be summarized as follows. Elementary school food service employees' had the following sanitary performances scores: personal hygiene(4.75), ingredient control(4.82), process control(4.73), safety management(4.69) and sanitation education(4.29). Middle school food service employees' had the following performance ratings: personal hygiene(4.62), ingredient control(4.71), process control(4.71), safety management(4.61) and sanitation education(4.05). In the elementary school employees, 59.8% received regular sanitation education once per month, while 67.3% of middle school employees received regular sanitation education more than once per month. At the elementary schools, food service sanitation education was conducted verbally(39.4%), while middle school sanitation education was principally carried out through the distribution of leaflets(41.5%). The average effectiveness scores for food service verbal education were 2.97 out of a possible 5 at the elementary schools and 2.94 out of 5 at the middle schools. In both elementary and middle schools, the majority of the employees attributed the low level of sanitation knowledge in food service to a lack of facilities and equipment.
The purpose of this study was to examine nutrition management conditions of lunch with the elementary schools and middle schools in the Changwon area. 292 students (5th and 6th graders) from three elementary schools and 330 students from three middle schools (boys, girls, and co-ed) participated in the aggregate selective plate waste measurement for 5 days. Planned menus, serving sizes and plate waste amount data were collected. Nutrient analyses for the planned, served and consumed menus at school lunches were performed by using CAN-PRO 3.0. Nutrient analyses of the planned, served and consumed menus were compared with nutrient management standard (former edition) for school lunch and 1/3 Korean Dietary Reference Intakes (KDRIs). Significant difference was found in the average consumption rate between the elementary schools (82.2%) and the middle schools (71.8%). Specifically, the consumption rates of steamed rice (p < 0.001), side dish 1 (p < 0.001), and Kimchi (p < 0.01) at the middle schools were significantly lower than those of the elementary schools. When the nutrient contents in the served menus were put into percentages to the nutrient contents in the planned menus, middle schools (92.3%) showed bigger serving loss than the elementary schools (95.4%). In the nutrient assessment comparied with nutrient management standard (former edition), middle school lunches showed comparatively less energy or less some nutrient contents against the standard than the elementary school lunches. Specifically, in case of boys in middle schools, Vitamin C was the only nutrient content that satisfied the standard in the planned menus, served menus and consumed menus. In the 1/3 KDRIs based assessment, middle schoolers were found not to be provided proper nutrients with school lunches. To improve nutrition management at middle school foodservices, dietitians should reinforce nutrient assessment for menu planning, and try to decrease serving loss and plate waste.
The purpose of this research was to survey and compare the status of science preference of elementary school students with that of middle school students. Preference for science was defined theoretically. According to theoretical model, a questionnaire was developed with piloting and consisted of three parts. First part was for background information, second part, for measurement of science preference and third for measurement of the relevant factors of science preference. The questionnaire was modified for primary school students. In July 2002, the questionnaire was administered to one class per grade of randomly selected 8 elementary and 8 middle schools all over the country and analyzed result of collected 696 elementary school students and 819 middle school students. Middle school students' science preference was low compared with elementary school students, especially in 'emotional response and 'valuational comprehension'. The preference for science became lower especially from 4th to 5th grade and from 8th to 9th grade. The differences of mean science preference were significant by gender. perception of science achievement. and future career choice. The average of science preference relevant factors of middle school students also became lower than elementary students, especially in 'educational factor'. Multiple regression analysis on the science preference showed that important factors were personal ability, the personal traits, rewards in school science and contents of school science, slightly different in elementary and secondary school. The way to promote students' preference for science was suggested on the analysis result.
The objective of this study was to analyze the awareness and satisfaction regarding Korean traditional foods in elementary, middle, and high school students. In a survey of 1,030 students, 55.9% of the total respondents stated that traditional Korean food is 'Korean food that uses unique Korean recipes' (p<0.001). In terms of awareness of traditional food, most middle and high school students responded that the mass media was the biggest influence, while elementary students said that their parents were the most pervasive influence. In terms of satisfaction with traditional food served in school, 13 menus had the highest popularity among elementary school students. Most elementary school students preferred Korean traditional foods compared to middle and high school students. It is suggested that evaluation of diet quality may be a great indicator of nutritional assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diet quality of children and adolescents based on nutrient and food group intake and Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I). This survey was conducted through questionnaires and diet record survey to 477 students (elementary school students; n = 131, middle school students; n = 136, and high school students; n = 210). The results showed that high school students were significantly more often to skip breakfast compared with the other groups. The middle and high school students consumed significantly higher intakes of food and energy compared to the elementary school students. Also the number of nutrients in Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ) < 1.0 of high school students were significantly higher than that of elementary and middle school students. The Korean's dietary diversity score (KDDS) of elementary school, middle school and high school students were 4.1, 4.4 and 4.3 respectively. The average DQI-I of elementary school, middle school and high school students were 66.7, 65.5, and 63.7, respectively and there was significant difference. Also, middle school students showed to have higher score in variety and adequacy category compared with the other groups, and elementary school students appeared to have higher score in moderation category. In conclusion, high school students appeared to have unhealthy dietary habits in terms of high frequency of skipping breakfast and lower INQ and DQI-I score compared to the elementary school and middle school students. Therefore, the proper dietary management should be needed for high school students.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the image of nurse perceives by students of elementary and middle schools in Seoul, Korea. Methods: The data were collected through questionnaire survey on 860 students. The survey was performed during May to Jun. 2003. The nurse image was analyzed through the instrument conceived by Il-Sim, Yang(1998) on the basis of four dimensions; traditional, social, professional and personal. The collected data analyzed using SPSS 11.0 with frequency, mean, standard deviation and t-test. Results: The results of this study were as follows. 1. There was a significant difference in the nurse's image between elementary and middle school students(p=.000), and the elementary students had more positive image. 2. The nurse's image of elementary school students had more positive than middle school students in traditional(p=.000), social(p=.000), professional(p=.000) and personal dimension(p=.015). In elementary school students, score of nurse's image was the highest in personal dimension, followed by traditional, professional and social in order. In middle school students, score of nurse's image was the highest in personal dimension, followed by professional, traditional and social in order. 3. The difference of nurse's image not showed statistical significance in sex, religion, experience of hospitalization(self), experience of hospitalization (family), nurses in family by general characteristics. Conclusion: As a result, elementary school student had more positive nurse's image than middle school student in all the aspects. But as they grow old, it changed negative. It is required to develop public information or education fit with student's age to image making by broadcasting and to improve the image nurses themselves.
